Most people when returning a smash, swings far. All you need to do it block it. Use a backhand grip to return a smash as it will take less time to reach. Put your racket foot slightly forward and stand shoulder width apart. All you need to do is block and with the backhand grip, which gives you 330 degrees of available movement.

1. feet need to be wider apart 2. knees need to be bent a little more 3. lean forward slightly 4. keep the racket head at throat level while keeping the hand at armpit level 5. maintain a neutral trip that allows for backhand and forehand shots 6. tap the bird, do not swing. 7. refrain from intentionally moving your upper arm… in other words lead with your forearm and wrist

derockn00 Totally agree!!! (you have a great understanding of the return) BTW leaning forward if you are keen on taking the shuttle early else neutral posture in the upper body (i personally lean forward) Relaxed grip up until point of contact with shuttle. Whip like action on the tap backhand return (do not swing) Fluid movement from legs up (don't be stationary before and after the return as you will snatch shots rather the play them) Very valid point made about keeping the racket up. So many fail this and keep racket low (which reduces reaction time)

I know these guys personally, Sean and Julio are way better than they were on the video. No, idea what went wrong. Sean started training really early, regular club players won't even reach that level.

RJS98 I don't go around recording stuff and upload it on KZbin claiming it to be a 'tutorial' now, do I? Just shut up next time and save yourself from looking stupid with that idiotic reply. You can clearly see the smash was weak and failed attempts on blocking the smash. Am I suppose to say, ' well done boys..you guys smash way better than Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan. You guys are great.' No. Because I am not a keyboard warrior with a stupid comeback like you.

Gameday Schameday Hi there mate, I think you're being a bit of a bitch right now. I don't think you understood what I meant. What I'm trying to say is that he probably smashed it slow so the other guy could return it. P.S. I use an IPad, no keyboard ;)

Well, ol' Julio managed to get three of the five rather tepid smashes back over the net using the instructor's technique. I guess that they had already decided that they weren't going to do more than one take on the filming.

it depends on the smash. if the smash is flat u use to block it but when the smash is deep to the centre court u need to lift it higher to the base line. wrist power are important.

well, this may be useful in singles and certain times in doubles. But most of the time in doubles, which is when you would see most smashes, one of your opponents will be standing in front of the net to kill your block.

you dont return smash to net if you playing double, cuz if there's a little mistake you would get net smash from opponent at front net. unless the opponent on defense mode. but i got the idea what you trying imply. you return the opponet smash by using shuttlecock momentum, right? so you dont need full lift, just need a little tap.

It's really just practice. No matter how fast someone smashes, in the end, you're only intercepting the smash, which is why you will and are supposed to be faster. If you are slower, it just means you need more practice.

Not good idea. You need to clear the net when returning a smash or else the person at the net in doubles is going to strike back.
