What is tussentaal?

If you've been studying (Flemish) Dutch for a while you might have across the term "tussentaal." What does that mean and how can you recognize whether someone is speaking "tussentaal"?

Finally, some Belgian Dutch coursebooks… I don’t mean to discriminate Netherlandic Dutch or promote Belgian Dutch, but I’m just explicitly mentioning some course books and material here because I know how difficult it can be for students to find good study material in Belgian Dutch. The standard is however that most coursebooks and online material too are in Netherlandic Dutch.

I've studied Dutch for a year and a half, through Dutch and Flemish media, with a teacher from Brussels (not a native speaker but still a very experienced teacher who spoke excellent Dutch). I had my last exam a few weeks ago and Igot a really high grade. I talked about striking rights, unions, healthcare, politics... without any issue. But I also live with two Flemish students and I can't even understand when one of them ask me simple things like "Are you going to use the kitchen for a long time?" lol This video was really useful, as well are all of your videos! I remember taking my first baby steps in Dutch with your videos aimed at beginners... 🥺🥺 Thanks for the book recommendation, I'll probably buy it in the near future!

I've become reasonably fluent in Dutch and had an equal number of teachers from Flanders and The Netherlands. I can understand both AN and Tussentaal easily though I speak AN and I never had to choose between Belgian Dutch or Dutch Dutch. It's a single language with a wide variety of approaches and I enjoy that aspect. If I'd tried to choose only one variant I would have missed a great deal of the richness of the Dutch language and much of its beauty too.

We leren vanuit 'Niet Vanzelfsprekend' op mijn school! I got lucky, denk ik. It is a very Dutch school (voor de jongere studenten), maar het programma 'Nederlands voor Volwassenen' volgt Vanzelfsprekend/Niet Vanzelf...en mijn leraren kwamen originally uit Vlaanderen- Hasselt en Torhout! Toen ik in Brugge was, vond ik het zeker moeilijk om de gesproken taal te verstaan; dus, ik ben opgewonden om te leren over 'Wa zegt ge?'- ik zal hem kopen!!

Thank you so much, great to learn about the history. My dad was brought up mostly in Oostende. His dad, my granddad and family spoke Antwerpen dialect, I think, but dad learned/spoke the West Flanders lingo also.

I know. Well, I do make "Spreektaal" videos in which I speak Dutch. For the grammatical & instructional videos, I prefer to speak English just so that everyone understands me. I wouldn't mind speaking in Dutch to explain grammar too but then I'd have to subtitle that and that's just time that I don't have right now.

Hey Nout! Thanks for the clear video. I was wondering if you could make an additional one explaining when exactly to use words like 'nen', 'den', 'dieje' and so on. I didn't find any content that explains cleary how to use them. And when I ask Flemish people they don't know because it's just natural to them. Anyway, keep up with the good work!

@@SaturatedCat Thank you for you detailed explanation! I live and work in Flanders and I am definitely looking to reach near-native fluency in Flemish and this particular point is clearer to me now. However I have heard several times 'nen auto' and I checked and the word 'auto' is masculine. I guess we use 'nen' here because 'auto' starts with a vowel. Klopt dat? I also found the 'bdht-klinkerregel' and it seems to overlap with your rule. Are these the same?

thanks a lot for the video! I have to admit that I was quite surprised when many many year ago I watched I think it was a soap from Flanders, and I practically didn't understand anything, even though I was able to understand at least 70% of spoken "hollands" back then. I think knowing how the tussentaal differs from standard dutch would help a lot to understand it better. btw, is "gij/ge" accepted in written standard belgian dutch? considering how common it is there? but also considering the fact that "gij/ge" was actually part of standard dutch, at least an older version of it. you just need to read a bible from just a few decade ago and you'll find gij zijt, koomt, moogt, etc.

"gij/ge" is not accepted in written standard Dutch, that's why it's in the category of "tussentaal", which isn't standaardtaal. What you say is true, it used to be part of written Dutch (if you look at old Middle Age texts and literature) but not anymore, that changed with the standardization of Dutch.

It is accepted in written language. The flemish government just generally recommend you use it in written language, because it indicates a high level of informality. You will however find it in written form in certain novels (often when they are set in Flanders and the author wants to give them a more natural way of speaking), the bible and on social media.

Yes, in a way, but it's really typically Flemish in that it has its own grammatical and lexical specificities. Or that is to say, normally when Flemish use colloquial Dutch, it's "tussentaal", in the Netherlands, it would just be colloquial Dutch, but that wouldn't be classified as "tussentaal". Makes sense?

Ik heb echt heel vaak het gevoel dat ik niet "Nederlands" kan leren maar dat ik tussen Nederlands-Nederlands en Vlaams moet kiezen....en dan is er ook tussentaal die sowieso anders in elke regio is...waarom moet het Nederlands zonder eenheid zijn zeg maar?

Goeie vraag. Dat heeft alles te maken met de geschiedenis van Nederland en België, misschien maak ik daar op een dag ook eens een video over. Ik denk niet dat je per sé tussen de twee varianten moet kiezen, maar het ding is wel dat je de verschillen meer en meer zal merken naarmate je Nederlands beter wordt.

Pardon ?? Nederlanders zouden geen tussentaal hebben?? Tuurlijk hebben we dat! Alle talen hebben een tussentaal en 't is ook niet vreemd of slecht. Als Nederlander verbaas ik me altijd over die (krampachtige) discussie in Vlaanderen. Alsof 't uniek is, vaak ook alsof 't iets smerigs is... In grote dele van Nederland zijn de dialecten en regionale talen aan uit verdwijnen en in plaats daarvan, net als in Vlaanderen en elders, wordt 't vervangen door een tussentaal. Een Groninger spreekt nog steeds heel anders dan een Brabander, een Amsterdammer heel anders dan iemand uit Maastricht. En niet enkel qua accent, uitspraak of een enkel woordje. Nee, t is een mix tussen de dialecten en de standaardtaal. Ik spreek bijvoorbeeld absoluut geen Amsterdams maar veel mensen in m'n schoonfamilie wel. Hoe wij communiceren? Tussentaal! Dat wil zeggen dat zij onder elkaar Amsterdams spreken maar omdat ze weten dat ik t niet spreek, passen ze zich aan. Ik doe 'tzelfde en pas mijn standaardtaal aan. Typisch Amsterdamse tussentaal ? Uiteraard qua uitspraak: Z = s V = f -en = - uh Klinkers zijn lang en vaak tweeklank Qua grammatica : Zij (mv) = hun Hij = ie Hun = hen = ze (alles door elkaar) OVT & VTT = hetzelfde Zal = zou (uitspraak & grammaticaal) Hij/zij heeft = hai/sai hep Wisselend gebruik tussen: sig (zich) mekaar (elkaar) & seneiguh (z'n eigen). Het Amsterdams heeft geen reflexief & de standaard geen "eigen". Dus in de tussentaal worden alle vormen gebruikt. Qua woorden : Geinig Waffel Wijffie & goser :) (uiteraard de ziektes als adjectief 😉) Etc, etc, etc

Dit is ons in Vlaanderen allemaal bekend. Maar de evolutie naar een algemenere omgangstaal door het verdwijnen van dialecten in Nederland, heeft weinig te maken met de positie van de Tussentaal in Vlaanderen. Die laatste ligt nog veel dichter tegen dialect.

Als Vlaming irriteer ik me ook telks als de discussie rond 'tussentaal' weer opkomt. Het feit dat er zelf een discussie is, is allemaal nog een gevolg van dat Nederlands vroeger als een minderwaardige taal werd gezien in België, een taal die enkel uit dialecten gesproken door boeren bestond. Om te bewijzen dat het Nederlands een gelijkwaardige taal was moest er een 'heilige' standaardtaal gecreëerd worden. Nu zijn er nog altijd een paar die vinden dat elke afwijking van die standaardtaal een fout en een mislukking is waarvoor de spreker zich moest schamen. Dit natuurlijk onnozel. Elke taal heeft formele en informele varianten. Belgisch Nederlands is daar geen uitzondering in. Zelfs de term 'tussentaal' begint steeds meer op niks te slaan in een tijd waarin de dialecten van vorige eeuwen aan het verdwijnen zijn. Naar mijn mening is het beter en logischer om over informele en plaatselijke varianten in heel het Nederlandse taalgebied te spreken.

Thank you for the video and also for the links. Although I'm way more interested in the Dutch spoken in Flanders (I like to call it Flemish), I don´t like that amount of French loan words, I must confess, it´s too distance from its Germanic roots. When the borrowings are from languages of the same branch at least they don´t sound too unnatural to the language which borrowed them, but I know this is just my personal preference. I hope someday the author makes the book available on Kindle edition at Amazon.com cause then it'll be more practical in many ways (also, many times, the digital editions are cheaper).

1. We leerden op school (jaren 5 en 60) "gij zijt" en "ik drink nooit "t", gij altijd, en hij alleen als hij "tegenwoordig" is. Waarom omschrijf je "gij" als tussentaal. Pas veel later werd het "jij". Wat was er verkeerd aan ABN? Waarom moet dat nu AN worden genoemd en omschreven? Wat was er verkeerd aan programma's zoals "Hier spreekt men Nederlands"? Deze lessen als een mislukking ten voordele van de tussentaal afdoen is niet correct. NIR, BRT, BRTN, VRT hebben altijd het A(B)N gepromoot. Mijn ouders werkten daar. Het programma waarbij Vlaanderens geschiedenis werd uitgelegd (in tussentaal godbetert!) was een schande. 2. Je bent overigens de uitspraak van de "r" door Nederlanders niet beschreven. Die "keelziekte" is bovendien niet in heel Nederland te horen. Net zoals de "vertweeklanking" van de o, au, ei enz. Ik weet ook wel dat taal leeft... edoch!
