Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I’m near the end of my airline career now, and I really enjoyed this. Over the course of my career I flew about 10,000 hours in the MD-80 series (and DC-9 before that) and I got on the L-1011 during its sunset years as it had been my goal to fly it since I was a kid. I loved that plane and am so glad I got to fly it; now after having flown nine airliner types it’s still the best of the best. Loved the sound of the RB211 during start and takeoff. Nothing else compares! Thank you, Lockheed!

Yes, I would always love to sit in first class on AA's 757's; sitting just fore the engines, you can hear that cool buzzing sound from the RB-211 on take-off and sometimes just before landing during power adjustments.

I worked for TWA back in the late 80's and early 90's. I had probably been on that exact aircraft numerous times. I always love the unique sound of the Rolls Royce "three-spool" RB 211 engines.

This reminds me of traveling with my grandma when she retired that year 1991 & we traveled with her, back in those days when flying was a luxury.. Forever the L1011. Got a little teary eyed as these days are history.. Felt like a king flying in those big ole birds. This was beautiful, so many terrific memories & going to Disney World and we flew TWA L1011 JFK - MCO in 1993. RIP granny 1935 - 2002 & the L101.

Taking video shots within the confines of a passenger seat on an airliner wasn't easy 25-30 years ago. The cameras were a bit bulky, somewhat heavy and shoulder mounted. Still, I "stuck to my guns," "to heck with the person sitting next to me" and recorded a good portion of this L-1011 flight. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your comments!

In 1986 my father & I flew one of these from Phoenix to New York. We sat at the same window position as in this vid. The sound of those RB 211s on takeoff was awesome & unforgettable. At JFK we then transferred to a 747 on the way to Paris CDG. My dad turned 80 on that flight & I had the attendants sing Happy Birthday to him. He died 3 years later & I still miss him every day

Thanks Dan Uscian priceless contribution on KZbin. Flew TWA L-1011 many times having purchased a Visit USA TWA Airpass 1983-1984 as an Australian visitor at the time to the US. Great flights with TWA all domestic with L-1011's , Boeing 747-131's and a brand new MD-80! All flights were wide bodied except the MD-80 STL to MCO. It is hard to believe that all TWA L-1011 flights I did between IND, STL,MCO,LAS,LAX back and forth multiple times etc. plus with TWA Boeing 747-131 between STL and LAX was wide bodied with full hot meal service and drinks and even some films shown! Had pre-flight seat selection choices and TWA had abreast seat allocation in numerics! TWA USA domestic was super with thanks. Miss TWA L-1011 Tristar and the Queen of the skies TWA Boeing 747-131 all USA domestic. Love the rumble sound of the RB-211 engines with the the smoke when starting up! Ansett 727:)

Hey, glad you like the video and thanks for your recollections on your flight experiences on TWA's airliners during the mid 1980's, including the L-1011. I Only flew on an L-1011 three times. All flights with TWA. Flew the L-1011 from St Louis to New York (La Guardia) business class. We made a somewhat hard landing at LGA whereby someone near my seat commented, "Wow! Carrier pilot!"

@@WAL_DC-6B Yes L-1011 was great with TWA and I was on it a lot and being on domestic USA noting cabin windows were small after flying with Air New Zealand DC-10's. I have hard to believe that US carriers have limited wide bodied domestic flights any more plus full service. No more 747's. L-1011 now extinct! Saying goodby to to Qantas Boeing 747's next year... sad. Dan you seem as an L-1011 fan and I had great many multiple flights with TWA it was a great airline with smoke RB 211 start ups! I enjoyed flying with Hughes Airwest, Republic Airlines, Pacific Western Canada, Western Airlines, anyway it is history! Ansett 727!

I was able to visit the cockpits of several airliners back in the day. Once was in 1976 on a SAHSA Lockheed L-188 Electra from New Orleans to Managua, Nicaragua. Got to sit up front for about an hour on that trip! And speaking of Republic Airlines, I don't how many times I flew on their Convair 580's in the Midwest starting with North Central Airlines all the way to their last two weeks in service in Northwest Airlines livery back in late 1988.

Back in the day when TWA, Braniff International, Eastern, Western, Pan Am and many more served the flying public. Back when flying was good all around including the food. I realized to see a classic VHS tape by the TWA Passenger. Somebody videotaped all air during evening and night time. I am glad to see the TWA Crew working in the inflight with the L-1011 Tri-Star. Can we appreciate the fact that this was a flight from Phoenix to St. Louis? I’m not one of these “everything was better!” type guys…it’s just simply not true. But dude, nowadays you’re almost invariably stuck on a 738 or (even more uninspiring) an a320 for a flight like this. My biggest domestic aviation thrill lately is flying on a 737-700 because *at least* those things have some get up and go. It’s just sad, man. Coast to coast, our skies are utterly filled with 737s, a320s and CRJs. The a321 and 739 are the worst of all. They’ve taken the place of so many awesome, unique airliners. All the trijets, 757s, a300s and a310s…dumbed down to two stretched narrow bodies. At least there are still a few 757s here and there…

The big ones, 747's and L-1011 would mostly run daytime, and they just floated down so gracefully and looked like they were barely moving. I think it's a size thing! HA! Cheers!

I remember a TWA flight from Chicago to Denver in 1977, the plane was so spacious, there was a lounge area in the front with opposing seats and even a table with some kind of pinball game, I haven’t seen any pictures showing this setup or a video, maybe someone else remembers this ?

All of my L1011 flights were on Delta. One in 1975, 1982, 1992, 1993. Of those only one was a -500 series from FRA-ATL in '82.

Why were the window shades needing to be up at takeoff/landing in the early 90's? I get now days, so FF's can see inside the cabin during an emergency, groundside. I thoughts the NTSB/FAA updated the requirements later in the years..

Oh this brings back memories - I was fortunate to have flown the L-1011 for about seven years. We actually had three ex-TWA Tristars, though ours still had the triple Delco INSs. That beautiful bird took me all over the world, amazing times! TWA was a class airline as well - they took the best care of other industry professionals when we were riding on them, it’s a travesty what that scumbag Icahn did to them.

Hi..I know this video is about the L-1011..but I like your user name. I have flown on many Western airlines DC-6's out of MSP in the 50's. I flew them to Den and Phx many times.NWA back then did not even fly to Den or Phx so it was fly Western or go to ORD and make connections. My dad worked for Northwest so we got to non-rev on Western.Also (obviously)I flew on lots of NWA DC-6s all over the place. Sad to see them go in the early 60's.Most of their routes were taken over by the Electra and yes Western did pretty much the same thing with Electra's replacing the 6 and some convair routes out of MSP. I did get to fly on the Tri-star 7 times. Three flights with TWA and 4 flights on ATA..(former Delta planes) Thanks

Unfortunately, I never got the chance to fly on a DC-6B. I was ten years old when UAL flew their last "sixes" out of nearby ORD in 1968. At least I did fly three times on the Save-A-Connie group's Lockheed Super Constellation back in the 1990s. But never an airliner like the DC-6 powered by the robust P&W R-2800 engines. By the way, I do have a nice 1/50 scale, Douglas factory, cast aluminum, travel agency model of a Western Airlines DC-6B.

TWA flew out of PHX's Terminal 2, correct? If so, I don't understand one of the arguments made in favor of T2's demise that "it couldn't handle larger planes." The L1011 is a widebody jet, and PHX doesn't handle very many widebodies these days.

My family and I were living in Phoenix in 1991. During beginning of take off you saw terminal 4, when this was filmed in March 1991, was only open for few months as it opened in November 1990. Over the years, there are so many more gates and concourses in terminal 4. The runway the plane took off on is today 25R-7L and there is a 3rd runway today at Sky Harbor.

Actually the TriStar was used by quite a few European carriers, namely British Airways, TAP, LTU and quite a few charter carriers. But it sure was more popular in the US and Canada with Eastern, Delta, TWA and Air Canada having big TriStar fleets and also Pan Am (later United), ATA, Hawaiian flying it. Gosh I miss the L1011! It was always a pleasure to fly and work on it! To me the L1011 is the most beautiful aircraft ever made!

"THE ENEMY!" - I always preferred Delta for long-distance domestic travel because they utilized the Lockheed L1011 Tristar, which in my opinion was a much more solid, smoother, and better designed aircraft than the shaky, rickety, problematic, untamed BEAST of the McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 that the likes of AA, Northwest, and United all used back in the tri-engined widebody days... M-D should've NEVER merged with Boeing! This is why there are so many problems with the Max 8 revision of the 737 nowadays... It's always been an M-D practice to "Just slap it on and see if it flies" approach to engineering, instead of spending time and money on proper "clean sheet" design and development!

Yes it was a very comon thing on the 1011's with the RB211 engines. Never effected the flights however. I worked many of flights on the 1011 during my 26 tenure at TWA, and not once was it ever an issue.

I would have walked off that plane. If you look close at the top of the engine the oily finger prints are visible. Nice aircraft when they was new. I walked off a A300b4 45yrs old and rivits are falling out with bent metel and seals corroding held together with silicone .. plus fuel leaking out of the wing then the airline says. Oh it's ok. It's only condensation. Whooooooo. Great vid anyway.👍
