Tutorial: How to get Ladder Only Runewords in Single Player Diablo 2

Ladder only runewords, by default, are not able to be used in Single Player in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.

Here is a tutorial on how to make this happen without using PlugY.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I advise to close out of any Diablo II client completely before doing this.
1) Download this file: drive.google.com/file/d/1beQ_...
2.) Place the Rune.txt file in your Diablo II Folder under "Diablo II\data\global\excel" Please note, these folders may need to be created!
EDIT: 11/5/2016 - *If you are still having issues with this, sometimes removing the .txt from Runes.txt fixes it because it hides known file types. It would look like Runes.txt.txt with file types shown
3.) Right click on your Diablo 2 shortcut → properties → Add "-direct -txt" in the target line after "...\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe"
4.) Test runewords!

This is being tested on a Windows 7 64bit computer, it should also work fine on Windows 10 as well. Latest patch 1.14D.

***MAC RESPONSE**
Copied from previous response of John Hammer: It will work on a Mac but you will need to use the Terminal to launch the game rather than double-clicking in the Finder or clicking on the alias in the Dock. Find the Diablo II application icon in the Finder (it should be inside a folder called Diablo II). It is not actually an application but a "package". Right-click on the Diablo II application package and choose SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS. You will then see a folder called CONTENTS, click on that and you will see nested folders one of which is called MacOS; click on MacOS. In there you will see the actual Diablo II executable application. Now open a Terminal window. Drag the Diablo II executable application to the Terminal prompt. Doing so will put in the correct path to the application so you don't have to try to type it yourself. You can then add any arguments after that, such as -direct -txt or perhaps -act5 (which starts new single-player characters at Level 33) or ALMOST anything else that works on Windows. Remember that you also need that text file placed in the proper location in order to get this Ladder-Only Runewords fix to work. You can use an Automator Script if you want to launch the game this way frequently (pretty much the same as a Windows shortcut) but it's better to do it only when you want to create ladder-only runewords.

Awesome, works perfectly. Since I'm a bit scared of messing with game files because I sometimes play online, I can confirm that if you do the thing said in this video, then enter SP and make your runewords, you can then undo everything (deleting/whatever) to these files/folders you created and remove the -direct -txt part from your launcher and you still get those runewords to work. In that case, if you go in MP you don't have a single different file from the original thing, but you still can use Ladder Runewords in SP! :D

My experience getting this to work was contrary to the below post telling you to follow the registry string. It was actually my program files x86 folder that was the hold up - and it was the runes.txt.txt issue. Rename the file to remove the extra extension (newer versions of windows typically hide the extensions and automatically assign them.)

Posted 8-17-19 Nice! I'm three+ years late to the party, but Alara Shade gets my vote! Unlike some big name streamers, that cannot be bothered too (or do a really poor job) explain things, the two videos I have so far watched of Alara's present the information in clear form, without being rushed. I now realize that I can have the ladder only Runewords in my single player games. This very well done video showed me how easy it is to install this stuff, and now I can start to enjoy all those heretofore unobtainable formulas. A big shout out for Alara Shade! The other video I watched and enjoyed was the GoMule one. I should probably mention that I am an old guy, and play D2 in my own home network games. I currently have 5 working computers up and running on my home network, and so do all of my mule activities within the framework of TCP/IP games. Once I get the three other D2 machines back up and running, I'll once again be able to play 8 player games on my home network. So I'm not as sold on using a third party program for my Muling needs, but the functionality and install process was well and clearly explained. Again, thanks to Alara Shade for these well made and very informative videos.

yup it worked.. to those not working try going to startup and find folder options then uncheck "hide extensions for known type" then check your rune.txt.. mine shows rune.txt.txt and just erase .txt so it will be rune.txt.. this is how it worked for me

To those having difficulty finding the correct destination folder to copy the "Rune.txt" file, here is what worked for me. If you have moved the diablo II folder or installed it from an usb key, your installation path might be wrong. The correct place to create the "\data\global\excel" folders, on Windows, is in the folder refered by the key : "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II" To find this key you have to look in the regestery : hit the windows button -­> type "run" -> hit enter -> start the run application -> type "regedit" -> hit "OK" In the Registery Editor : expand the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" folder -­> expand "SOFTWARE" -> "Blizzard Entertainment" -> "Diablo II" Find the "*Save Path*" key. This is the location where you need to create the folders "\data\global\excel" Copying the Runes.txt file there worked for me. I recommend you backup your character file before trying to create a runework in case you messed up.

I found the Save Path - its was C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\Save\ what to do next? i tried to create the folders "\data\global\excel" all i did was create folders in the save folder and named it "data" - then opened that one and created a new one "global" and so on and draged the Rune.txt in the "excel" folder. only in the last folder "excel". Hi There Speedy, I have a digital version and my first try didn't work. I have created a folder structure in here: C:\Users\your_profile_name\Saved Games\Diablo II - I read someone said that you need to do that with the digital version. So it looked like: C:\Users\your_profile_name\Saved Games\Diablo II\data\global\excel\Runes.txt After that I have created the folder structure exactly where I've installed the game not where the saves are kept and it worked like a charm: D:\Games\Diablo II\data\global\excel\Runes.txt Now excel folder is filled with other *.bin files like you can see on the video. Other than that double check what was mentioned in the comments already. Hope that helps, cheers.

Ahh so you most likely had the issue where you don't display file extensions and you ended up with Runes.txt.txt file. Removing the additional .txt from the name gave you the correct file with extension. I'm using GoMule for more space.

The keys drop in single player but can't really be used. (unless I'm mistaken) PlugY makes them usable though.

Hey Alara Shade, a couple of us do no have the save location, I cannot find the excel/global file. Our diablo 2 is not saved in the 86 programs file like everyone else. Can you let us know how to locate or a work around for this?

I've tried everything and I can't seem to get it to work at all. I created the folders, put the runes.txt file in the last excel one taken off the hidden extensions, made a new and second sort cut twice and have the -direct -txt in the properties. is there anything else that I might be missing?

Ah yes the events. If you do want the events PlugY allows for this but I do not use or have a tutorial on this at all. The other thing about PlugY is that you have to downgrade to version 1.13. It has Uber Tristram (apparently nerfed) and Diablo Clone.

Yeah I used to play Plugy, but i dislike the stats and skill changes enabled that it allows... even not using I dont like it.. haha. For now 1.14d is fine without it, i just hunt items and play with Evolve lan with some friends... I hope someday blizz set a D2 server in Brazil... is it dream too much?

Hello Alara, thanks for the tutorial. As someone who plays around with hero editor this was a big help. The 2 main item packs for hero editor is horrible lacking of items, so haft to make your own; In my case I wanted a dream runeword in a tower shield base. Will give a shout out if I remember!

***** I unfortunately haven't found a Lo Rune. This is why I advise to use a cheaper runeword like Edge. TIR TAL AMN. if you are unable to make a lower runeword then you might of done something wrong. Also make sure that the armor isn't blue if done correctly.

Hi I dont know why but firstly runewords not work right when i made them but after few days the stats apear. Now they are work but there is a problem with variabile stats range . For exemple i reroled a prudence Eth sacred armor for about 10 times and the ed was between 140-150 when the runeword has a chance to get 140 to 170 ed . Same with doom eth ca.maybe i must try more.

Copy your save files and if it doesn't work or some other problem occurs, you can restore your characters/saved games to the exact state they were in before you tried this "mod".

Make sure that the rune file isn't "rune.txt.txt" sometimes hidden file extensions are off and there is an extra '.txt' which makes it not work. Double check your folders. Still not working? Make a back up of all your characters, uninstall and start from square one.

Do I have to remove it to play on battle net? I don`t want to get a ban if their software picks some changes in Diablo folder up.
