When you get to the "no command" screen I was unable to get past it by pressing both buttons simultaneously. Instead I pressed the power button first, kept it held, and then pressed volume up, all done in quick succession. I've done it twice now and that is the method that worked for me.

I'm so sorry to hear that. The problem with this system is that even after a factory reset you still need to either know the pin or the Gmail password that was used on the phone. So you would need to try and access the Google account first. If you're trying to use the phone then, you might need to get a second phone, activate the phone number there, then try and do a password reset via SMS... And there would be a few more steps after that, and they all assume so many things. It's going to be complicated either way to be honest.

You should have the option to enter the email it was registered with. If you do not know that, then this method cannot break into the phone.
