In the official video on Turtle Wax's site, they say to wipe down the lens each time before you move to the next sanding pad. That might be why some people's lights got messed up, because you need to wipe it down each time or you could damage the lens.

Because the headlamps on my 2007 |Golf TDI had a bit more oxidisation I started of by wet sanding with 600 grit, then 1000, then 1500 and finally 2000. I ensured to rinse the headlamp with fresh water after each sanding to remove any of the residue. After using the 2000 grit I then rinsed off the headlamp and then applied some panel wipe to thoroughly clean the lense. I then applied the clarifying compound and then buffed dry. I did this around 3 times. Ensuring to thoroughly buff dry each time. After that I applied the acrylic base coat. The headlight came out really good. I was quite pleased.

Is it necessary to use the tape around the lens? Does that stuff hurt the paint on the car?
@OCPDesigns2 жыл бұрын
So it's not necessary, but the reason to do it is to avoid any of the sandpaper hitting the cars paint during the sanding process. None of those chemicals in the kit will harm the cars paint. The blue tape he used is just generic painters tape designed for houses, but will work fine in this case. It's not designed for cars, but wont do any harm. If you do use tape it would just have to be this blue painters tape or auto specific masking tape. Any other types of tape WILL damage the car. Or you could just be careful when sanding to avoid using tape at all.

@@MarkFauntleroy but what if we dont have the wipes ?
@MarkFauntleroy3 жыл бұрын
@@Unknown-uy6mj I think the wipes are some type of sealer to use after you sand and clean the plastic lens. There are other ways of accomplishing all of this, which, I believe, involve a sanding pad on a drill or orbital sander and then wiping on or spraying on a sealer. I’m gonna sage everyone the discouragement of trying all the rebuffing of any headlight. Go to your local Walmart and they will literally spend 4-5 hours with pneumatic sandpaper wheels tape up the whole front of the car with clear plastic protection and take all the oxidation off the lenses and recoat it with professional clear all for $25 a set!! The headlights come out as good if not better than original. They lose money but the manager was telling me they hope people will do an oil change and go shopping if they wait. It’s amazing I’ve done it on three different cars. Believe I’m picky and I tried to tip them $40 but they refuse. Their amazing!!

It made the lens worse! Step one (Clarifying compound) , cleared it fairly well but not completely, so I proceeded to step 2 using the pads and lubricant. It completely clouded up the lens (almost like a weird chemical reaction) and now is cloudier than before I started. I followed the directions EXACTLY and did not overuse the pads (a min as instructed) when using the lubricant and kept it very wet the whole time. The cloudiness will NOT come off despite going back to step one and using the clarifying compound. Worse than when I started and my call to the # on the box is going unanswered! I may need a whole new headlight. Now one is clear and the other ruined!
