@Its_the_sun17 күн бұрын
@alanjane4605 2 January 2025, 14:37 GMT Updated 5 hours ago Twenty councillors have quit Labour in protest at the party's direction under Sir Keir Starmer. The councillors - from Broxtowe Borough Council in Nottinghamshire - claimed the party had "abandoned traditional Labour values" and criticised policies such as cutting the winter fuel allowance for some pensioners. Council leader Milan Radulovic, who had been a party member for 42 years, is among those walking away from Labour. A local Labour spokesperson said the decision by some councillors to sit as independent 18 months after they were elected was "incredibly disappointing". The councillors said they would establish a new independent party, planning to run the borough council as a minority administration in the short-term, but may need support from existing independents in order to keep control. They claimed 10 of them had been blocked from standing for Labour at upcoming local elections for Nottinghamshire County Council after questioning the winter fuel policy.

@@shaunofthedead6389 I thought that at the start, but I've since read about these resignations in an online Nottingham newspaper and it would seem that the councillors have been in disagreement with Starmer for months. They were the only Labour-held council to take a piublic stand against the withdrawal of the WFA. If they had been quiet up until now and were just getting the jitters as Starmer's and Labour's popularity plunges, then I'd say that their resignations are a bit suspect, but it does seem as if they've been on the case more or less since August.

Nottingham central council is a joke, they are constantly 'diverting' money away from the surrounding towns and villages just so they can 'beautify' the city center... But the money always gets spent on student stuff (as we are a university city), and 'minority issues' (whatever that's supposed to mean), and their new ticket is all the 'migrants' that's filling up our hotels and hostels, and only roughly around 20% are actually 'legal migrants'... Meanwhile, us residents get shafted with ever increasing rents and council taxes, whilst our services are cut to the bone, hell, even our waiting lists for social housing stands at around 15-20 years... This labour council has run my city for around 50 years straight, and the only trajectory it has gone in, is down.....

Starmer seems unable to learn from his mistakes. Every "difficult" decision get him into deeper shite. Has he never heard of the term.....when in a hole stop digging. The man is a joke and the world is laughing at him.

I'm not a Labour supporter but I applaud the decision by these 20 councillors to make a stand. I trust that more Labour councillors will follow the bravery of these men and women in upholding their political principles
