I notice a lot of comments where people say they have difficulty getting a fairly close shave even when using a quality safety razor and quality blades. One thing I think a lot of people tend to neglect is the pre-shave preparation of your face. If you perform a really good pre-shave preparation, you'll likely notice a much smoother/closer shave. Without a good pre-shave preparation, the shaving process will be a lot rougher regardless of what razor and blades you use.

Alright, so I got the DE89bl and I finally manned up and took your recommendations for technique and... OH BOY! I have always hated shaving. Torture has really been the standard for shaving in the past, as I have sensitive skin and I always get ingrown hairs, knicks, terrible razor burn, discomfort. I have ended up having to shave once a week and with a dull triple bladed razor. Anything else and I end up hacking my face off. With the DE89, Proroso menthol soap, badger hair brush, a little bowl, and the preparation that you recommended in other videos - this was not only the most enjoyable shave I have ever had, but also the closest. I almost want to run back in there and shave again, lol. I look forward to shaving tomorrow and seeing if I can shave two days in a row. I will highly recommend your videos and your retail site. Thanks so much for everything!

@@presleyrodrigues Well the DE89 bit the dust only after a few years. The threads eventually stripped, and I wasn't overtightening so I don't know why a quality razor like that would fail. Some of the chrome had even "rubbed off" from the head, which was disappointing. I had a Merker razor that had a shorter barrel and I had never really used it, but it became my primary razor and I am still using that to this day. I've adjusted my process just a little bit, using Proraso sensitive skin, and Old Spice aftershave. I only use Gillette blades from Amazon, which come from either the Middle East or Russia (judging by the print on these boxes). These cost me about $0.05 a blade, and I use a new one every time I shave.

@@ryanmichaelhaley and has the irritation really gone away? Have you managed to shave daily since then? I've recently ordered my first safety razor online and I'm really excited for this. How has your experience been?
@ryanmichaelhaley

@@vitoramorim4884 Honestly my hair doesn't grown in that fast. I shaved Friday and now it's Monday and I'm finally rocking the 3 o'clock shadow (I'm 44 years old). I shave once a week, and the experience is much better for me. I could shave every day, but I have to use the hot towel before and after I shave, and take a hot shower prior to shaving washing my face really well, then using a shave oil or balm in addition to my Proraso sensitive skin soap. It's not worth the time, to be honest, so I just shave once a week.

I met an old guy in his eighties that had a smooth, clean-shaven face. There was no hint of stubble anywhere, and no evidence of an impending shadow. He told me that for his entire life, he has shaved with a safety razor using only olive oil. Shaving soap has been around since at least 1840, but he said that shaving with olive oil was always popular, because it reduces cuts and razor burn due to better glide, and gives a better shave than soap or creams. Any shaving oil also works just as well.

Just add a few drops of the jojojba oil or avocado oil in the bowl with soap or cream when you create lather. 5-8 drops will be enough. You can use olive oil or some other as well. Works for me.

I spent most of my adult life trying different cartridges, shaving creams, and soaps. I tried different combinations with no good results. In my line of work I am required to shave everyday, and I dreaded shaving everyday. I would always have irritation and bumps, and as the work week progressed, it got worse. I could only get two to maybe three uses out of a five blade cartridge, which are so expensive. After watching your videos I Finally broke down and bought the Edwin Jagger DE89 and WOW!!!!!!! Been using it for a week and the irritation and bumps are gone!!! I get a clean and close shave every time and actually enjoy shaving now. I have now completely switched to the traditional soaps and creams and badger brushes. Even started using a Parker SR1 Shavette. I went ahead and even invested in a good strop and stone, and found an old George Wostenholm Straight Razor that my friend had in his collection that was in amazing condition. After experiencing the old traditional way of shaving, I am really shocked why we as men ever got away from it. Thanks Geo, your videos are awesome, and they have given me a good starting foundation.

This is the video that started it all for me. I must salute Geo for teaching me how to shave with a DE Razor. At the time of this video I was a misguided teen who used to shave with multiple razor and I had terrible acne because of the ingrown hairs caused by them. A dermatologist recommended me to shave with lesser blades and voila I got introduced to single blade classic razors. This lead me to ask my mum to buy an Edwin Jagger DE 89 from England where she was visiting at the time. My love for DE razors has never diminished and still square up with the same razor as I keep a beard now. Thank you so much once @geofatboy for teaching me how to shave the proper way 🎉

Nice video which convinced me to buy a EJ DE89bl. I first bought a cheapo wilkinson sword plastic thing inlaid with metal in the handle, the WS blades that came with it were great, shaved close on a 3 pass with no irritation. Put Derby blades in this same razor, nasty razor burn, nicks, horrible redness, put the exact same blade in the EJ89... the difference is night and day. Smoothest shave ever, hardly any irritation and no nicks. I am sure it'll only get better when my technique improves.

This is a great razor, use it every second or third day. I have tried every blade in it you can imagine and I find the Gillette 7'oclock give me about 5 really good shaves before I have to replace blade. My next picks for blades for this razor would be Astra and Then Feather. I gave about 3 good shaves with an Astra blade and about 2 with a Feather.

Interesting. Wilkinson Sword for me; really not fussed about Feather. My DE89 came with a free sample of Feathers, and as I had no idea what I was doing and was concerned I might snap the blade - if you've only shaved with a cartridge, you don't know that DE blades are supposed to bend! - I didn't tighten the head completely. Ripped my face to bits! Beginners idiocy aside though, I've returned to Feather occasionally and still found them unpleasantly aggressive to start, quickly dulling to an uncomfortable snagging mess. There's a sweet spot in between, but for me it doesn't last a whole shave. Personna seem pretty nice, as do Gillette Platinum, but so far I've yet to find anything as comfortable as Wilkinson Sword.

I came across this video and thought I’d experiment with a safety razor. Living in the UK, I bought my Edwin Jagger (same as the one you use in the video) for £13.75 here in England. I already use Proraso shaving cream, with the pre shave. I have had the best home shave of my life with this razor!! Never used one before, but no nicks, cuts or razor burn. I have a BSS!!! Thank you so much for this video and I urge everyone to buy a decent safety razor and bin off the cartridge razors. The shaving experience is leagues better; it is a far cheaper way to shave and significantly better for the environment. Top job, sir!!!!

I've been focusing on my technique and trying different blades over the past month. I've found Feathers are the absolute best for me and bargain blade Astra SP is my usual go to. I can shave in all 3 directions now with little to no irritation. I've definitely taken your advice and shave LIGHTLY and let the blade do the work. I just glide the razor over my face.

This is, by far, my favorite safety razor simply because it works very well and has never really cut me. I would advise rinsing the soap off your shaving hand so it doesn't get slippery, but this really is a great razor.

I've recently returned to DE shaving since my teen years and use the German version of this fine safety razor, the Muhle R89 Grande. I'm still trying to refine my shave and find DE shaving a real pleasure now and your clips helpful. You are a slick shaver and I hope to become as good. Here's a BTU from me.

I just got the DE89L, which is the same head but with a lined handle, I lathered up with a mix of their sandalwood soap and cream and used a derby blade for my first DE shave ever. it was by far the best and most enjoyable shave I have ever had! I did 3 passes WTG, XTG, and ATG. It was super close, had no irritation, and I only nicked myself twice, around the chin and lip. All I can say is I'm sold on DE Shaving!

I was at my local sample sale and noticed a nice chrome Edwin Jagger safety razor for only $12.50! I bought it and did some research and found it to be a DE89! I feel so lucky with this find.

Had my first DE shave with this DE89 and a feather blade (was waiting for my start pack of blades to come through but couldn't wait). Loved my first DE shave, it wasn't perfect, some spots I feel like I could have gotten closer but the parts I did do right was so smooth. I Loved the sound of the blade cutting the hair and the feel of Handle.

This is the razor I wan't. After watching your video's and your immediate response to how wonderful this razor was got my attention. some razors you feature you don't give much response to how well it performs rather then the technique involved... which isn't bad too. As being fed up with electric and wasting money with cartridges this will be my first DE razor. Thanks for the awesome video's and stay sharp!

I just bought the Edwin Jagger DE89 for my very first safety razor and I am glad I did. Great fit for my first safety razor but I had some nicks on my neck and near my upper lip. I guess practice makes perfect. Great videos, thanks for inspiring me to get a safety razor!!

and have never tried a EJ razor, you have seriously been cheated. This is the FIRST razor (ex straights) that I can go ATG on my mustache without ANY drag or tugging, leaving terrible irriation. I got an accidental bbs shave. lol Now to Shavenation, they were great to deal with, right up there with the best imo, and Ive dealt with 90% of them. Dont hesitate to buy one of these, its my new favorite by a mile! Thanks Geo for the video, it truly changed my shaves for the better!

I bought an EJ89L w Feather Blades. It's an experience I think has to be done over and over to appreciate. First time hacked the hell out of my face and went all stypic pencil crazy, second time lather wasn't wet enough and hacked again, third time with a good water/Proraso blend, my face is as smooth as my fingertips. The lack of a lubricating strip means that it will get closer than any kind of Fusion but if you insult the razors quality by pressing too hard it will bite you.

Geo is THE man, the foremost expert on his type of shaving. What works best for me is 1) get your wash cloth as hot as possible and get it into your beard 2) put your shave cream on 3) I shave against the grain first - I am aware that this goes against convention. If you have much more than a days growth I like a DE or a razor which won't clog up. The Schick slim twin is fine for the first pass, gentler than a DE. The next and last pass I use a 3,4, or 5 blade razor. Re apply cream for the second pass. I am only saying this is what works for me. I like the first razors because they don't get clogged up. Using a DE repeatedly has given me some real razor burn. A 3,4, or 5 blade razor will get you free of any whiskers and because of the first pass the whiskers will not be long. The 2nd razor will get you smooth as silk, you should feel no stuble. Lastly, apply a good aftershave.

When I first got this razor it felt a little different from my Merkur HD, seemed more mild. The head is just designed a little differently. This razor rocks! I use it more than my HD now. I love it.

Very helpful video! The first shave was a little rough and I had some nicks, the second was better, and the third was really smooth and no nicks! I've been thinking about going to a double edge for a while and I can't explain why I procrastinated so long. The DE89 seems to be a good razor as well. You've explained everything very well in the video, all was clear.

Totally agree with geofatboy - a DB is better for your skin. But if you have a lot of acne, you may want to consider a Panasonic ES-LV61-A if you can afford it. I use it wet with Spencer & Devon unscented shaving cream. Afterwards I use uspa toner and moisturizer. No cuts and absolutely no irritation.

Great videos. Just upgraded from the Fusion to the Hydro 5 and now the DE Safety Razor. Got the Edwin Jagger with 5 Derby blades for £15. The first time I cut myself a few times, wrong technique over the years. Kept at it and have now got it OK. I look forward to shaving rather than considering it a chore. I have learned a lot from you, Thank you. After a few years, will try the single edge razor. One step at a time as I only have 1 face. Keep up the good work, much appreciated. Andrew

I got this razor 4 years ago along with a van der hagen soap and cheap brush. Cut myself pretty good the first time I used it, but had that same set up the other day and it was one of the most pleasant shaves I've ever had. It's not the most aggressive, that's for sure, but damn if it ever isn't sturdy and gets the job done. :) Really, really nice chrome finish too.

UPDATE: still a an awesome razor. Bought a sampler pack of blades and so far the sharks have been the best. I also started applying secret shave oil prior to lather and I have had no irritation what so ever. Great razor!! It is a little more time consuming with the old style of shaving, but I feel like I just left the barber everything. It has also really helped my complexion. Now I know some guys are still using the foam in a can, but I have to tell you, you don't know what your missing if you have not used the sandalwood cream yet. It just takes less then a dime size of cream to make lather for three passes. Smells great, a lot more lubricating, and it is going to last you for ever!

I bought the DE86 (the one with the black handle). I think it has the same head as the DE 89. I strongly recommend it! It is so much better compared to my plastic Wilkinson DE. Compared to Mach 3 both are awesome... no pulling whatsoever.
