Most Izotope plugins are like a great set of training wheels. They are really helpful to the novice engineer. There are some things that every engineer can make great use of for sure. But I think we can get the most out of these if we learn to integrate these concepts into our own workflow and routine. If someone puts in the time to truly takes full advantage of these great plugins, then they will soon outgrow them. I just wanted to share that perspective because in other comments sections I have sensed that some people assume they no longer need to put in the work to hone their craft because Izotope can just do everything for them from now until the end of time.. For some people that might be what brings them joy, More power to them.. But for those of us determined to take our mix game to the next level and beyond, we know the hard work will never suddenly end because of 1 or several plugins. Even with plugins as amazing as the ones made by Izotope. I’m not saying this i response to anything that anyone here has said. I was just thinking about this earlier and felt like sharing after reading this..

@@jeffTcorbin81 I agree. It's really comprehensive but production is as much an art as it is a craft and both, more or less, need that human element to really stand out.

WOW this Plugins are the first in the market to un-teach you how to mix ! really amazing technology but it basically mix the whole song by itself and if i were a beginner i will never learned that way ... don't get me wrong you are making great software plugins but all the AI in my opinion is making the next generation of mixing engineers much worst ! even in this nice presentation with great narration and explanation you hear real volume changes when fx is bypassed ... and you really got impressed by loudness especially with the reverb example ... now some times the point is to make stuff louder but even then i am always comparing the levels of before and after , and only then i will give it the amount of boost needed :) anyway thanks for the video and plugins i hope i wrong about the future of mixing engineers

lol we tried to teach ourselves but we only end up guessing most of the time. I'm happy there is a way to finally automate everything!
@VEsound
@VEsound 4 жыл бұрын
Un-teach is hard: iZotope AI presets based on the material we give can be just a mixing (here) start, with us questioning if all modules added by the AI are really relevant, and if they are there's also the precise parameter values on all these modules to question again. That can be a way to teach, just differently. But what you say about levels is true. Especially around 11:35 when there is an unfair A/B with levels so different... Frustrating and borderline because there is the Match button on Nectar 3 so it was easy to propose us a fair comparison. So iZotope, please don't do that anymore because THIS kind of A/B is exactly the idea of un-teaching Avi is talking about here. And few people will understand how your A/B was unfair at the end of the video because human ears love volume and without the Match button activated it's far more difficult for us to really hear what Nectar 3 is really doing on the video. Beyond understanding regarding all efforts done by iZotope to teach mixing and mastering notions all the time, for example on their blog. How can they destroy this remarkable job with dangerous A/Bs like this one? And it's not the only iZotope's video doing this kind of wrong A/Bs... :(
@chike1866
@chike1866 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the AI doing the job, but then that's what you pay for. Again, a keen learner will try and understand what the AI is doing and why, that's why videos like this are important. I'm sure when sound packs became a thing, music players had issues with producers not knowing how to play musical instruments. There will always be a place for the original creatives.

Is it possible to add the presets in conjunction with the changes made by vocal assistant or do you have to start from scratch?
@Domiviio
@Domiviio 5 жыл бұрын
Emma Harrop why would you like to use it as a preset? Every session and every new song needs a different process so I would not use presets in mixing. The whole vocal assistant is basically a big preset that listens what should be added or take away, so you would not need to save it as preset.
@SweetappleWes
@SweetappleWes Жыл бұрын
@@Domiviio i think he was asking if you can add presets that are in nectar 3 along with the the vocal assistant copy, which you cant @emmaHarrop, I usually will do the assistant, than if i want to add a preset as well thats in nectar, just open another nectar and add the preset, i usually end up dialing that preset back a bit so it doesnt over produced

I would probably back off some on the masking EQ effect, as the volumes of those masking instruments are fluctuating to the point of drawing attention to themselves in a distracting way...so that's maybe even worse than the audio masking they had been doing before the effect was used.

Just thinking about this..I don't see why he didn't adjust the vocal levels of original vs processed tracks more evenly for apples for apples comparison after each module adjustment, the treated track seemed too loud and uneven. As far as the un mask feature demo.. going back to reduce the high levels of the offending instrument tracks I suspect would be the better solution (?).. but neat that un-mask is able to make some noticeable improvement.

The problem with over correcting things is it robs the life and shelf life of the track. It's the anomalies and mistakes that make things interesting for the long haul. Pop music today has a short shelf life because it's too perfect and the listener doesn't stay engaged very long.

What's so bad about breaths? Humans breathe. It shows that we're alive. I think there's too much "cleaning up" going on in music production nowadays. People get obesessive-compulsive and perfectionistic about "fixing" every tiny little thing and all these "corrections" add up to a totally over-produced, artificial-sounding product in the end. I also remember reading about a study that was done where they played the participants a Beyoncé vocal track two times, once with all the breaths removed and once with the breaths included. The result was that people rated the performance with the breaths as much more emotionally captivating. So with all this over-editing, producers are literally sucking the emotion and humanity out of the music.
