you lot are SO critical! why is it so unbelievable that man can send something to another planet? and what's the problem if a picture is in black and white? the thing is on mars!!!! taking pictures!! 100 years ago, people never even dreamed things like this would be happening! surely that's a big enough achievement!! and those who don't like the fact that money is spent on space travel, well there are always going to be those that don't agree with it, but there must be a HUGE amount that are behind the exploration (like me!) and think its a worthwhile investment, all of this is amazing! well done NASA!

Well done indeed. There are so many things we still don't know about our own solar system, yet some of us are convinced that it's a more worthwhile investment to shower so called "celebrities" with fame and admiration.

thank you. :) What I was getting at is this.. If we invested our money that currently is spent on things like another way overpriced toilet seat for the white house, or if Lady Gaga agreed to donate half of her next five paychecks to Nasa, the things we could do for space exploration.. The current mega millions indiana lottery jackpot is 400,000,000 dollars.. Bill Gates probably looks at that the way we view a quartet under our driver's seat in our car. We have the means, its just in the wrong hands.

+Morg Mordcam It is all we want to see,but sadly every evidence we are presented points to a faked footage,shot in a desert in the US.All this small black and white photos and bright glowing atmosphere doesn't point to anything but Earth's landscape and a simple trick to cover the colors is to present it as black and white.That's not even 'Fisheye' lol,it is called wide angle lens-what else to say.Does this look like to you like 12 months or more like 12 hours.Let's face the facts.If this was in court Nasa would lose.

Curiosity does have a color camera, and many of the images it takes are in full color. They look great. But scientists like to use b/w cameras because they provide better science. You can put different filters in front of the camera to reveal different wavelengths of light.

@baja150st The rover runs on nuclear power. There are two older rovers on mars as well that run on solar power, that works very well since there's no atmosphere on mars to reflect the light, but the scientists still chose to go with nuclear power for various reasons.

The technology and camera on Curiosity was tested and approved in 2003. To change and test the lenses and circuitry would be too time consuming and costly. The camera used to take the pictures is only 2MP, however it manages to produce very high MP images by using an optical zoom and taking lots and lots of pictures which are later stitched together.,

When you go to college you can either study something like Business, Law,etc... Something that will actually help you or you can be a history or psych major and flow through college without any contribution to your future or to society. Same thing with this, NASA can either research something useful, (I'm not NASA I don't know what that would be) or they can keep taking pictures of samples a robot is collecting from Mars. Which by the way, are samples we've already collected...

@emanresu1933 These images are from the Haz Cam of the rover, it only has black and white images because that's all it needs to distinguish rocks and other hazards (why its called haz cam). There are colored high res cameras as well that take pictures of the experiments and other close ups. Unfortunately the first priority of the rover is not to take stunning pictures, so these pictures will have to do.

These images are from the forward Hazard Avoidance Cameras. They are engineering cameras designed to aid the rover drivers with navigation. For this purpose they do not need to be in color, as transmitting color images from the surface of another world is quite bandwidth heavy. There are many other cameras on the rover that can shoot in color though.
@DOCWHOK9
@DOCWHOK9 10 жыл бұрын
Bandwidth ? Heavy ? ...from the NASA website... "The data rate direct-to-Earth varies from about 12,000 bits per second to 3,500 bits per second (roughly a third as fast as a standard home modem). The data rate to the orbiters is a constant 128,000 bits per second (4 times faster than a home modem). An orbiter passes over the rover and is in the vicinity of the sky to communicate with the rovers for about eight minutes at a time, per sol. In that time, about 60 megabits of data (about 1/100 of a CD) can be transmitted to an orbiter. That same 60 megabits would take between 1.5 and 5 hours to transmit direct to Earth. The rovers can only transmit direct-to-Earth for at most three hours a day due to power and thermal limitations, even though Earth may be in view much longer." If NASA sent 1 Decent photo and explored 1 Anomaly, we'd have answers. Curiosity should have been name IGNORANCE o DECEIT..
