This is a perfect guide for beginners, just make sure you choose a model that is similar to the model he chose as you can not remove / add bones. Pretty sure you would need to edit the qc file in that case.

I cannot get the textures to work for the life of me, I'm making sure it's the same name as the one shown in blender, I gave it a VTF and a VMT that was Vertexlit generic and it's still not showing up properly, the file directory matches up with the QC materials/models/(nameIputforit) and it's still just missing textures.

You can also decompile using steamworkshopdownloader.io For using Gmad, you have the place the downloaded .GMA mod the same folder as Gmad Extractor. Then click Gmad.exe

The software doesn't see the mesh fitting with the skeleton. Try alining the model with the skeleton. Make it smaller. Or you could try this: it got to do with the amount of polygons. Checkout this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIbVZJadaJp6h6c 👍 Hopefully it's also useful for you.

Not sure on this one, I would try 🤔 to download a model which looks like the one you want, and has jiggly bones. Follow the same step except weight paint the bones yourself.

12:10 This won't work for low poly models I'm afraid. You'll have to manually weight-paint the model yourself. To do that, go into object mode, shift click the mesh, and then go into weight-paint mode. CTRL+Click the base of a bone and then select the mesh areas that you think should be connected to the bone.

You have to do weight paint. It's not that difficult. Search some tutorials online about Weight paint it fixes your problem 👍👍 It it painting on the model to assigning the bones to the mesh.

im trying to follow this but the models I'm using are kinda weird. they're either SFM XPS or I'm even using OBJ's but it just doesn't turn out. like the OBJ files keep giving me an error (Bone Heat Weighting: failed to find solution for one or more bones) or the textures are all clumped in one or two files making it harder to apply a texture, idk why its so hard to just make a ragdoll

@@circl3trees351 Sadly, the project is no loner in effect, as my friends only steam account got hacked a while ago, meaning he lost every single games he had. And on my end, since I am now 18 and used to share half of my game library with my older brother (Garry’s Mod included), caused me to proggressively lose access to his games more often, and eventually to the point where they haunt my library with a “purchase” button on it. Until I can get enough money to buy it again for me + a copy for my friend + all the source stuff, the project has stopped entirely. But fear not, my dear interlocuter! For I still have my dream of making custom models for games, either for GMod or for Mods for actual games! Although not now, as I have no real project ideas settled yet, or friend commissions, but it will eventually happen, and you eventually I’ll be able to leave my artistic mark on the gaming world one way or another.

I have a problem, everything has worked until I open it in hlmv and then the skeleton has moved itself back into the position of the skeleton I started with, even though I edited it but its distorted my model. how do I make sure it keeps the shape that I set it as? the weight painting is fine but I checked in hlmv and I can see the skeleton is wrong

The only issue I have is that I've already finished everything, but in-game my model stretches to be as big as the reference model (my model is shorter than the original skeleton's model) and I can't figure out what went wrong but at least it works and I had no problem with textures

I think you have the paths wrong. Just recheck every path, and folders in between, also check in .qc for the paths.

No, Just use the SMD you have, no need for the Workshop one. There shouldn't be more errors in doing that. (Tip: Always and ALWAYS, try to follow very attentively and try not to make any errors in scripts, wrong folders or names.) Good luck buddy 👍

@@Matschaak So I finished the model. When I loaded up the game the model is stuck in a constant t-pose. It has all its textures and everything. Even has loads up as a playermodel. When I spawn in the ragdoll its standing up t-posed but I can still move it around. Even has ragdoll noises. Any suggestions on what I did wrong?

@@havalkanalismi4045 The viewer has an issue. That is known. Its really buggy and indeed it does not properly. Like it corrupts or something after some point. Just try and see in gmod

in the future 1. have some small script from start to finish so no surprises 2. adjust volume in editor (too quiet) other than that good stuff

So I followed this tutorial to a T.. got everything working in some regard.. i can use the player model and spawn the ragdoll while the textures have an invalid path but the moment i set the texture to a valid path gmod will freeze and then crash after 30 minutes to an hour.. i dont know how to fix this..

I dont know how but it fixed itself in an older version of the compiled model.. i think its got something to do with the fact that i changed the material type and file name of the vtf & vmt files but kept the base texture the blender file uses as a png which was copyed and the copy was changed to a jpg / jiff

Whenever I install a workshop mod with crowbar (it can be a weapon mod, playermodel, etc) it causes the mod to bug out ingame and cause LUA errors as well as not show up. Crowbar installs it on it's own and causes the workshop version of the mod to be useless. I tried resubscribing to the addons and dropping the downloaded folders into garrysmod/addons and it doesn't work

@@Matschaak I'm not trying to upload anything, it's a general problem I have when downloading mods with crowbar, it converts it to a file but bugs out that mod.

@@doublebarrelslugs59 Oh downloading the mod? You can also download via Steamworkshopdownloader.io or something. If you mean compiling, does it give error in crowbar. And do you use the right version of crowbar?

@@Matschaak I got the issue fixed, it seems that crowbar overrides the workshop installation of the item and then the item requires it's file to be on the garrysmod/addons folder in order to work properly. Basically it manually installs it off of the workshop and then you need that file for it to work.

So I'm trying to port a lego model and it all went well following your tutorial and all, but I noticed it's hands are missing textures when opening it in gmod. It turns out they are actually a colour in blender (obj file) and not a texture. So I guess you have to convert the colour to a texture or is there another solution for this? Anyone who can help me get rid of these missing textures?

I've trid to port l4d2 survivors to playermodels. I try both gmod playermodel skeleton and l4d2 model skeleton it self but it result in t-pose. What cause this to happen?

Did you do part with the automated Weights and Created it into 1 mesh also? Did the model move in pose mode? In the right way? Like in the video?

Wrong scripts names or folder displacements could also be a problem.

I did, but a error message appear said "Bone Heat Weighting: failed to find solution for one or more bones" and when i move to model in pose mode everything is fine execpt the back hair (my port character is female) does that mean it miss back hair bone? and i have to manually bone by my self?

The model is too complicated, lower your vertexes or manual weight paint.

Skeleton and mesh aligment issue, Probably too much vertexes, reduce them of wight paint it manually.

I do always get this error message when i want to decompile it: "File does not have expected MDL header ID (first 4 bytes of file) of 'IDST' or 'MDLZ' (without quotes). MDL file is not a GoldSource- or Source-engine MDL file. ... Decompiling ".\saofeng.mdl" FAILED." I need some Help on that...

I found a solution on the internet. Just unpack it with Crowbar. And then i can decompile it. Problem solved.

Uhh is a error in blender or in crowbar? It sounds like there are too many polygons, but I'm not quite sure on this one. Already done a good internet search 🔎?

@@Matschaak It could be that there's to many polygons, it a detailed mesh, ill just crank up the decimate modifier then apply it again. and its a error in crowbar while compiling

For some reason, when I try to decompile a model from the workshop using Crowbar, I get the error: "File does not have expected MDL header ID (first 4 bytes of file) of 'IDST' or 'MDLZ' (without quotes). MDL file is not a GoldSource- or Source-engine MDL file." I've tried it with several different models off the workshop, and I get the same results. I even tried it with the Sao Feng model you used, but no luck with that. Also, I have all the Set Up Games options as you do in the video. Can anyone help?

Nvm, I had a weird GMad version. Make sure you specifically get the one called "Gmad - Easy Addon Extractor" from Game Banana!

Sounds like a weight paint issue. Try manually painting the weight. Tutorials are on youtube on that.

Wow what. Did you changed it to rest pose in blender? Oh wait I know why. You scaled or moved the skeleton. You can't change anything about that. Just use fresh skeleton ctrl join and paint manually again.

Very good and concise video, thanks for creating. One problem I am having and I can see a similar affect on your finished Dora model is that the arms are shown up really wavy, like they bend in two spots. The short dora arms sorta hide this problem but it looks pretty poor with regular sized arms. How can this be fixed? Is this based on the initial captain sao feng model having his joints bent at certain angles all the time? Thanks.

This is an issue that comes with the inaccuracy of automated weights. You edit/fix it by manually applying weight paint. It takes some time and skill. But it the correct way.

im having an issue with garrys mod thinking that my model is in an a-pose when its in actually in a t-pose. i used the same sao feng model as you did in the video and moved the joints into a t-pose like you did, but when i opened the model in the model viewer, it forced the joints into an a-pose while keeping the weights, so the arms look zig-zagged. other than that, everything else seemed to work perfectly

@@Matschaak ive already done that, it moves perfectly in blender. when i look at the model in the model viewer, i turned on the "physics model" button and it looks like that the hitbox is set to an a-pose which is forcing all of the joints into it. is there a way i can fix that or should i just find a model from the workshop thats a t-pose?
