Such a difference in the demeanor of the employees versus modern times. Thoughts and complaints were very direct and focused, no rambling or whinning, yet still focused on customer satisfaction.

Gee I felt terrible for the ground service agent, she was really hurting in relating on the lack of recognition and conflicting instructions from management. And what a beautiful lady with the cutest nose I have ever seen. It was tragic to lose Pan Am and TWA, both were quality carriers for most of their histories with a lot of nice people representing them.

Dude, had TWA heed this 'very early warning call'...TWA would be here today! No question about it!
@stoph31111 жыл бұрын
TWA was one of the worlds' greatest airlines, and it was run into the ground by management, especially by Carl Ichan. These employees were right to question...they were concerned about the company they dedicated their careers to.

Bravo Ignatz20! The cabin crew employees who have been around since 1968 feel the same way. Like the woman said at the end, "I've been around too long to think anything is going to change!" Can you imagine a video like this being made today - at United, for example? A lot of "bleeps" in place of their actual words. But you are completely correct, Ignatz20 - either you accept reality and make the best of it (every single day) or you move on.

The comment about not enough ground crew to handle the jumbo jets is spot on. A friend who worked for United in the 50's, 60's and 70's always said that was the reason for the demise of service in the airline industry. NOT deregulation. The airlines didn't hire additional ground staff when they transitioned from propeller to jet aircraft. So you had the same amount of ground staff handling a DC-6 that holds maybe 80 passengers as they did handling a DC-10 with 300 passengers.

I agree with everything that is been said on the video and posts, I was an airline airbus technician and nothing has changed today from the old days.

great history lesson. The pilots were paid quite a bit back in the day so their voice is tempered. Interesting piece of labor history.

There was this horrible reservations manager who worked for TW in LAX. He was one nasty piece of work. I hope that he was the first person to be made redundant when TW was merged into AA.

I skimmed through this, but some things never change. Most of these complaints you will hear from employees today, and not just airline employees.

reality: workers are always too many and too easy to replace. Loyalty is the paycheck.

The best employee is a happy employee ! These people look depressed, Unions may not be the answer but the airlines having full power over its workers is not the answer either. Its amazing how scared they appear.

TWA did not treat their employee well from what I have seen in this video maybe that's the reason went banckrupt
@rolfen11 жыл бұрын
Of course, for every one of the "whiners", you have 10 who are eager to take his place (or at least pretend to be). The temptation is great to have them replaced. It doesn't take a genius, nor an out of ordinary "manager" understand that it makes sense to do so, espcially in the short-term, tactical point of view. Now the question is, in the long run, do you prefer a "bunch of whiners" or a bunch of robots?
@michaelbassett5464 жыл бұрын
Airlines. So what is your question? Employees. Everything!
@Treetop6412 жыл бұрын
The first two said they have questions, but made only statements. XD Based on many of these comments (financial issues, information blackout to employees, top-heavy management, etc...) it's apparent that the boardroom couldn't give any less of a damn about these people's concerns. By this stage TWA was already imploding...

what I find interesting about this video is that the complaints the employees are making in 1970 are the same as they are today in 2015. I have been an airline employee since 1982. I have seen it all and I have been through it all.......mergers, acquisitions, bankruptcys , liquidation, leveraged buyouts, staffing reductions. It hasn't changed. It was that way in 1935, and it is that way today, and will continue that way. Although now, with only a few major players left since deregulation, things will probably be quite stable for awhile. My point is this.............the airline industry is very unstable. You either love it or hate it. If you hate it...........leave.

Right. Well hindsight is 20/20. Maybe if TWA had listened, they would still be around. After all, the most successful companies are companies with happy employees.
@ignatz209 жыл бұрын
Actually, I think the most successful companies are companies with happy customers.
@JustinLHopkins9 жыл бұрын
ignatz20 Happy employees create happy customers. The most successful companies in the world have high employee satisfaction. Along with employee satisfaction, they also have the highest customer satisfaction. If employees are unhappy, the customers will be unhappy. It all starts at the top.
@ignatz209 жыл бұрын
It's not that simple. It depends on the industry, the profit margin. Some employees will never be happy.
@JustinLHopkins9 жыл бұрын
ignatz20 You're right. Some employees will never be happy, but those people are generally unhappy with life.

You really have to be careful what you go on camera and say about your company, especially in economic times like this. I wasn't around back then so maybe this is all true, but they do sound like a bunch of whiners and I'd probably fire them if I was management too for putting out a video like this.
