I believe that with each guy she was with (Matt, Stefan, and Damon) there’s a phrase for each. With Matt, it was a “for now” type situation, they weren’t together for very long and it was like a trial and error sort of thing. With Stefan, it was a “for awhile” situation, they were together and it was like Elena’s first real love and they were together for a little bit longer. With Damon, there love was toxic at first but they worked through it in the end and it was a true love sort of deal, “forever”.
