Funny coincidence for me with the timing of this video. For the past 2-3 weeks, I've been slowly realizing that I use my wrist way too much. Hurt my wrist prior, and I realized that my backhand kills have been better because I have not been flexing/bending my wrist as much lately. Nice to see that it's not just a theory, but relevant to good technique. I live in an area where the badminton community is pretty small, so you will hear all the amateur players (some of whom are quite skilled regardless) tell you contradictory things. One of the best players here, who is capable of any type of return from anywhere on the court, told me that it was all about the wrist! These are the types of videos that really make this channel stand out

Thank you so much for this video tutorial. I have just started playing badminton, in a social setting. I'm a tennis player, so a bit of adjustment needed. Haha. The first time I did ok. And the 2nd time I started to make many errors. And it slowly became a situation where "everyone is an expert". I was that overwhelmed with information that I lost my self-confidence and had a terrible day. I was lucky that one of the experienced women, who had played competition taught me some basics which helped. However, watching this tutorial has not only been beneficial, but the explanations are clear and easy to understand, so thanks again, truly.

Great tips! I play both darts and badminton, it's true that we use fingers to propel the darts more than the wrist. Scottish darts player Gary Anderson mentioned that he uses his middle finger to push off from the point, which is why he's using grooved points.

Very nice video! I'm a coach from Germany and I always tell my players to keep the wrist in a relaxed/neutral position for all basic shots. The wrist by design really isn't made to accelerate/generate power. In Badminton you only really use the wrist for deceptions/sliced shots.

✋ Thank you very much for this great explanation!!! I watched a lot of videos searching for the right wrist movement in smash which I struggled with a lot. And I think I finally got it! Probably I got too literally the phrase that we should use wrist) So I did the same too long wrist movement in smashes as you showed here in all other shots. And even watching smashes in slow-mo I couldn't realize how their hand ended up in quite straight position after the hit. Instead my arm was almost "folded" with my thumb very close to the wrist. Just as you showed in "don'ts". I tried different ways to fix this but ended up in just completely losing control. But now in your video I saw what I didn't notice before. And yes, this is probably also what makes my backhand shots weaker. And all other shots. So again thank you very much, I can't wait for the next training to practice all this) P.S. I just wonder, how can we train to stop a too much wrist movement during the final stages in a smash, and not stopping the whole hand movement at the same time? Because when I try to stop my wrist it seems I also begin to stop my hand a little so losing a little bit of power. How can we train this to be able to "separately" control wrist and the whole hand?) P.P.S. Funny joke in the end of the video, about using our fingers to subscribe))

nice video. short note: it's good that you show what you can do wrong when hitting the shuffle. People understand what's wrong with the motions and techniques, but they can't learn to avoid wrong techniques. People need to learn from the right way. So my suggestion is to show a good example after every bad example to get from what is wrong to how one can make it right :D

On the serve, I hold the racket with 2 fingers, thumb and index. Then, I serve without moving my writs or arm, they stay steady. What I do is use the last 3 fingers to snap close quickly for the short and flick serve. The difference between the short and flick serve is the distance of the racket to the bird. This serve is undetectable between the 2 serves. Also, I found helpful is to hold the bird 90 degrees to the strings. Holding the bird directly facing the strings makes the flick serve too slow because the bird has to change direction 180 degrees. On the backhand, my favorite, you are holding the racket with 2 fingers, thumb and index to pivot the grip. When you hit the bird, you are closing you last 3 fingers yet pivoting on the index and thumb which gives you a lot of movement on the racket. Additional movement is required with the writs and arm to make a backhand cross-court clear. Remember, let the bird drop around head height to protect your shoulder. If the bird is coming to you high on your backhand, run around to your forearm and hit the bird normally. Only use the backhand when you cannot run around to your forearm.
