Urgent UPDATE: Hey everyone - I report on the S89C being a WRGB OLED because DT reported it as such based on press releases we were given. I’m hearing that is is supposedly actually QD-OLED. I will verify with Samsung immediately and provide conclusive guidance here as soon as I hear back. I am extremely frustrated by this situation and vow to get to the bottom of it, but if I am mistaken A. I apologize and B. I hope you can understand the confusion around this. Look, if I am confused, then a LOT of folks are confused. *OG post: What’s up everybody! Great to see ya here. Thanks for all the fireplace feedback and helpful comments about audio dropouts! I heard back from Nakamichi and there’s a lot there but it looks like certain HDMI cables are causing issues. More details in this pinned comment later. I’m on the go but I’ll update soon!

I can confirm, at least in Canada, that the S89C uses a QD-Oled panel. I work as a Sony rep at a Best Buy store, and was helping my Samsung counterpart unbox the TV. As soon as we turned it on, we knew it was QD due to how clean the panel is, and upon closer look it does have the triad pixel structure.

One of these reviewers needs to just get an S89C for review and confirmation it’s not QD OLED. I think it’s odd Samsung would buy from LG and then keep the price relatively close to the S90C. I have a hunch it’s a QD panel as some of the reviews on Best Buy’s website claim.

I am wondering if the information in this video about the S89C is correct or not. I work at Best Buy and I was told by our Samsung factory rep that the S89C is a QD-OLED in the US. The only difference for US buyers is the stand. The S89C in European and Asion markets is supporsed to be an LG wOLED panel to meet EU power consumptions standards. I wish we had it on display in the store so I could just see it for myself but they didn't allocate a display unit. Hopefully the Samsungrep I spoke to wasn't spreading incorrect info to Best Buy sales staff.

I didn’t even bother to watch this video to post the following comment. As an engineer who worked on ergonomic projects, locating a tv above a fireplace is the absolute dumbest idea builders and homeowners can do. Place the tv at eye level so you do not strain your neck, shoulders and back. The heat issues will destroy the TV and any hidden wires and the amount of planning and engineering during construction will kill the builder. Locate a power and cable/internet box either right or left of the fireplace and you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed video enjoyment. Period!

On the topic of 3D: I know this is a TV review channel and so what Imm about to say may be branded heresy but here goes… anyone interested in preserving and getting the most from their 3D movie collection should really consider a projector. While 3D was abandoned by television manufacturers- many projector manufacturers continue to support the format and 3D on a projector is GLORIOUS. In fact, it’s so good and so cheap to implement you could buy an entry level projector for next to nothing and use it solely for 3D playback. 1080p DLP projectors in the $500-1000 range produce fantastic 3D image quality and DLP link glasses are cheap. If you want one display to do it all I’d suggest budgeting a bit more. The BenQ HT4550i is about the best DLP money can buy and it does a bang on job of playing back 3D as well as producing a high quality 4K/HDR 2D picture. The Epson 5050ub is another excellent choice- while it’s a lamp model and therefore getting a bit long in the tooth it still produces one of the best pictures at it’s price point and comes with gobs of advanced features typically reserved for more exotic brand projectors.

We put our TV above the fireplace as we have no other place to put it(house built 2020). However it's not an issue at all. Most fireplaces have a mantel which blocks the heat. And our mantel is low enough that eye and neck strain isn't an issue. We cannot use a mantel mount because the mantel itself would block it's function, it would lower and hit the mantel which is 14" deep.

You may not believe this but when we were looking for a house 20 years ago, the first thing I'd look for is a wall to fit a TV (CRT back then) along with my speakers and be visible from the kitchen. You'd be shocked how difficult that was back then - the American open floor plan concept is a lot less common as you'd think. But having a TV that can be enjoyed by everyone in the house is definitely a massive plus. My only problem was compromising the position of the 2 surround speakers by placing them slightly off angle but I got Atacama Nexus 6 Stands to make up for them visually. My 2nd genius move was investing in a BDI cabinet - they only had 1 model in 2 sizes back then - which allowed me to hide the center channel speaker (albeit limited to 8 inches height) and hide all AVRs and consoles while having the ability to use wireless remotes and see the information on the device which coupled with Auto Display off (on the old Marantz AVRs) was amazing. Sadly, BDI doesn't make that model anymore with the glass panels and Denon and Marantz don't have Auto Display Off to make the devices dark.

10:33 this is misleading. Alternating frames was active 3D with the active shutter glasses. That did display full 1080p per eye. The issue was the flicker for those who were susceptible to noticing it as well as ghosting due to syncing issues. Passive is where you were receiving half resolution on a 1080p set of which there were some oled 3D tvs. But the ones I belive the writter is talking about are the 4k oled 3D's of which some one else has already stated, allowed for full 1080p. resolution per eye. As a 3D fan I just wanted to clarify. Head mounted displays like nreal and rokid also offer micro oled displays with 3D capabilities and ofcourse vr/spatial computing headseats like apple vision might be the natural progression of the medium for the masses. Otherwise Been following this channel for years, great work. Glad you are open to feedback and corrections.

Well this was handy. I was literally on the verge of ordering an LG G3 for my home here in England, and it's not the biggest place and the typical UK home sizes plays into this. Being built in the 1950's, the fireplace and mantelpiece were the centre of the house and this is very common in such British homes. However, this means that the only place I can put the LG G3 (thinking 55 inch or 65 inch) over a wall section which leads up into the chimney. It's not that the chimney is even functional anymore it is just still there like it is in a lot of houses in the UK. The thought had occurred to me the rising heat or convection from the fire would potentially mess with the pixels, lenses or...something (I dunno) in the TV. I was wondering if this would be a big problem. I'm hoping to get the TV installed before the end of the January Sales to catch the price reduction. The fire we have is an electric fire which isn't sending up smoke or conventional thermal convection from a coal/wood burning fire. It's got an LED digital display and you can change the colours of the artificial flames and it doesn't look bad. A very glassy front on the fire and the heat rising from the top grill. I'd liken it to being like a giant toaster. I don't particularly want to have the LG G3 just a few feet above that, but the temperatures are usually on ranging between 18-36 degrees Celsius with settings for 1000W and 2000W heating. It shuts itself off if it gets too hot - after a few hours. It can get quite...toasty...in the smallish, typical UK sized living room. But there is literally nowhere else to put the thing. Do you think it's risky or is it not that bad?

Possibly a fix for Scott while asking about the A95L Nakamichi problem.. I have the same issue on my LG G3, and what seems to work for me is to enable HDMI eArc support in the setting, wait for the sound to play and then disabling it again. This seems to keep the HDMI handshakes stable. I already ruled out the hdmi cable as the culprit since its very new and the sound does keep working after my little procedure. With eArc enabled all the time I keep getting the audio cut-outs, so best to leave it disabled for now when it works. I hope the Sony has this ability under the HDMI settings. I am on the latest firmware for the LG G3 so hopefully a firmware updates fixes this whole mess in the future.

Did a lot of research and many other people have taken micro pictures of the pixels and show the same pixel formations as in the s90c. I even checked on bestbuy and they confirm it as well. People who say it has a woled panel, when looking at the 83’’ s90c on best buy you can see in the specifications section where it says picture quality enhancement technology it says HDR oled because that panel is indeed a woled panel but when looking at the s89c it says quantum hdr meaning it does in fact have qdoled. It even has a gen 2 qdoled panel since samsung never made a gen 1 77’’panel version. Also, with these newer homes like mine, they built these fireplaces such that the heat will only come out from the top vent facing downwards with glass over the entire fireplace. Im not sure if this will help with heating issues but i sure hope so as i am going to be investing a lot of money into mounting a tv above it. (No other place to put it)

About tv's above the fireplace.... I just clicked play so unbaislly can say....two residences I've lived in(apartment and second house......first house we used an extra bedroom with a media bench as our "theater" room) the only spot logically to put the tv in the room was above the fireplace. Largest tv I've owned is a 52" so I can install the mount and hang the tv eadily myself. Haven't had any technical issues (mantel extend far enough to deflect any excess heat and we choose our couches and ottoman so we can sit back with our feet up for extended periods of time (gaming) without fatigue. Having the tv elevated, I think, in combination with my surround sound package gives more of a Cinema experience.....yeah yeah I know i need a bigger tv so I've been eyeing a TCL 70" 4k HDR10 Lol at the Samsung question....just buy an LG then?! 😂😂😂

In an ideal world, you don’t want he the heat from your fireplace to rise. You want it to move out into your room. Fit an ornate shelf immediately above your mantelpiece, preferably one that matches your mantle and extends outwards by 4 to 5 inches from the mantle. You could even make it pelmet style. This will help deflect the heat away from your tv and even be a home for your remote control and act as a ‘cable tidy’.

Great work! Re Nakamichi sound drops: This may be totally irrelevant but my loss of audio handshake was related to eARC going from new Sony tv to a multichannel receiver. Similar symptoms - auto switching to from external speakers. Needed high quality cable but it finally stabilized when I assigned the receiver a fixed IP address. Go figure! Thought I would mention just in case.

Mounting a TV above a fireplace? Of course not. I would strain my neck in the process. If someone were to do that, I would have to stand up and watch TV instead because I have a visual impairment. I've seen people hanging TVs so high up in some houses even without a fireplace. I would have to get a pedestal so I can see what I'm watching. Not a nice way to kick back and relax. The only way if I want to watch TV is if I have my computer and home theater equipment setup in a room, especially if the house has a basement. I travel with my family who are travel nurses.

The major common mistake people do in installing TVs and even projector screens is to hang them much higher than their eye level. As if it's a mountain peak to behold. And even if they do hang it bit lower, they usually keep it at their eye level meeting the center of the screen while in standing position! As a matter of fact, and as per my experience, TVs shoud be hanged/placed with their upper edge meeting at the level of your eye while you're at seating position. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the 'Balcony' seating in theatres in older days that used to be pricier than general seating below the balcony. The Balcony viewing would be looking a bit down on the screen. Thats the best position. For projector screens try to get the lower edge 6 inches apart from the floor. The immersive experience will increase as well. Try it out if you haven't done already.

The panel in the S89C is a QD-OLED, the only difference from the S90C is the stand and the price tag. I have to say that it's not a great look acting as an authority/expert on a product based on foreign trade press instead of the actual manufacturer and retailer specs for a product that was available in the US a month before this video was published. I get it - KZbin doesn't always age well, but this is a top-rated video when consumers search for S89C, and we're a few months out from the misinformation in the video, and most viewers don't read pinned comments. I'd love an edited version of the video, and think it's the ethically proper thing to do for tech journalism. It was wrong when it was posted, it's wrong now, and it'll be wrong in six months unless action is taken. And the absolute GALL to keep a sponsored affiliate link to the purchase page of the S89C in the video description under the video improperly slagging on it? Total amateur hour over here.

Regarding the Sonos and in ceiling speakers. Just wanted to share that about 10 - 11 years ago I went all in on Sonos for two houses, were great. BUT, just recently I have had about 5 of the 10 speakers go bad. Essentially the wifi section was going out and/or sound and no sound. Bottom line yes they are old, but like my man cave my speakers with a receiver will last pretty much forever. Just a comment as you may want to reconsider just how much you spend on Sonos when a good wired speaker will pretty much last forever. I am going just bare bones on Sonos with limited speakers. NO WAY would I go with a Sonos full system for say TV surround sound. Great episode as always!

On the topic of TVs over the fireplace, I've started seeing more homes with corner fireplaces, as well as a move away from the giant walls of windows that encouraged putting the TV over the fireplace in the first place. Really the fireplace is the worst place to put a TV. The only advantage to having it over the fireplace I see is that in an open concept situation it can be more easily seen from the kitchen and dining room. For the majority of TV watching though, it is not a comfortable position.

Can’t remember the model but I bought a Sony smart tv and hooked it up to a Samsung soundbar. Had the exact same issue where every ~15 minutes the audio would cut out briefly and it would say “switching to TV speakers” then would switch back about 10 seconds later. Super annoying! Tired using a different HDMI cable then I moved the soundbar to a different TV and didn’t have any issues so suspect the issue was with the TV. Tried resetting/updating and playing with pretty much every audio setting available with no success. Contacted Sony and after running through similar troubleshooting steps with them they ended up advising me to return it. Had similar issues with other Sony TVs too.

Well, 3d is turning out to be hard to find at the theater too even real IMAX theaters... For me 3d added about a 1 point to 1.5 points per movie especially if the movie was done well in 3d. Shockingly, it didn't bother me one bit that the resolution was cut in half. Of course, passive was better than active 3d not only in terms of comfort but also perception. It's not for all content but it does improve movies.

Please bring this to the attention of anyone you can at CES or any of your other contacts. I like many have difficulty hearing, therefore I use bluetooth headphones. I recently purchased a U7K tv, only to find it no longer supported dual audio out. In other words, I can’t enjoy watching tv with headphones while anyone else watching is using tv speakers or vise versa. My only option now is to return tv and spend almost 1.5-2x more for Samsung, for it is the only manufacturer that apparently still supports (people with disabilities) multiport/dual audio out. Hopefully by bringing awareness, others like me will have choices in the future. Thanks!

Thank you, Caleb. Always enjoy your updates! I was going to submit a question on an issue I have with a Sony/Bose combination. Then you addressed the Sony/Nakamichi question. With respect to the question on the Sony and the Nakamichi 'drop-outs', this is similar to the issue that I have had from the start with my Sony A8G and Bose 900 soundbar. When turning the TV on, it either takes an extended period for the TV/Soundbar to start up or the Bose does not connect at all and the TV messages "Switching to TV speakers" or some variation. After many hours on the phone and in chats with Bose (Who were patient and professional), it remains unresolved (Really like the bar; really frustrated at the drop-outs and requirement to re-boot the TV and soundbar until they connect). I attributed it to an earlier broadcast when you vented about the poor performance/state of CEC. Is it Sony? (A similar issue with an 850D and a Bose 500)...or is it Bose? ...or is it CEC? Or is it that I have an aura that messes up all the tech in my house? (That is my wife's answer...) Does this happen (potentially) with all TVs and all soundbar combinations? (From other comments, it seems that it might..)
