In this video, I'm covering some of the main aspects of "tussentaal", also known as "Verkavelingsvlaams" or informal spoken Flemish/Belgian Dutch. I cover six important lexical and grammatical characteristics with some examples straight out of our Easy Dutch videos.
Check out the original videos we filmed for Easy Dutch - can you spot more characteristics?

Finally, some Belgian Dutch coursebooks… I don’t mean to discriminate Netherlandic Dutch or promote Belgian Dutch, but I’m just explicitly mentioning some course books and material here because I know how difficult it can be for students to find good study material in Belgian Dutch. The standard is however that most coursebooks and online material too are in Netherlandic Dutch.

Bedankt voor deze nuttige en interessante video!! Ik ben een Italiaanse student Nederlands en woon in Antwerpen al twee jaar. Voordat ik hiernaartoe kwam was ik gewend aan het Nederlands van Nederland en was verbaasd dat de taal hier zoooo anders is. Nu heb ik een duidelijker idee waar het verschil ligt, merci!

Although I way prefer the softer pronunciation of Flemish 'ch' and 'g', I've had incredible difficulty in recognizing the spoken words by some of the Flemish speakers in the subtitles, even setting the video to a much slower pace. The pronunciation of some words by these speakers still sounded unintelligible to my ears even at a very low speed, unlike your pronunciation, which always sounds with amazing clarity in the normal pace. I take it you have very good diction but not the majority of speakers of Tussentaal:-) Dank ü for one more amazing video, Nout, you're a fantastic teacher!

The most important is actually to understand tussentalen...Otherwise people switch immediately to English or French and you never get to practice the language...

In the Netherlands ge/gij would never be used with the proper verb like hebt, zegt or zijt, but always with dialectic hedde, zedde or bende. "Zijt gij.." sounds either medieval or Flemish. We (in Brabant) use "Bende gij..".

Tuurlijk! Maar ze zullen misschien wel een beetje om je lachen omdat je een beetje stijfjes klink als je een Standaardnederlands woord gebruikt in plaats van een gebruikelijker Belgisch-Nederlands woord :p Of course you will! You may get made a little bit fun of for sounding too stiff when you use a typical standard dutch word instead of the more comon belgian dutch word :p
