So glad you're from the UK. You might be the only AI artist on YT that's not from the US! Can you do another canvas tutorial showing the use of blow dryers/heat guns so that we can see if the inks behave the same way as they would on YUPO? And also using metallics, and whatever technique one would use on YUPO basically. Thank you!

Very encouraging to see your post here. I have a local paint store here in Memphis called Ferrel Calhoun who makes a competitor to Kiltz II. I bought a pint on a whim a couple years ago just to see if I could make a canvas act like Yupo. Never got around to experimenting and so with your KZbin here I'm encouraged to do so now. Part of the fun of Alcohol inks is to find ones own methods and canvas can be a more an economical option now because of your instructions here. Thanks for you help. I also see where Grafix has a new "Opaque White Plastic Craft Plastic" too.

I'm so pleased it's encouraged you to go and try it out. I suppose any kind of water/stain blocker should work really. I don't see why it would only be Kilz 2. I love that you can use alcohol inks on canvas. It's such a beautiful medium and I love seeing it on a bigger scale. I hope you have fun experimenting 😁

Just keep in mind that alcohol dissolves the bin primer. Even when completely dry. When you apply alcohol ink with a brush or start dipping with a cotton the ink will mix/blend with the dissolved primer.

Only if used in a larger amount and deliberately agitated across the primer with the intent of removing it, surely? Also, I don't know anyone who applies AI with a brush! This minuscule amount of alcohol ink just skirting lightly over the surface of the dried primer won't do anything. If it did, countless artists around the world would've seen their work rapidly deteriorate, as BIN and other similar primers are used by many AI artists.

Soooo... the BIN primer we have in the USA lol it’s VERY common actually lmao! We have it in multiple kinds like water based 123, shellac, and oil based lol BIN primer is manufactured by rust-Oleum! And before that, it was created by William Zinsser who is from Germany and came to the USA back in the 1800s and showed Americans what shellac based priming was all about 🙆🏽‍♀️🙂 haha! I work for rustOleum which is the only reason why I know the background 😂😂 great video btw!! Xoxo

Not sure I have access to this in Europe :(( wondering if I could just epoxy the canvas making it smooth and then alcohol ink on top? 🙏🏼
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how the inks will look on top of epoxy, I haven't tried it. You could try it on a really small section of epoxy but then you would need to seal it again after with epoxy. Most water repelling paints should roughly work with this technique, it doesn't need to be this particular brand.
@ilspeth99
@ilspeth99 2 жыл бұрын
Zinsser is an American company. You can get B-I-N at any hardware store in the US. My question is this: since alcohol is a shellac solvent, wouldn't using alcohol inks break down the primer?
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 2 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I don't know the chemistry side of things but I and a lot of other alcohol ink artists have been using this primer with alcohol inks and it seems to work well and the primer holds up. Maybe it's the double coating that helps It to work ☺️

Hi Mary, I'm afraid gesso isn't really going to work because it's not waterproof. I'm not sure about the decoupage medium. You could try it but it would have to be quite thick. I think the main thing is that you want the canvas to resist the inks soaking a lot.

Inks can vary in time to dry depending on what surface you do them on but if you are using alcohol inks then they shouldn't take too long to dry because the alcohol will evaporate very quickly. @EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest using 90% or above. You can use 70% however you might not get all the lovely effects that the higher percentage of alcohol will give. This is because the lower percentage will have a mixture of water and oil in it which can affect the overall "look"and blends of the inks.

Using BIN does prepare the canvas well but each time I get settlement marks (don’t know how else to describe them) like thin rivers after it dries all over the surface. Happens on large and small canvas. Does this happen to yours and how to prevent? Thanks
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 2 жыл бұрын
A few ideas to help you with this - sand down the canvas before you start. It could be that the texture on the canvas is causing this to happen. Another idea is to use a foam roller instead of a brush to create an even texture. You could also paint a layer of standard white primer underneath before you use the BIN primer to help with taking away some texture. Lastly, make sure you mix the primer really really well - like maybe 5 minutes as it could be that it is not mixed properly and is separating on the canvas. I hope that helps ☺️👍🏻

You can use a pre-primed canvas but you would still need to prime again with this primer/similar because a normal primer won't have made your canvas waterproof. Hope that helps

Hallo…, i have a question. Can we use acrylic paint to prime our canvas..?
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave Жыл бұрын
Not if you want to use alcohol inks as you need a primer that repels water. You can use acrylic paint to prime a canvas where you're not using alcohol inks :)

@@EmmaRave so how about oil paint as primer for alcohol ink? I am trying yo use what i already have at home 😅
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave Жыл бұрын
@@Tukanggambarklaten Would it take ages to dry though? It basically needs to stop water soaking through the canvas. Have you got any old bathroom/kitchen paint. Usually they are water repellant. Or any paint that is shellac based.

Thank you for the great tip. I have a question for you. I am new learning about alcohol inks. I just learned about the white because I’ve never seen it in the craft stores I go to. Is white just an ink or is it a mixative?
@EmmaRave
@EmmaRave 5 жыл бұрын
It's not a mixative like the Tim Holtz one, which is why I prefer it - the colour comes out a lot stronger and moe prominent.

Hi Emma, thank you for a great tutorial. I have recently purchased an air gun so I could try and do some alcohol ink work but I only have wooden canvases at the moment. Can this be used to prime wood too? X
@Daddy_Potaytoe
@Daddy_Potaytoe 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you’d basically need to create a plastic surface for alcohol inks. I’d be curious if any ole spray paint would work to. Not a primer spray paint but just a good one like krylon. You just need something that stops the wood from absorbing the ink. Same with canvas.

Yes as Rizzo said, its fine to prime the wood with this primer too. You just need to make the surface waterproof basically. Good luck with your project!

Yes it should do although I haven't tried it. Only thing is, it may slide off the canvas a lot so you would have to keep it really level whilst it dries.

Lots of people also use a coat or 2 of krylon UV to protect from fading, because apparently the inks are quite susceptible to fading without it.
