Holy shit. You actually broke down the process and gave a clear pattern to use. Most tutorials give vague advice like "pick lighter colors" or "don't ever use black, get creative." This helps so much. It inspires me to color alot more!!!

Excellent explanation. Simplifies color theory in a way that it can be easily understood by anyone. Most other KZbin tutorials simply say "choose a lighter/brighter/darker color" without addressing how to maintain harmony with your base/local color.

5:34 Another thing with the never pick black thing (pick something more purple or etc) in my opinion is, when the color sceme is more warm pick warmer colors for black and when its more cold pick colder colors for black.if this makes any sense

Yup. Pick purple is decent general advice but it will vary depending on the ambient and environment lighting conditions.

NOTE: I know this is an older video but i could see this going wrong easily. When you are using green, go to Blue instead of purple. I noticed he didn't choose green and therefore didn't run into the issue you will have by going counter-clockwise to reach purple. Use purple as a guide until yellow, then go clockwise. You will get a muddy hue if you try to use yellow as a shading color for green.

Hello there! I've been watching your videos for quite a while and came across this tutorial again. But recently, I've been having trouble with shading white clothing. Like hoodies/shirts. It's not that I have trouble with shading in general (I've watched your shading clothes tutorial) I just have trouble picking shading colors for white. I hope you can make an updated version of this video including shading colors for white. I've searched around KZbin and the internet for a decent, "How to pick shading colors for white" tutorial but couldn't really find one. Again, I've been subscribed to you for quite a while and I think your art is AWESOME! Keep it up, king!

could it be that adjusting the color "towards pruple" seems to work best, because it suguests the influence of ambient light across the spectrum? i don't know tbh, but is seems plausible to me, since pruple isn't "real" but the result of blue and red receptors fireing equally ambient light is allmost allways a mixture of reflective lightsources across the spectrum.
@Van-Leo3 жыл бұрын
id like to add! his reasoning for picking the colors he did was that they were all on different parts on the color wheel/square. while that works in theory, the problem is the Value of color. how light or dark it is. so you can have a very saturated yellow and a very saturated red, and they will still be on opposite sides of the value spectrum. yellow is lighter than red even if they are fully vibrant. if you go to windows settings and enable color filters you can set up a hot key to view your screen in monochrome, so black - white. you can see his hair value and his ribbon value are very close in value, almost the same grey. they look good in color but neither pop. that is not a bad thing, you may want a character to be all one value for one reason or another. being able to see value helps you in finding out what parts of the picture will pop though, regardless of color. a fun challenge you can do is to turn on the monochrome filter and paint something without knowing what color you're picking, and pick often. once you've made everything look good value wise you can take the filter off and see that it still looks great with all the random colors because everything is the right value!
@simplified42 Жыл бұрын
The reason why you should move for the shading towards purple is because all hues still have a value. Colors like red and blue are darker than green and yellow. So if you move towards purple is because you'll get a darker color with the full chroma. Also about color warmth, color coolness is relative. If you put a cold color in a warm surrounding it appears more cooler. But you can still use the left side of the ring as warm and the right side as cool. Don't worry too much about it in the beginning.

your english is actually really good! there's a few errors, but the main thing i noticed is that spaces come after commas. your comment would end up looking like this, after i made a few more adjustments: "So, for the lighting I can just pick a color near the yellow, go diagonal to the left, making it less saturated and more bright?"
