How To Easily 3D Model A 3D Printable Hinge That Prints In Place With No Supports
A step-by-step tutorial on how to 3D model your own small box with a print-in-place hinge in Autodesk Fusion 360. I tried to make it as beginner-friendly as possible, so hopefully, anyone can follow along regardless of experience level! By the end of this video, you will be able to model your own print-in-place box with a hinge, and hopefully have the tool you need to create your very own designs.
Timeline:
0:00-1:34 Intro/Basic Fusion 360 Navigation
1:35-2:15 Summary of What We're Doing
2:16-8:00 Sketching/Creating The Box & Lid
8:01-16:03 The Halfway Rule: Finding The Pivot Point (Axis of Rotation)
16:04-23:25 Creating The Hinge
23:26-26:20 Splitting The Hinge Up
26:21-36:05 Connecting The Hinge To The Box & Lid

43:01-44:30 Exporting The STL
44:31- End Printing The Box/Review
Following this tutorial, you will learn 1) How to use sketches & extrude to create shapes 2) How to use the shell command to create boxes 3) How to use the Halfway Rule to design a hinge 4) How to design a box with a print-in-place, no supports hinge, and 5) How to export your STL's for 3D printing!

This was a great tutorial for a beginner like me. I liked that you did not edit out the mistakes and walked us through all the decisions. Thank you !

Really good stuff! What I like is that you make mistakes. Many mistakes. And you correct them. Or make changes. You keep talking and explaining as you go. The trouble with many videos is they run through steps so smoothly and then when you try to do it just one error and you're lost with no clue as to even how you got lost. I swear it is usually the people who just learned the program are the best teachers, not the experts who know everything. Those people can't get to a level to teach the new people because they are bewildered as to why everybody can't follow what they are saying. And many of these people don't teach the program. They say "I show you how to make a thing". And they do, brilliantly. But you don't learn much. Just the narrow part about how to make this thing. And they also talk a mile a minute. I have to rewind frequently to get what they blurb over.. I guess I've been wanting to unleash this rant for awhile. So to conclude, I hope you post some more with the same teaching style. It works for me. I bet it works for others. Thanks.

1 tip I would to give for tutorial style videos: start with showing the intended end result (either printed product, a sketch or just the finished Fusion360 model). That way our brain can better understand how each step relates to the bigger picture.

Maybe I should have pointed it out, but the first 8 seconds of the video/the thumbnail are showing a rendered image of the end result. Thanks for the comment, and for checking out the video!

How does the printer handle the rod inside the hinge? The way you've printed it seems like it was in the air, inside the middle section, yet it works.

Hi Im new to this. If I wanted to model a non in place hinge how would I do this. I want to make a finger and its be easier to not print in place
@sampaetzold8449
@sampaetzold8449 5 ай бұрын
There is a bunch of ways, but the easiest way would to be to make the finger and have two little holes on the inside of it and make the rrest of the finger sepereatly and make it where the poles of the outside of the second finger would poke out but smaller then the holes on the first finger and you can just put it in to it with a bit of pushing.

I will be a contrary voice here. I found the failure to edit out mistakes very frustrating.. trying to help my kid follow along for school homework and watching them repeatedly pause and struggle to work through the steps only to have you stop and say “ooooohhhh that’s not right oh I am so stupid”. They did have a swear word count going which they enjoyed. Like. I get mistakes happen but the thing where you undid the entire surface making the lid hinge shape was cringey af. Sure leave a couple of oopses in where you struggled to get the right command in the menu but a huge goof like that? Cut that out and say “I screwed that whole thing up the first time through.. let’s do it right” or something

Thank you for making the video. Despite my complaining … It is really helpful to have a resource available for students so that they can have an example to follow without necessarily having someone else do it for them.

Sorry, but at the halfway point I had to stop. Freewheeling obviously has advantages for you but I really think your tutorials need a bit of planning. I'm sure you know how to design things but all the flipping back and forth makes it really difficult to understand what you're trying to achieve.

Thanks for the feedback, and sorry you couldn’t find any value in this video. My other tutorials have been more planned out, but this one was by the request of many and I wanted to get it up quickly for them. Still learning, always trying to improve how I can present the information.

I disagree, as a brand new to F360 person it’s really nice to see some of the back tracking and workarounds that you had to do. It’s super frustrating when the software doesn’t act just like it does in the tutorial because it makes you feel like a failure. When in actuality lots of people have the same issues and have to work around it too. Perhaps an extreme beginner series and an intermediate series.

@@yota4x405 I really appreciate that! I honestly sat there and struggled over the decision to pre-plan, edit, and make it perfect, or to film it in a more natural way with minor editing so people so see what the process is REALLY like for me. For this one I chose the latter, but overall I’m still learning how to teach this stuff so any feedback is greatly appreciated! For a lot of my designs, I do exactly what you see in the video, then I go back and re-model with parameters for a cleaner workflow for later editing. I just tried to make mini teaching lessons out of my mistakes in this video, but I do have plans to release A LOT more videos with smaller chunks of information broken down in a more organized way

@@ThinAir-3D please don’t completely eliminate the mistakes. They’re very helpful as I said before. Someone you can watch to learn their teaching style that I like a lot is Lars Christenson he works/worked for Autodesk and did live streams that keep the mistakes and he basically has an item and goes through the process of making that item. I’m not suggesting you copy that style, but use it to help cater to the brand newbies like myself. It’s a missed Niche in my opinion

@@yota4x405 very much appreciate the recommendation, I’ll have to check his videos out! I’m sure I can learn a lot from him in general! I really like tutorials by Grant Abbitt (I’ve learned most of what I know in Blender from him) and have always appreciated his teaching style, so I somewhat have been attempting to teach in a similar way to him!

Painful watching this video. Keep waiting for "it" to make sense! I don't need to watch someone screwing up when learning something new! This could have been a good video if you took some time to figure it out in advance.
