As a beginner oscilloscope user, I found this video incredibly helpful. It solved several mysteries for me. Thanks!

Just a few reasons why this video is so wonderfully helpful: your presentation and speaking (taking pauses, and only sharing the pith of what's needed), thorough but succinct explanations, and ability to anticipate what people are seeking (i.e. What are the core and essential functions across all o-scopes?) Thank you so much for clarifying quite a bit in 12 minutes. I look forward to more of your videos! :)

Stunning explanation.. The killer points made were the sharing experiences and suggesting some default settings (coupling, trigger level etc.), as much of us just want to get going.. Much obliged.

The 'earth' wire is actually bonded to the neutral bus bar at the breaker panel. So there's also a potential risk of shorting the oscilloscope's ground lead to the 'hot' side of AC mains, if one is not careful. an isolation transformer is a good thing to have on hand.

i think, as a former oscilloscope Application Engineer, including international support at R&S, that oscilloscope training needs to capture the importance of probes and probing, as "first-order" ... many, many 'oscilloscope problems' are caused by bad probing selection and application... one can think of a probe like the lens on a camera; the best camera around can only capture an image as good as the lens allows, or a certain filter used... like camera lenses, different probes are available for different applications, and the different accessories provide more flexibility in application. BTW: rule #1, in my list, is to understand the problems caused by that good old "ground lead"! its inductance leads to "noisy power supplies", and a 100-135 MHz resonance with typical 10x passive probes! look for that "funny little spring" in probe accessories, it goes onto the ground "barrel", and lets you see a much more "real" signal...rant over!
@nicholasbennett276119 күн бұрын
I like your style. So I should utilise that spring as a matter of priority?

My old analog scope recently passed away :( and I am awaiting the arrival of a new 200 MHz digital scope. Your video comparing the results from three scopes was a good into to digital scopes. Thank you.

I was gifted an old (at the time even) Hitachi oscilloscope from my Uncle with a master's in EE, around 1992. It was a completely analog scope, 2 ch, 25 Mhz, CRT. I wish i knew the model number. I spent hours playing with measuring the speaker out from my boom box's speakers and various circuits from small appliances and anything I could disassemble without getting in trouble from around the house. I was trying to understand how to use it. I wish I had this video to help explain the basics at that time. Still, it was fun. Too bad a roommate after highschool that worked in a TV/VCR/etc repair shop ended up taking it from me.

When we measured the floating DC tacho feedback signal on old servomotors we would use an isolating transformer on the CRO to avoid altering motor speed.

Digital oscilloscopes integrate the most common protocols, except that manufacturers restrict their devices. If you want to unlock a protocol, you must enter a license key provided by the manufacturer into the device interface (the price of which is prohibitive for an individual, especially if they want several protocols), which is calculated from the serial number. For an after-sales service, an R&D department of a company, or a training center, this is not a problem, since they can negotiate the price of the license keys, if they have a large enough fleet of oscilloscopes of the same brand.

I already know how to use oscilloscopes, including the memory ones that can capture a spike, I have also used hardware debugging tools I bet whoever put the list to KZbin together haven’t seen my cv, alternatively didn’t understand what it said. Why this dude calling the portable asyloscope "very old"?! I bet it didn't even have one radio lamp inside! The very old I had to use being only 36 now was as large as of the largest Samsonite you can find and waited so much that you have to use both hands when placing it on your desk!
@jenko701 Жыл бұрын
Old school scopes needed a calculator to actually get your answers . These are a lot nicer to use .
@Jonathan_Doe_ Жыл бұрын
Analog scopes give a truer waveform, and often show noise on a signal more accurately, because they’re not smoothing out steps in the X axis. If you’re feeding a known frequency into something then measuring it on the scope, no calculators really required, and the mental maths for most of the time divisions isn’t too bad anyway.
