Wow, using the drill chuck seems so obvious now, but never occurred to me until seeing your video. Very cool, thanks! 🤙 Should have demonstrated a screw that's all the way down/flush into the deck board. I had 2 out of 5 like that last week. Tried the rubber band in the stripped screw head trick I saw in another video, no dice. Ended up drilling down with a slightly larger bit to destroy the screw head, then pry the deck board up, sliding over the vertical length of the now headless screw(s). It worked, but ain't pretty. 10 minute job turned into 45 minutes of "screwing" around. The simplest frickin' things wind up being a PITA.....🤬

Awesome trick with the drill chuck, never thought of that one. I have the same speed-outs and they work about half the time. Better than not at all I guess. Now do a vid on removing super-corroded screws where the head breaks off and you have to pry the board off and knock the leftover piece out with a hammer and pin punch! Fun!

Yes! I have many super-corroded screws to remove. And many times I'm working on a bad board with good boards on both sides so that I can't get a pry bar under the bad board.I
@AK99581 Жыл бұрын
@@mike_98058 Yeah I've learned one trick since that may help you. All of the big box stores sell what are called plug cutter bits, you can actually cut a hole around the messed up screw and pull the board off, then you have room to use vise grips or the drill chuck trick...or, as I ended up doing to some of them, just cutting them flush with a multitool so I could lay the new board on flat. If you plan on saving the board though, this trick will not work as it will totally destroy the board you are taking off.

Thank you! I see by your demonstration that I was a bit aggressive recently with the Speedout. I actually destroyed the digout(?) bit and was not successful in the least. As opposed to saving you $100, my inability to successfully use the extractor (screw was metal to metal, and was likely rusted) cost me $80. I still have the mailbox I couldn't remove the screw from, so I think I'll practice. :)

Thank you for paying it forward. My issue is with very old rotted deck boards. Most of the screw head broke off. Would speedout work? They are tiny in the joists. Any recommendations would be appreciated
@kenb61443 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem I find with older decks are the screw themselves are no longer straight. Over time they become bent and there is no twisting them out. Also, corrosion has weakened the screw so that it snaps with low torque. If you want to preserve the joists, cut the deck board around screw and then try to twist it out with vise grips. It's very time consuming.

damn, the drill chuck less method worked. may mess up my drill, but it was f***g satisfying!

Small tip to anyone with a very stubborn screw: Use pliers to turn the reverse bits if your power drill isn't able to extract it. I tried hand screwing it out with the reverse bit, no dice. The pliers firmly grabbing on the reverse bit, the screw came out instantly. (I was swapping the door direction on my drier, was starting to think the manufacturer soldered the screws in or something.)

This may be obvious, but using the vise grips coming down directly from top (not just from the side) has allowed me to get to some screws with very little exposure of the head. Additionally, a small tap (or two) on the vise grip handles before locking the vise grip can sometimes get enough head contact to capture the head for removal.

Could use your help. It's my first time installing composite decking. Using the face screw and plug for the picture frame. While driving the screws a few spun in the hole before reaching the proper depth. Didn't strip the head so the screw still spins. Unfortunately it doesn't back out it just spins. For the couple that's not deep enough I suppose I can just trim the plug? Don't know what to do with the ones that are just at the surface. Was thinking about using a punch and try to drive them deeper but looking for options before I do more damage. Thanks!

Spent weeks trying to remove screws attached to stainless steel. I tried EZ Outs, screw extractors, rubber bands, super glue, drill bits, gloves, and the only thing that worked was using a rotary tool with cutter (Harbor Freight $10) to cut a line/slit(Phillips flathead) in the center of the screw so an Impact Driver can hold onto the screw. My screw was too short and the material was very soft. Put painters tape on the screw before using an Impact Driver(Amazon $12). This was the only thing that worked for me. Hope this helps someone out there.
@blueandbanana3 жыл бұрын
serendipidus1 if the screw is so soft try a left handed screw or super glue a screwdriver to the screw. Try the other methods. Impact driver- you hold it firmly and use a hammer. If the screw is soft tap lightly.
@blueandbanana3 жыл бұрын
serendipidus1 impact drivers uses the force of the hammer to help turn a screw. Just hold the impact driver firmly and see what direction it is turning before hitting the impact driver with a hammer.

Wow! I'm surprised at how many people never thought of the drill chuck method. Admittedly neither have I, but probably because I don't yet have a battery drill so anything involving the drill usually also involves the extension cord(s), and so I don't even think about it. Usually if you can get a big beefy drill chuck on it, I'm already using the vise grips and have it halfway out. My problem though is when the screw breaks about a half inch below the head, before the wood, so there's no head to grab onto, no exposed shank, AND I have to reuse the hole, so there's no option to just move the mounted item or drill the hole out bigger. Can extractor sets work on shank-only extractions?

Unfortunately, non of the proposed ways in your video is possible to use. Do you have idea how to get it out? It is really nice piece of oak and surface need to be planed. All the nails/screws are out except of this one. thx
