If we've been using a Mineral Oil/wax combo (for sealing wood cutting boards) on our soapstone and that last application was a number of weeks ago, can we apply this product? Or must we use acetone or other remover to get off any of the old mineral oil residue before we use your product?

Acetone would remove the wax, we recommend using a solvent or mild dish soap to flush the mineral oil out of the stone. That would need to be done before applying the Soapstone Sealer.

we're planning on installing a soapstone island for baking, rolling out dough etc. Is this foodsafe/viable for such a use or should we stick with oiling it.

It’s much safer than oil. After the first application, you can leave the wax on overnight and wipe off any residue in the morning (I wipe down the entire counter). I bake a lot and have never had an issue, although I clean the counter with alcohol first

Yes! Our Soapstone Sealer is food safe and would work very well for baking and rolling out dough. Typically oiling is done with mineral oil and that never dries, so it is consistently being transferred into your dough from the countertop. Our Soapstone Sealer fully cures and is a much more permanent and longlasting sealant. Hope that helps!

How many layers should we put? You showed one layer in this video.

We recommend only 1-2 coats. Once the surface has an even sheen, thats all you need! Reapply as necessary across the whole surface or in affected areas.

Will this work if I tried to sand off scratches with sand paper ? I have small circular areas that are more dull then the rest of my soapstone

It would definitely work in the way the Soapstone Sealer is meant to nourish and protect, but there still may be some discoloration from the sanding. We would recommend testing a small amount to see how the results will look.

How often to seal new stone?

Reapply as necessary. Typically you will see the sheen of the surface become dull or flat. Spot treat in those areas when that happens.

Curing without any use, for a week or more, is currently unrealistic as these counters are in use for family most days. How strictly does one need to adhere to this step?

You can still use your countertops, although we do recommend laying down something like wax paper while in use and removing afterward. Keeping things on the counter will prevent airflow, which is what causes the curing process to happen.

@davej7303 - leaving it for one week is only necessary the first time you wax the counters. I wax my counters every year or so (don’t have a family) and usually leave it on overnight. The next day, use a cloth to buff remove any residue. If you apply it correctly, there won’t be much to wipe off

In this video you say, "you definitely don't want to leave too much on and leave it on overnight." What should you do if you accidentally did that??

Hey Mark! So if the Soapstone Sealer is looking thick and white in some areas, you should be able to buff it out to get back to being clear. However, if there's enough on there that it's not drying and it's becoming gummy then we would recommend using our Citrus Solvent to remove some of the product (if not all of it), so you can re-apply it. Can wax be used on my granite floor?

Yes and no. You can use the Soapstone Sealer on a granite floor so long as the granite is unsealed. If the granite already has some kind of finish on it, then we would recommend our Clear Carnauba Wax.

You can’t seal soapstone. You’re just putting wax on the surface.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Soapstone can't absorb but it can adsorb. This is what our Soapstone Sealer is doing.
