A few weeks ago, I cut up a pj pant that had seen better times. I used this to cut up 4 pair "muslin" panties. I sewed one and was so discouraged that I put away my supplies and went back to my T-shirt making. When I saw that you were going to do a sew along, I was ecstatic. Today I pulled out my basket and sewed along. JOY! Evidently, the stitch I was using was causing my elastic to grow (my leg elastc grew by 8 inches even though I was trying to be careful not to overstretch it). After using the "4 width and 3 length" settings, my panty turned out beautifully! Thank you!! I'm looking forward to sewing up a slew of them. I've been enjoying all of your videos lately. My anxiety levels are definitely improving while focusing on sewing and not the news that my hubby enjoys during most of his waking hours. God bless you and stay safe and healthy.

You explained it exactly right for me to understand and use this technique. Thank you for the instruction. Also, I have been wanting to make my own underwear for awhile. I am very long geared and I find I can always find the bikini fit, but I also like the full panty style, to the waist and they are impossible for me to find the right size. I also appreciate learning about a soft band, as a tshirt style, because I think of all the undies I have worn, that style really is comfortable. Thanks for the video. I downloaded the pattern and tried a muslin pair. The back fit well, but for me the front pattern was not deep enough and too wide, so using a favourite pair that fit me well I measured the difference and added an extra 1 1/2” to front depth so they came up nearer to my naval and chopped 1/2 “ off front and back side seams losing 2” in all and trued the side seams and now they fit me perfectly. I found your tutorial very helpful especially explaining the burrito bit. I used pico elastic this time but have fold over and like the jersey band idea too.

Thank you Whitney, this was a great tutorial, I really like the idea of using contrasting knit fabric, since I don’t have picot elastic. On another note. I was sewing masks for our congregation out of denim for the men, and my sewing machine Froze! The hand wheel was frozen, nothing moved. My sewing machine is an old Kenmore that I had serviced a year ago. Ugh! I have been wanting a new machine for sometime, but this machine while not fancy has done almost anything I wanted to do. A friend of ours will be looking at my machine, to see if he can fix it....I really don’t want to buy a machine without trying it out first. I have never had a computerized machine, but now I may have to. Sooo, I may be knitting again while watching you sew.
@TomKatStitchery4 жыл бұрын
Oh no! What a horrible time to have your machine on the outs!
@2Peachcobler4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear your machine has froze. Last year my Kenmore stopped working (early 70's). Turned out the clutch broke. Since I had been wanting a machine that would do embroidery I purchased a new machine that would and have loved playing with it. I did finally replace the clutch in my Kenmore so I have both machines now. I hope whatever you get will be one that you enjoy. At least you have You Tube to learn about different machines and what they have to offer so when it comes time to test drive/buy you'll have a list of ones you want to try. You may want to check out "HeirloomCreations" (if you haven't already). She takes a machine and goes through the manual page by page showing you what the machine is capable of.

Thanks for the video. What I don't understand is: The edge of the front piece and the edge of the gusset are different. One curves upward, the other curves downward. When I try to align the edge, there is a bit leftover. You also have it at 14:14. Is it normal?
@TomKatStitchery10 ай бұрын
Yes. This is normal. You are sewing a concave curve to a convex curve. This helps with the fitting of the gusset. The sewing lines of both seams are the same length, it's just that you are sewing opposing curves to one another, which can feel tricky. Because they are opposing the curves the raw edges of the seams will be different length (sew line is the same). You want to just make sure you're lining up those sewing lines and you should be good! If you just sew slowly and pull the raw edge of the "longer" back as you sew, it should fit perfectly!

The pattern reminds me a great deal of the Sew Over It's Eve Dress, but I am not sure if that one is as similar, as I do not own that pattern.

Great tutorial. What material did you use?

I used cotton/spandex jersey scraps from other projects. You could also use a viscose or rayon/spandex blend (or any knit, really). These are fabulous scrap busters!

Thanks for the very informative sew along1 I first watched this and bought the pattern when you first posted, and I am finally getting around to making them - 2 years later! Would a 100% cotton jersey be a good choice or do u think it's necessary to have some spandex in there?
@TomKatStitchery Жыл бұрын
I think you could get away with 100% cotton jersey as long as the stretch percentage matches the pattern recommendation. However, I wouldn't use just 100% cotton for the waistband or leg bands. I would either use the elastic methods or use another cotton/spandex fabric for the bands!

@TomKatStitchery4 жыл бұрын
None of them are great for the VPL, but after wearing them all, I love the FOE and the picot elastic pairs the best. They stay in place better!

I tried the self band style on a pair of underwear's leg holes this week--but the band's seam on the edges of the gusset turned out really bulky, ruining the smoothness of the burrito-style gusset. Could you include a close up of how the gusset should look when it is finished? Do you have any tips to keep the gusset area smooth? Thank you so much for posting this video! It has been SO helpful!
@TomKatStitchery4 жыл бұрын
If you’re getting too much bulk at the gusset, I would try moving the seam of the band around to the side seam of the panties. That would help to reduce bulk!
@evamuhlhause3 жыл бұрын
This is so very useful, with only a sewing machine it's gonna be a bit more tricky I suspect.
@TomKatStitchery3 жыл бұрын
Not at all! Just use a stretch stitch or a narrow zig zag for the seams (I like 1 width and 2.5 length) and you should be good!

I took an old pair of my underwear and removed all of the stitches then using the fabric pieces, I made a sewing pattern. I made myself the most adorable stretch lace bikini underwear on my serger. The lingerie elastic comes in beautiful colors and patterns. It is so soft against the skin and not at all bulky. You can make a rosette in satin ribbon to sew on the front of the waistband. You can make a pair for every day of the week in a variety of knits, jersey, and stretch laces! I love all of mine and they fit perfectly!😊

TomKat Stitchery Yes!! I really like visiting and subscribing to channels like yours!! It is wonderful that more and more people are becoming interested in sewing. I love all of it, from making my own continuous bias binding to drafting my own patterns. My garments are always on grain, plaids match, buttonholes are neat and professional, etc. When you have a passion for something, it drives you because you enjoy perfecting your craft!😊

Do you think that if you left one of the side seams open, the elastic could be sewn on straight and then the side seam and elastic could be closed in one? I’m going to try this pattern with some leopard print!🤗

Hi again. Most tutorials for sewing lingerie elastic (the one with picot edge) says to stitch as close to the decorative edge as possible for the first pass. Is it a sound advice?
@TomKatStitchery10 ай бұрын
If you're just wanting just the little picots to pop at the top, then yes.

Hi. Love your video. Wich elastic do you find is the most comfortable/less bulky please. I've been doing mine with bands but got some FOI and replaced a stretched-out waistband. It went well. I'm wanting to make a couple of new ones with a cute 4-way stretch cotton fabric a bought a couple of years ago and want to do it all FOI but I'm afraid it will be bulky for the leg bands. Ty. 🌹

After wearing these pairs for quite a bit, my favorites are the FOE pair and the picot elastic pair. They stay put the best and are the most comfortable!

The pattern for the underwear is not there anymore. Please can you help me find a copy of the pattern. Also, how do you use an overlocker successfully with stretch material?
@TomKatStitchery3 жыл бұрын
They can be found here: megannielsen.com/collections/sewing-patterns/products/acacia-underwear-sewing-pattern . There is also a separate curve pattern. What issues are you having with sewing knits on a serger? Are you getting wavy seams or something else?

Question…….is the one with the stuff like tshirts do…… actual ribbing? You know…..the circular one? Or is it the self fabric jersey? I’m so confused….lol
@TomKatStitchery Жыл бұрын
It was self fabric. You could use ribbing, but that might be a bit too textured for comfort.

I have bought knickers with fabrics bands and found the back panel relentlessly snuck up my backside. Do you think the fabric bands needed to be tighter for them to work on me? I walk briskly and wondered if they weren't suited for anything but lounging.
@TomKatStitchery4 жыл бұрын
I agree! Now that I’ve been wearing these for a while, I prefer the two that use elastic. The fabric bands move on me as well. It is possible that making them a bit smaller would help!

Thanks so much for your tutorial. I don't know if I missed it but, do you mind if I ask what type of stitch did you use with the serger?
@TomKatStitchery4 жыл бұрын
I use the 4 thread stitch on my serger for almost everything!
@MassonLifestyle3 жыл бұрын
Whitney, what type of knit are you using for these? I know what a question to ask but trying to find nice knot that is not too thick for undies, and I don’t even know what to look for at the fabric stores.
@TomKatStitchery3 жыл бұрын
I’m using t-shirt weight cotton/spandex scraps for each of these pairs. Knits can be hard to find, but StyleMaker and Minverva both have some of my favorite cotton/spandex fabrics: stylemakerfabrics.com/products/mid-weight-cotton-jersey-knit-solid-white www.minerva.com/mp/1196653/cotton-lycra-jersey-knit-fabric-soft-red&variant=1244927 These are great for t-shirts and then the scraps make perfect undies!
