In this tutorial I used the ISO-TECH IDS 6072A-U oscilloscope and a bench power supply to demonstrate how you can use the single shot feature with triggering to capture a signal event / glitch / transient. I also the demonstrate the use of the cursor feature to measure a signal.

I am a retired programmer and have been playing around and learning robotics using the raspberry pi and Arduino like micro computers (as can be seen on my KZbin channel “LotBot Robotics”. I have been using servos and software that produces Pulse Width Modulation without really understanding pwm. So I thought I would get an oscilloscope to see if I can really learn what pwm is and how it really affects a servo. I have spent a lot of time looking at videos on the oscilloscope and was still very confused when I happened to see your videos. I just had to thank you for creating videos that give a novice a good understanding of an oscilloscope and it looks like other equipment that I plan to review in the future. Again thank you very much for spending the time an effort to create great educational material.

I am a novice at the oscope and was having a lot of trouble trying to capture a single event and this video was perfect. After capturing it a few times, I noticed that I wasn't capturing what happened AFTER the sudden rise of voltage during an event (a cap charging) so I used triggering on the "down slope" in addition to the single event mode and bang, I got the whole thing. Thanks for making the difficult concepts of using the oscope and particularly triggering easier to understand. As you said, it is an iterative process of looking at what you are getting to set the horiz and vert scales properly.

I found this video very educational! Even though my Siglent SDS1102CML oscilloscope isn't exactly set up the same exact way I was still able to find the settings. And most importantly understand what each setting was for. It really helps to have the oscilloscope in front of you at the same time watching these videos. I learned what the triggering is for and how it's used. Thank you very much!! :-)

Another great tutorial video. I bought my scope in connection with a project involving an LVDT and measurements at the micron level. So the quality of the voltage inputs to the LVDT and the S/N ratio of its output will be one of the first things I will use the scope to assess, along with measuring the effects of signal conditioner alternatives. Also, I have a momentary button that produces bounce, and I will be using it to assess the timing on that so that I can implement anti-bounce code for the microcontroller to insure it is eliminated. And the information you've provided in this video should enable me to accomplish those objectives. I can't wait to see the next on in your series now ! Thanks again !!

Thanks Martin, I don't really use long time base sweeps, mostly a few ms or so, recently though I had to use a time base of 5s per div. I couldn't think why my scope couldn't single sweep. Your information answered this. As my display is 18 squares across the trigger sweep took a lot of time to produce. Altering the trigger point to the second vertical Graticule and a trigger level of around 800mv, gave me the signal I was looking for. I've used scopes for years but never had to address this situation. My Scope is a Siglent SDS1102CML and I love it. Great price at £275. I would love for you to be able to do a review on it. I hope your financial situation improves, I like your content. It would be a big loss to lose you.

The rise time is measured from 10% above base to 90% of top. A trigger should only ever stop your scope, not start auto mode. if you want to run from a stopped condition you should just hit the run button. the scope doesn't constantly trigger in auto mode, it only triggers when the trigger condition is met (raising edge over your 2.something volts in your case).

The scope should show a signal still when in single shot mode until the trigger occurs. the reason why your particular scope takes forever to 'trigger' is not because it doesn't trigger right away, but because it triggers and then has to collect data for the rest of the screen/memory buffer to fill.

You should perhaps mention that the ground pin on most scopes is mains earth referenced. so if you measure some equipment that is also having it's internal ground mains earth referenced, you will have a problem if you connect your scope's ground clip to anything but the earth referenced ground level on your device. In extreme cases you may blow up your scope and/or whatever you're measuring and/or your hand.

A few comments: When using a slow timebase, you could just turn on the power supply to see the slope and the run/stop button would probably freeze the curve. When using the trigger, turn auto mode off, this way you will only see events that triggers the scope. Auto mode will automatic trigger, when no trigger condition is found to keep a line on the scope.

There is an importatnt setting in addition to the time base setting: the pre-post trigger amount! It's handy when you want to look events before or after the trigger event.

All 3 tutorials are great! Our company bought a B&K 2530B scope. I am trying to learn how to use this thing. Could you please create a video, on how to test quadrature encoders. Maybe show some problems in the signals generated and how to troubleshoot them. Also, how do you hook up a scope to troubleshoot for "Noise" in a electrical cabinet? What do I look for? And how much,is too much?

As you mentioned a few lessons back, you can't just go and plug in your oscilloscope straightaway into the mains! And here, you are connecting into a stepped down power supply. So, what is the max volts that you can place into the scope? Is there any built in protection for such an accident? Say if you are probing around and you get across mains or plate (yes, I'm dateing myself here... ;-)) voltage of a valve? And what about the dreaded direct short to ground from power supply to scope...how to avoid? Even a "cheap" scope is "expensive" (so says my wife) ;-)

really awesome video, but MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE "SWEEP" MODE TO EITHER "SINGLE" OR "NORMAL" so that your oscope can stop right when the signal happens.

Rise time is defined as the time it takes a signal to reach from 10% to 90% of its steady-state value. So the value of 23 ms given by the scope is correct. 30.8 ms is not the rise time.

0:18 where is the lost episode? Joking. Excellent video. I am using a floating oscilloscope and not getting that straight horizontal line when I turn a power supply on. Could it be because of the floating setup?

Hey Martin, this is great. I followed your video step-by-step and found that instead of a linear ramp-up to 12v like your power supply delivered, my power supply, a Thurlby Thandar PL330QMD, overshot 12v up to 13.2v before it rippled down to a steady 12v. I guess this is worrying if a circuit you are powering is voltage critical. I have a Rigol DS2072 oscilloscope for the analysis. Thanks again for the great tutorial,

I still think that should have triggered on all the events it missed, it seems pretty poor given that an edge is the easiest to trigger on. The thing I was trying to do was trigger on a serial tx and also view the rx and I couldn't find a happy medium. There is a delay function etc. And it does take a bit of practice.

I am trying to see an intermittent signal (such as me touching and untouching a test point) and can't figure out how to do it. I want the scope to show 0v as a line across the screen, but when i very briefly touch the oscope probe to 12v, it shows the jump and then goes back to showing the 0v line when not touching. I want to see a jump that remains after my brief touch is not touching anymore. So like if I touch 12v 5 times in 10 seconds, i will see the 0v line interrupted by 5 brief 12v spikes. But I have tried for what seems like an eternity of trigger options, run/stop,auto set, normal set (auto set turned off), sec/div, and I don't remember what else. No luck. I can get it set so the line jumps to 12v, but as soon as I disconnect it, the line goes back to 0v. No history. Can someone explain to me how to do this. I have a 2 channel DOS (Hantek DSO5072P).

hi martin, I really like your channel!! I wonder if it would be possible for you to review some of the cheaper USB or portable oscilloscopes (like the Hantek ones)? As i'm looking to buy a 'scope and don't know what to look for in terms of specs and they get very pricey.

This is awesome - definitely going to try it out! Unfortunately I have a really basic problem with the scope I'm using (Iso-Tech IDS-2204E) - I don't think it recognises my USB stick?! I thought I'd saved a bunch of stuff to it (definitely selected 'To File' as the destination) but none of it was on the stick when I checked afterwards. I can see the files listed in the scope's internal memory, so it looks like it just ignored my USB stick. There was definitely nothing else plugged in to any of the other ports at the time. Have you (or anyone else here?) had this happen before? I can ask around for another USB stick to try but everyone's gone home for the weekend now, I'm hoping maybe I'm missing something really obvious. Sorry to ask here - I can't find any kind of forum on the official product site. :-(

confusing how at 7:15 the term 'edge' is used for a signal line with a slope. is this expanded usage of 'edge' due the limited no. of trigger types for this scope model ? also i stumble at 12:34 over the change of trig setting from 2 v to 5 v . where 2v does not trig and 5v does. ??? the sloped line goes from 0 to12 v. so why doesnt any number in that range work as a trigger setting ? does the manual for this scope tell you to pick a trig voltage nearer to the center of the peak volt of the incoming signal ?

'Edge' is absolutely correct. The slope you see is the leading edge of the signal, and it is sloped because of the time it takes to build up (rise time). You could see a more vertical edge when he slowed the time cycles to 500ms, and then to 1s/div....but it is still an edge whether is slanted or not.

martin can u please suggest how to capture,I need to capture pulses which occurs and disappear and have a 500us width and they are of 15V.I tried single mode with rising slope ,but am not able to capture them .am using a basic oscillsope as you used here namely TBS1022 by tektronix.
