You can also connect your xbox to your computer with a standard Ethernet cable these days as long as your pc's network card supports Auto-MDIX.

Yup. Essentially if your network card supports gigabit ethernet (which almost all have since 2017 or so) you're good to go with a regular ethernet cable. Makes things a lot easier.

Thanks so much! I found my old soft modded Xbox in the loft and it's still AMAZING! I couldn’t remember how to do this so came here. My uni friends and I played this a lot. Halo Lan parties, SNES emulators. Was amazing. It was a console way, way ahead of its time with the soft mod.

*Word of caution for those wanting to do this:* Once connected to your router, your Xbox’s IP address may not be assigned until you reboot it. That’s how it went for me.

Fantastic. I had static on 192.168.1.1 on my old isp, but my new isp has allocated to another subnet so I couldn't connect. Your dhcp thing saved me. Great video!

I have all these steps down up until the point you're clicking quick connect ( for the crossover method ) and yet it's failing to connect to the xbox. I have the correct IP the correct username and password and port. What could be the issue? I have two different crossover cables i've been switching between with 0 success. Any help would be appreciated.

this is old, but the reason is you probably werent in your xbox's SOFTMOD MENU. thats where you need to be for some softmod installers, as it uses a generic fake IP for the main softmod dashboard, and can only initiate FTP in the softmod configuration menu, where it will give you the REAL IP.

I have to use a usb wifi adapter for pc internet access and our router isn't near a monitor to plug up the ethernet to Xbox and get the ip address, so the crossover method waa only viable option. so excited it worked as I didn't even realize my ethernet cable was a crossover.

Mine said the same thing. I fixed it by going back to the xbox, selected system, miscellaneous, then start FTP and everything came together for me. I hope you have the same luck.

I just used an ethernet and then in network settings right click wifi connection, properties, sharing and tick both boxes. It probably isnt as efficient as using a cross over cable but it works XD

I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!!! Both the ethernet cables from the xbox and computer need to be plugged into the same router. IF you have the computer in the modem and the xbox in the router it will not work!!

I've done this several times but it's never consistent. It's either hit or miss with this method. I've tried rebooting my Xbox and exiting out of Filezilla to restart it but it sometimes work and sometimes don't. I don't know if anyone else has this issue. Has to be a better way. It never consistently work. I get disconnections and error messages and then it may work for a game or two.

Do NOT use a crossover cable if the device you're connecting the XBOX to is a modern device with a gigabit NIC (and many newer non-gigabit capable devices that support auto-MDIX). Gigabit NIC's will automatically adjust the transmission protocol as they sense the connection scheme they're using.

intel network cards auto sense when you are trying to connect TWO PCs & it electrically switchs a CAT to x-over a x-over cable is basically a dummy cable that sets things up a little bit easier & tells windows off the wip what your trying to do (connect two systems) or dazy chain them without router/switch

Sometimes FTP can be very temperamental, I have had issues now and again with certain games. It seems to be games that have many files and sub folders that cause the issue.

Awesome video, but I DID NOT NEED a CROSSOVER CABLE! Just used a regular patch cable, a crossover is not needed as long as one end of the connection is capable of using a patch cable in place of a crossover. Good news to me, because I didn't think it would work because I had trouble with it on my 60gb PS3 after trying it.

Check if your E partition is lacking space. That is the default partition the Xbox uses to save games. Unless you mean saving your game on emulator?

You could probably rewire it yourself to an old usb cable if you have one lying about and dont mind ruining a xbox controller. I'm sure there will be a guide somewhere :). If not check for adapters on ebay

@@ArrayJ Alright, thanks for the quick answer! I've already converted a old controller which was missing a few buttons but it overall seemed to work. And I've seen some adapters as well but with shipping to Sweden the prices are not worth it. I just wanted to make sure that there was no other way of doing things without wasting a controller since I actually play on the old xbox sometimes. I suppose I could just use a emulator on my pc anyways. Thanks for the help. Although the video wasn't something I really needed I'm sure it's well made and helped others :)

Say can you connect you x-box directly to your Mackbook or Laptop with an Ethernet cable instead of the Router if this method is munch shorter for you .

When I try the Ethernet/router method my ip on my Xbox home screen comes up as 0.0.0.0, I haven’t had any luck yet with connecting 😫

Set the xbox to DHCP instead of Static and restart. The xbox is telling you it cant connect to the router to get an IP. I set mine to have both the IP static and port forwarded in my router settings as well.

Have you tried a hard wire connection with a crossover cable? I would try that, and it if it's still slow, it's likely that your HDD write speed is the choke point in the transfer rate.

My Xbox didnt offer DHCP as an option, but I've read that when you set Static to "No", or disable it, that happens to be DHCP. Also mine had some DNS addresses set up, I had to delete them all and make them blank so that it could work.

Does yours have a setting somewhere else to choose if you want your DNS to be static or to obtain it automatically or something like this? If not, can you set the DNS to be anything else, does it than stay, or does it also change back to what it changes into when you delete them? I would also try changing it into blank values using spaces instead of numbers instead of deleting and leaving all truly blank.
