The judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria represents a severe violation of our democratic principles. The 25% allocation to the FCT should be considered inviolable. This indicates that our country is being governed by individuals with a high level of criminality. Now, let's analyze the impact of this judgment. Nigeria is more divided than ever before due to the Supreme Court's assertion that the FCT holds no special status. This means that in future elections, presidential candidates may exploit regional and ethnic divisions to garner more votes in their respective regions. Consequently, the region with the highest population will consistently emerge victorious, undermining the fundamental democratic principle of power rotation. This judgment has impeded the progress of our electoral laws. They can no longer be amended to yield more democratic dividends by updating the constitution to promote unity through the requirement that presidential candidates campaign across various geopolitical regions and the FCT. It can be argued that the Supreme Court has taken us a step backward in our democratic journey. The interpretation of the word "and" by the Supreme Court has eroded the public's confidence in the judiciary, INEC, and the electoral process. This could result in reduced participation in future elections. Winning subsequent elections may now be determined by a "snatch, grab, and run" style of politics. In a well-functioning democracy, individuals like Tinubu would have been disqualified for advocating such tactics and instructing their supporters to steal "ballot boxes." Finally, I commend His Excellency Peter Obi for his unwavering commitment to the cause. He fought tirelessly from the beginning to the end, compelling the Supreme Court to explain how the Constitution is interpreted. It raises questions as to why they allowed Peter Obi to spend his time and resources pursuing a fraudulent interpretation of the electoral act when INEC could have addressed this matter prior to the election. It is indeed a somber day for Nigeria.
