Mr. Stewart, my dad was a top turret gunner, on a B-24 Liberator. 15AAF 783 Group 465 Squad. Pantanella air base. He flew 37 missions. He is my main war hero. But all you all are. He and I went to the first Tuskgee airman movie, which he said he liked, He told me that the red tail fighters were some of the best at supporting the bombers. He told me that if it was not for you guys I may not have been born. He is gone now, but I still tell people the stories he told me. I would always ask him to tell me about what he did during the war. If these folks didn't think you all had it rough they should look up Ploesti, to see what the bombers went through. 60% losses on more than one occasion.

Tuskegee Airmen are legendary and true heroes! They definitely were in exponentially more danger getting shot down and captured in the European Theater. Can’t imagine the ones who got captured and how they were treated with the lunatics who were in power I Germany at the time.

@@rustyshaklford9557 As a Canadian I have come to understand that anything an American says is pure BS. But these airmen were good pilots and while the ground was littered with them and German pilots, the American bombers always came back in the same numbers as they went out. This was well known around the airbase and why bomber crews always asked for Tuskegee escort. Now I understand what you are saying, anything an American claims to be gospel and swears on a bible to the truth of it, well in rest of the world it makes a good story and why Americans are well liked story tellers.
@rustyshaklford95572 жыл бұрын
@@thomasstuart6861 They lost bombers to flak and to enemy interceptors. They were good pilots, but not great by the standards of their peers. They were criticized for being too timid and sticking with the bomber formations all the time, and not peeling off fighters to pursue enemy interceptors. They were given a mythical status to serve as integrationist propaganda, but their service record was thoroughly mediocre.
@thomasstuart68612 жыл бұрын
@@rustyshaklford9557 Its a good story regardless. I was told the reason they were better was because they did not peel off to pursue enemy interceptors like other escorts.

@@thomasstuart6861 The P in P-51 stands for pursuit, it was the doctrine of fighter escort. Their lack of aggression probably explains why they had so few kills.

One problem with this. on 24 March 1945 the 15th. Army Air Corp shot down 8 German jets over Berlin. 3 were shot down by the Tuskegee Airmen and 5 by the 31st. fighter group. The Tuskegee Airmen never won TOP GUN. First winner was in 1969. The competion the Tuskegee Airmen took part of was in 1949. The Tuskegee Airmen won the propellar competition while the 4th.fighter group won the jet compitition.There were only 3 P-51 mustangs propellar planes entered. 2 of the propellar planes did not practice as much as the Tuskegee Airmen. A second compitition was cancelled in 1950 because of the Korean war. Top Gun was started in 1969 because the F-4 fighter was not doing well in Viet Namn so Top Gun was organized. Tuskegee Airmen had nothing to do with Top Gun. They did competed in a contest in 1949.

In 1950, Harry Stewart Jr. received an honorable discharge from active duty. The United States Navy Fighter Weapons School 'TOP GUN' was established on 3 March 1969. I love what the Tuskegee airmen accomplished but no way did this great man win the first Top Gun competition.
@Trenchfoot12 жыл бұрын
Well, there's no doubt that the fighter gunnery competition took place or that the Tuskegee airmen won it. I think there's also a difference between the name of a school and a name of a competition and it seems a little ungenerous to dispute.
