No fewer than 50 persons lost their lives in a petrol tanker explosion on Saturday along Dikko-Maje road opposite Badeggi fuelling station in Suleja local government area of Niger.
Mr Kumar Tsukwam, Federal Road Safety Commander (FRSC) in Niger, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna.
He said a loaded petrol tanker fell at the scene of the incident with people scooping the spilling fuel, unaware of the impending danger.

Greed, poverty and stupidity costs lives. There is nothing more annoying than when I see my people die from preventable causes. How many times will Africans have to die in such circumstances before we become wise? I guarantee that this type of carnage does not happen elsewhere in the world without there being a proper investigation to prevent it from happening ever again. However it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know why these accidents continually occur especially in Nigeria. 1). Firstly we have road users who have not passed their driving test but are behind the wheel of vehicles. 2). Secondly, we have corrupt road traffic officials who fail to enforce road standards such as speeding, a vehicle's roadworthiness, checking to see whether the driver is driving under the influence of substances etc. All they are interested in is collecting bribes. 3). The roads are not properly maintained and are dangerous for road users. 4). There is not enough education/awareness in society about the dangers of fuel and open flames. Only in Nigeria will you find people who on seeing a vehicle with fuel leaking from it will a crowd of people run to the incident carrying their babies and smoking cigarettes ...... anywhere else in the world, where they have more sense, they run away from such incidents. This video says that sixty people have lost their lives (some reports say more). SMDH. However the real trauma is much deeper because those sixty people come from sixty families who are now grieving about a lost relative. Each life lost is a complete tragedy and a loss of potential on its own. The truth is that Nigeria does not care about the safety of its citizens, because if it did it would implement the obvious precautions to prevent these accidents from occurring. It would also prosecute those individuals and companies who violate road standards. PS: Look at the so called "fire fighters" in this video. They are not even wearing the proper fire retardant material. SMDH.

Truly very sad .. its a pure circus in these climes and rural areas in this country called Nigeria. Another sad truth is that, if we check there is probably not nice resting place to lay the departed to rest. The government in Nigeria is evil, dts what the bitter truth is.

@: From what I understand from the news reports, they just dug a pit and threw all of the bodies in there. I am certain that they did that without properly identifying the remains of all of the individuals and informing their loved ones of the tragedy. One can only imagine that some families will be looking for their loved ones for years to come. SMDH. Nigeria needs to do better.
