tip: after earning like 6k. you can buy 2 frigates at st thomas.(250 crew ship or ships) go to port royal with enough grapeshot and chain balls and cannonballs and attck town dont destroy fort destroy another ship. there are always only one ship with a 1st rate (Idk accuracy but for me its always one 1st rate with whatever ship. bring it away from fort and paralyze it with chainballs. and get in with 250 crew from your ships. now you have a 1st rate. i will make anyone campaign easier. like pirate ships will flee when they attack you while youre going to ports

I've been useing the low tier frigate myself love it fast turns on a dime an hits hard. never worried about taking it out. I have many boats even Queen Anne but that low tier frigate is a lot of fun.

I captured 1st rate with my bigger crew. After time after time i abandoned my clipper, whaler and galleon Dolphin Edit: the pirate use their bomb to damage your ship hull so i suggest you to be careful and keep your ship stay your force

Are islands only for item production? And do the ships i leave there help with defending?

You can produce items, ships and can gain money every time you go in the islands. The ships will not help defend the port, my recommendation is to leave a port being attacked forever to keep the others safe

I use my tier 3 Snow ship fully upgraded cause I don't like small ships because they are so much weak
