"Moonlight Serenade" was used in that scene at 3:00, 'blastingrod', because RCA Victor records was promoting a revival of Glenn Miller's recordings {due to the release of "The Glenn Miller Story" in early '54}, and this was a subtle reminder as to what RCA's record division was "pushing" at the time....I'm sure there's one "distant" station playing that music at night where you are!

1:03 It's strange to think that people used to pay for a new picture tube for an old TV. Even by the 1990s, there wasn't much more in the cabinet than the CRT and now most problems will make the flat screen set a throwaway. Of course a cheap Westinghouse TV (about $300) cost less, adjusted for inflation, than a new color picture tube cost in the 1970s.

Technology goes by the wayside so quick, I remember my first VCR in 1986 with its 2 event 7 day programmable timer that had to be entered into it on the device and was not able to be on the remote...and then you had to search thru the VHS tape for your recordings.

RCA Actually let sony tour their picture tube plant in lancaster Pa. Now Sony is huge in Television and people say remember RCA.

Not all RCA Victor ads promoted their line of "color" models, 'glenn'. If it was a VERY special promotion (say, a "compatible color" telecast of a special RCA was sponsoring), then they would plug the hell out of it. NBC, RCA's subsidiary, only broadcast a bare handful of regular color series on their network in 1954, and the price of the sets was often beyond the average customer's budget {$2000 and up for most models}.

A 21 inch was all we ever needed, in monochrome too, with 4 or 5 channels, plus furniture. That AM. Clock radio was a great appliance, it made coffee too! Show me a cell phone that can do that. The music content and programming was the best ever, until the Devils music ( Rock and Roll) came to the forefront. Believe me I know, having lived through it all.

That's Stan Sawyer, "the voice of RCA", [second only to Vaughn Monroe as the company's "star salesman" in the '50s] in these spots. Almost all of these ads were originally seen in the spring of 1954....

Color TV Was Introduced By RCA In April,1954,But How Come They Arent Promoting It In These Ads?

It's impossible to promote color TV on a black & white set and in 1956 95 percent of TVs in America were b&w.

Color TV, Being new. was a niche of a niche market. Most ads are going to focus on the "bread and butter" market. You see Wayyyy more ads for Pepsi than Champaign. The market for B&W sets was greater and would be for YEARS to come. Color sets did not outsell B&W sets until 1972!!! PS on an Odd note; Even though RCA developed the color system that was adopted, they ironically were NOT the first company to sell a consumer set using it: Westinghouse beat them to it ,LOL.

RCA attributes Ruth Lyons in Cincinnati for promoting color television. Cincinnati had more color televisions in peoples homes than anywhere in the country! Ruth Lyons had a tv show in Cincinnati that switched from black and white to color and everybody went out , inthe midwest to buy a color television so they could see Ruth Lyons in color! I believe it was 1958. RCA CALLED CINCINNATI COLOR TOWN U.S.A.

Rca just a name now days they went under in 80s I think miss mangmet and Selectvison disk made them fail. It. Worth note I type this worst quality tablet with has Rca name. On it lol.

The RCA CED video disk destroyed the company that was already in trouble from other products. It was sold to Thompson Electronics in 1989 and is now nothing more than a brand name slapped onto consumer products.

If you were replacing your picture tube in 1956, buy a different brand of television. TV at it's infancy, and you are already replacing your picture tube, something is wrong, no one should have been replacing a picture in 1956.

Good grief. What in the heck is a "Classified Directory" sounds "Top Secret" fancy words for the "Yellow Pages" which replaced "classified directory" by the time i was born. But today i suppose yellow pages would be ignorant, racist & called Business Listings. But back in the early days of television this was HIGH TECH coming to your living room. Which today is as routine as Apple stamping out a copy of Dick Traceys wrist phone, but for the price double that of a 1949 RCA brand new blacknwhite TV. Make no mistake there is NOTHING "High Tech" sold to the consumer until many years after the military has agreed to it being sold to consumers & years of R&D for anything that goes into anything we own these days as civilians. We don't have a clue whats High Tech because its in a research lab or a hospital. Millions are being spent testing it & if its electronic it needs to be cleared & approved by many governments. Odds are it will take us into space just as it took us to the moon in 1969. A Simple device we had which prevented the Russians from landing on the moon the integrated circuit of multiple microscopic transistors connected with pure gold wire 1/3rd the thickness of a human hair. More complicated than reattaching a severed finger these connections led eventually to processing information & the microprocessor & that tiny guidance computer which without would of shot the astronauts well beyond ability to get to the moon & would have drifted off which is the only reasons the Russians could not go to the moon. They didn't take seriously any need to improve the transistor beyond what Sony did for the transistor radio. They saw no need for calculators to fix the immense mathematical equations required after getting into space. Everything we have today, we had then. But High Tech ended there after it was built. Its just plain ol technology today in which we improve upon but its still from everything invented backwards in time to the first electronic component ever invented, the Capacitor, invented 1745 & then forward in time to invention of the first Microprocessor at Intel in 1971. While some may argue the relay was the first electronic component as it was the first which made practical use of electricity with invention of the telegraph, you can not throw out how important the capacitor was after the telegraph. Well, it was invented in 1745. And while surface mount technology is how all printed circuit boards are used today it only improves upon components size not its function. Simply said... HIGH TECH started in 1745 & the last invention was in 1971... most importantly our entire economy & society runs off of that 1971 invention. It in of itself invented a process to build a mini computer within a single component. Although similar to the IC the single chip gives direction, the MP solves the problems that bog individual chips down. Much to the thanks of the Transistor... which made the IC & MP possible & could not be invented without. The transistor is probably the single most important invention to man. But again, could not be Conceived or invented without everything backwards from 1946 to 1745.
