This is an excellent series. No matter some minor technical/historical inaccuracies, it's impressive how compelling the writing and character development are, especially given that this was a mid-60s network show

I agree it was very well acted. When it was on Network TV once a week, none my family, some in WWII army air force, did not see the flaws -- even during the summer "re-run" period, when you could see an episode 2 or 3 times.

well a metal finish P 47 Thunderbolt manages to shoot at Gallagher in almost every episode. A 3 gun array unique in its look. I watched the 1949 film version with Gregory Peck... and damn, that 47 clip was in the original. I built over 100 model WWII aircraft .. so it gets a bit detailed and tactile.

The ratings were adequate, but it was an expensive show to produce, and when they went to color in season 3 they had to hand color every frame of the historic combat footage, which eventually made the cost of production prohibitive. That is what finally ended it. If they had had modern CGI and computer graphics available it would have been cheap to make.

I realize many people like this ending thinking the enemy is evil, but I wish they had gone another way. Still the message that this guy worked 10X harder to NOT kill feels like it is lost at the end. When he finally has to kill (personally I feel no killing is justified but in the case of self defense it can be unavoidable, sadly, and forgivable) they seem to not accept it but leave other to interpret it as “he saw the light”. He actually saw the darkness. If this episode made you think and end up unsure it was fantastic but if it just solidified in your head that there is clear cut good and evil, well then… god help you.

Obviously not, as a B17 would be totally unsuited, and NEVER tasked, to this kind of work. They must be C47 transports (aka DC3 Dakotas) which look totally different. But by the magic of Hollywood, they have grown two extra engines, gun turrets etc, so that they now look like B17s ;)

I find it interesting that no black actor appeared in any episode thru the first 2 1/2 years. I believe I saw a quick glance of a black flyer for the very first time in the previous episode, and now this one has 4 African Americans - Ossie Davis and his helper, and two pilots.Is it possible that they did not want to risk black actors until they knew they were going off the air? Surely there were plenty of blacks on TV by then.
@lsmart
@lsmart 4 жыл бұрын
@Maria Kelly Yeah, I'm aware of that, and I guess it's a good enough reason to avoid any blacks in the show. Still, since there were 150,000 blacks in England by 1943, you would think that you'd see a single black show up somewhere, say in a London bar scene, or in the way it was used here. I also don't recall a single obviously Hispanic airman in any episode, even though there were close to a half million Hispanic Americans in the armed forces in WWII.

Why would you say this, how about all those shitty Irish Pilots And Horrible Italian infantry. The Germans at the time are noted racists “remember that holocaust thing” so nothing they said in that documentary is trustworthy yet I don’t mean to antagonize you but maybe look in the mirror, the Tuskegee were American airmen, period the fact that they were separated is a sad part of history but just that, History. Also if there is a shred of truth to the documentary, did they bring up who the best army air core pilots trained? I am guessing the best trained the main core of new pilots so who was left to train Tuskegee? Not an excuse just looking at the whole picture.
