It was the MTV alternative for African Americans because MTV didn't show many black artists in the early to mid 80s unless it was Prince or Michael Jackson.

I read Bob Dole's book, he was injured fighting the Wehrmacht in Italy. He was a Platoon leader, 2nd Lieutenant with the 10th Mountain Division a brand new umit, quite revolutionary in that they weren't all stoic & militaristic, they were laid back & they treated each other equally, no difference between an officer and an enlistedman. They trained in mountain warfare , skiing, etc, at Camp Hale Colorado then to Italy for 114 days of combat. They were an elite unit. 2Lt. Dole was hit by a field Artillery shell, 88mm, he was lucky to have survived the shelling, many of his platoon didn't.

You can say that about a lot of SNL's humor from 1975 to...I guess 2016? Even the critically bad seasons (6, 11, and 20) had a lot of un-PC humor, even if it came off as dull, lazy, or misfired (6 was dull, eleven was misfired, and 20 was dull, misfired, and lazy). By the time Hanna Barbera did Super Friends, they had stopped with all of that flashing light motifs because of epileptic kids. The colors were bright, but they were static.
