that's lancer sharpening spear, which allows a spear to deal more damage for certain times(while it is sparkling) and to last longer before it gets stuck in creatures.

the trick is to do a backflip, then press down and throw at the same time

It's in the vanilla game, you have to hold down while backflipping and throw at the same time.

You can do them on command with some practice, definitely try it a bit. Backfipping is a very useful move to learn! What I would suggest doing is going into a flat arena like nest and practicing turning from a run and jumping simultaneously.

Having only recently started playing this game and playing through survivor I followed the overseer's directions and having to go through the overhand and up the way you came down cost me many a dead slug cat and many tears. Is it easier to get to pebbles the backwards way? Is there even any point to visiting moon or is it just that the games story essentially drove me those ways?
