Doom 2016 and Eternal made us feel what an absolute power fantasy felt like. Doom 3 made us shit our pants, surged with too much paranoia on every corner we turn. There's a reason why Doom 3 is different than all Doom games. It's coming from a perspective of just a regular marine fighting to survive through Hell and living with more than just a scratch.

The structure of the song perfectly matches the progression of the story. Both the song and the game start out pretty low key with the tension building up gradually. But then, after 45 seconds, the song picks up dramatically, which is similar to how all hell breaks loose when you find the scientist early in the game.
@NKWittmann Жыл бұрын
Yes it begins with a low tune and background creepy noise : hell is present but is mostly a rumor, a whisper, a signal. Then as the guitar comes in you get dragged in, deeper and deeper, as you realise it's all very real, and suddenly it all breaks loose. It also symbolises the progressive discovery of hell by the UAC. It feels as if you are able to isolate a remote signal, but then you lose control as it's not you coming closer to the discovery, but the anomaly that is coming for you. The main body, like the game, is pure action, highly rythmic, with the excellent work on drums expressing the rising skill of the marine fighting. The end comes as abrupt, but the creepy whisper of the dead drags out ; you're still alive, but are left scarred with the chilling implications of what you just faced. You may have won this battle, but doom, after all, is eternal...

Machine Gun in one hand, shotgun in the other, the Doom Marine walked atop of the mountain on Mars. He overlooks the barren terrain, dust sweeping everywhere. Only, the winds of dust catch on the legion of Hell, under the command of Dr. Malcolm Betruger. An Imp catches sight of the marine, and lets out a warning cry. The horde directs its attention towards the Marine, and with a commanding cry from Betruger, they charge at the Doom Marine, eager on spilling his blood. It's crazy how many parts of this song ended up in DOOM 2016 tracks. The main bit was reused for the main part of Flesh and Metal, meanwhile other parts were reused in Harbinger and Skullhacker. You know it's a timeless banger when it ends up in two of 2016's best tracks, one of those tracks being the single hardest in the game.

This sounds so grunge era....for many reasons but mostly the drums. Like something out of a highschool garage band; What a perfect era of music to experience adolescence in. Much of it sounds like tool/NIN but I also hear influences from Filter and (early) Monster Magnet as well. It's like a tribute to the 90s.

While I don't think it's as good as its legendary predecessors, this game is still quite fun to play and definitely has some spooky atmosphere. The combat, though slower, is still done well enough to make traversing the samey-looking levels worthwhile, in addition to all of the neat audio logs and info videos, which are great pieces of detail that make the Mars Base feel real. The graphics are spectacular for their time, and the enemy redesigns are pretty cool to look at. Overall, a solid entry in the Doom franchise.
@tjCooper888 жыл бұрын
True, but it's one of those things, "sequels are never as good" you know?, although Doom 2 was actually better than the original. I thought Doom 3 was incredible at the time, yes it was a bit slow, but in a good way, I loved how you could feel the bullets hitting the enemies. Though I still would like if they made the newer games have the old style of doom, you know?, the old corridors and big outdoor areas, sure they have that but artistically it's all a bit too mechanical looking in design now. Still, I think, from what I have played, Doom 4 is pretty great, I didn't think I'd like the fast paced style, but when you think about it, the originals were pretty much going for that. All Doom games are pretty spot on imo.
@Mythricia19888 жыл бұрын
+Tom Cooper Doom 3 tried to be a scary spooky horror game, which was a bit weird seeing as that was never really the point of Doom. It was somewhat saved by the fact D3 became one of the "big three" during the next-gen wars of 2004, so it was going to be hyped and successful regardless. I think the new Doom (Doom 4? "NewDoom"?) understood what Doom really was originally about, and just went back to being about murdering lots and lots and lots and *lots and lots and* _lots_ of demons. And finding key cards....
@tjCooper888 жыл бұрын
Mythricia I agree but I think whilst doom 3 was different, it was the right time for a game like that and it was still very a good scary game. I guess even the originals were pretty scary in parts, especially when you're a little kid. I am enjoying Doom (4) though, I like the whole keycard thing too. it does feel like the originals but I kinda wish they'd have made the maps look more like the old games, they still look very Doom 3, mind you, i'm sure that would have been quite hard to do considering the graphics/artwork etc. I haven't played much of Doom (4) yet so I don't know what all the levels look like yet. what was the other big 3? I presume Half-Life 2, but can't think of the other.
@Mythricia19888 жыл бұрын
Tom Cooper Half-Life 2 and Far Cry - ironically Far Cry came out first despite being sort of an unknown game for a while... I guess Medal of Honor also took part in that generation race towards the end. Heh, was a fun time to be an enthusiast! Anyway, yeah I guess it's one of those things where it can't please everybody - D3 split the community a bit I think, what Doom was supposed to be like. I think it's important to keep developing new ideas though, and NewDoom is different from the old ones - because, it's new! 15 years from now, someone will talk about NewDoom with nostalgia too. If we just keep replicating games from 1995 I think we would all get bored. Nostaliga is powerful like that. Many new gamers would not be impressed by a real Doom-lookalike - and they're not wrong to feel that way. I might enjoy Doom 2, but that's partially due to the memories associated with it, and because it takes me back to a previous time that I enjoyed. But if someone doesn't have that connection - and many don't - all it is, is an old and kind of crap game. And again - they're not really wrong!
@tjCooper888 жыл бұрын
Mythricia ah yes of course how could I forget Farcry, I loved gaming back then. I agree but I didn't mean for it to look exactly like Doom 1/2 just not so Doom 3 like, because it is very similar in the way it looks. Obviously I didn't mean replicate the whole look of the first two games, or feel. Just the levels are very similar (to Doom3) so far, not that it's bad, just like you said, but it is important to develop something new, the gameplay is a lot faster I guess so, yeah.
