In the previous version of the video the question arose in the comments: What is a closed mesh? It means there are no holes (as opposed to the eyeholes of Suzanne). In order to close a mesh, you need to merge vertices (ALT + M in edit mode) or create a faces to fill the holes (F in edit mode).

Instead of doing that trick with materials, you could just Ctrl+L to copy the materials. Of course, then you would need to add the original material to the rest of the mesh if it should be different, but I think it's still less hassle.

The material step should be a default action or option. isnt that hard to implement or add extra options. Lets hope an update fixes that. It was already pointed out, but Ctrl + L is much faster for adding the materials
