Across Cheshire today in our ancient churchyards and churches we find carved stone effigies and tomb chests from a bygone age. Carved from solid stone, marble and alabaster these monuments represent knights, noblemen and the landed gentry.
Many of these stunning carvings date from the early medieval period right through to the late 19th century. Join me as I take you on my personal journey of discovery as I visit just a handful of these beautifully carved effigies and tomb chests from our past.

many thanks Judith. When I film these effigies I am normally the only one present at the time. Its a strange feeling being alone with these ancient pieces of our history...

What a wonderful testament to respecting those who came before us. We share the same needs, desires, and all that make us human.

@@Tvpresenter4history That’s more good news. I’m in the US, and some have traced our Massey family to Hamon and the rest. Beginning with your Watch Hill Castle exploration, I’ve been thrilled with your tours.

Really enjoyed that and looking forward to next instalment. Is it possible to add what the various carvings that are at the feet and head of these beautiful effigies represent?

It is possible but takes up a lot of time within the film. Most represent lions/dogs etc and usually linked to heraldic elements of the family. You can find many more episodes for free on my channel kzbin.info

@@Tvpresenter4history She is very similar to my favorite upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/29/Jennie_McGraw_sarcophagus%2C_Sage_Chapel%2C_Cornell_Univ_Ithaca_NY.jpg (I restored the inscription over her effigy many years ago). She donated the original chime of 8 bells to the university and the Cornell Chimesmasters (of which I was one) leave flowers on her tomb.
