ok, so i saw a comment about this song being about tyler thinking that suicide is the only way "this line's the only way" and he's in a line with other people that think that too, but then he remembers someone close to him and he hears "a voice inside my head that says follow me instead" and that's the person convincing him to keep going, so he gets out of line and follows them instead, but then i realized that right before he hears the voice, he says "i see a spaceship in the sky" and y'know how josh always wears that shirt that says "i want to believe" with a ufo on it? it's kinda like josh helped him thru suicidal thoughts, and he kept going for josh. I know that's not it bc josh wasn't even in tge band, but i sure would like to believe it, its just so nice, and it makes me so happy im gonna go with that.

Lily W that fits. I think it's about social anxiety. Social norms that outcasts worry about and maybe don't want to take part in, but the fear of being different makes him fall in line, only to be pulled out of line by a higher power.

I think this song is about how he's suicidal and marching to his death with like minded people chanting "this line's the only way" because when people try to commit suicide it's because they can't deal with life anymore and they think that death is the only solution. The voice inside Tyler's head is the part of him that still wants to live, possibly for a friend or someone else close to him. He gets out of the line because he realizes that person is worth living for.

Hey, if someone is judging you and being downright rude about your taste in music, try to actually be thankful about it. They took time out of their day to think about you, and though it may be negative, those people, instead of doing something else more (or less),productive, they decided to fill it with thoughts about you! Aww, how sweet. Haha. For a few good comebacks, you could tell them, "My taste in music is your face," or, "You're the judge," or some other mildly entertaining TØP references that will confuse them. It's pretty good entertainment. Stay alive, fren. |-/ ♡

[Verse 1] G C There's miles of land in front of us. Em And we're dying with every step we take. D We're dying with every breath we make. G And I'll fall in line. C The stranger's back is all I see. Em He's only a few feet in front of me. D And I'll look left and right sometimes, G But I'll fall in line. C No one looks up anymore, Em Cause you might get a rain drop in your eye. D And heaven forbid they see you cry, G As we fall in line. C And about this time of every year, Em The line will go to the ocean pier D And walk right off into the sea. G And then we fall asleep. [Instrumental] G C Em D G C Em D G C Em D [Verse 2] G C And as we near the end of land, Em And our ocean graves are just beyond the sand. D G I ask myself the question, "Why... I fall in line?" C Then out of the corner of my eye, Em I see a spaceship in the sky D and hear a voice inside my head. C G D "Follow me instead." C G D "Follow me instead." C G D "Follow me." C G D "Follow me." [Instrumental] G C Em D [Verse 3] G C Then the wages of war will start Em Inside my head with my counterparts. D And the emotionless marchers will chant the phrase, G "This line's the only way." C And then I start down the sand. Em My eyes are focused on the end of land. D But again the voice inside my head says, C G D "Follow me instead." C G D "Follow me instead." C G D "Follow me." C G D "Follow me instead." C G D "Follow me instead." C G D "Follow me instead." C G D "Follow me instead." C G D "Follow me instead." [Verse 4] G C Take me up, Seal the door. Em I don't wanna march here anymore. D I realize that this line is dead. G So I'll follow you instead. C So then you put me back in my place, Em So I might start another day. D And once again I will be, G In a march to the sea. (Hold G)

I suffer from depression, I don't want anyone to know and I was listening to music in the car and my dad wanted me to show him, I showed him this song and he said he really liked it, but he doesn't really think about the meaning of songs so I don't know of he gets it. I just don't want to tell anyone and have people start treating me differently and asking me question, but I think at least I can share this one song. some of the others I think he might kinda get like friend please and he might hear the tune and get it like a car, a torch, a death, but I don't want anyone to know so those are my songs and I don't want to show any of my family/ friends. I just want those songs to be there as an escape for me. Thanks for reading frens |-/

Okay, so here are my thoughts on the meaning of this song. At the beginning when Tyler says, "There's miles of land in front of us, and we're dying with every step we take. We're dying with every breath we make." I think he means that no matter what you do, you're going to end up dead. You could die from an accident or of old age, but it doesn't matter You'll end up dead. When he mentions falling in line, he means that he was put into a line for death. He also says the words, "I'll look left and right sometimes, but I'll fall in line, which goes back to how I said that no matter what we do, death greets us in the end. He mentions of a man being a few feet in front of him, possibly meaning that the man is a bit older than him by maybe even a couple hours, so he would be in front of him in the line. When he says, "About this time of every year, the line will go to the ocean pier, and walk right off into the sea. And then we fall asleep." He means that every year when people die, they're supposedly sent to hell. He later says the line, "I hear a voice inside my head, follow me instead." He might mean that God is telling him to get out of the line. It tells him this so that he doesn't get sent to hell with the rest of humanity. Some evidence to support this claim is when he says, "Then the wages of war will start, inside my head with my counterparts. And the emotionless marchers will chant the phrase, 'this line's the only way.'" he's saying that there's a part of him telling him to die with the rest. These emotionless marchers are a bit like the bad parts of his mind who want him in hell. He then says, "And then I start down the stand, my eyes are focused on the land." Which is him debating to get back into the line because of the bad voices, until another voice says 'follow me instead'. His last phrase is, "Take me up, seal the door. I don't want to march here anymore. I realize that this line is dead, so I'll follow you instead. And then you put me back in my place, so I might start another day. And once again, I will be in a march to the sea." This last line means that once he's realized that everyone around him is hoping for a better afterlife, only to be sent to Hell, he doesn't want to be a part of that. So he asks God (the voice) that he wants to go to Heaven, because he doesn't want to die. God does so, and keeps him in Heaven for awhile. Afterwards, after the man sees that everyone around him has died ("I realize that this line is dead"), he decides to stay with God for a longer time. It is then cut to the aftermath of humanity, after nobody but this man is left. God sends him back down to earth, so that he could live his life freely once again. The man then states that in time, once humanity is blooming again, he will return to the line on his march to the sea. *This is just my perspective, but I'd love some criticism. I really think Tyler got into this song, and it has an extremely deep meaning if you think about it. This one will always be one of my favorites.*

I understand that the song is probably religiously oriented, however I see this in a completely different light that honestly hits home for me. When it says that *"There's miles of land in front of us, and we're dying with every step we take."* I see that as how everyday for a depressed or suicidal person is painful for them and all they see is a bleak future. "Falling in line" seems like the only way to get through these bleak and painful days, on the road to "the sea", or suicide. *"I'll look left and right sometimes,"* I think that means that the person will look at other options, such as medical help or counseling, but overall, they just "fall in line" feeling that it's hopeless. *"No one looks up anymore, cause you might get a raindrop in your eye, and god forbid they see you cry."* The person is feeling that there isn't any solutions to their problems, and so they hide their feelings because they know that crying won't help them, even if that's all they want to do. *"About this time of every year, the line will go to the ocean pier, and walk right off into the sea, and then we fall asleep."* Walking off the pier is obviously suicide, and falling asleep is dying. *"And our ocean graves are just beyond the sand, I ask myself the question, why I fall in line."* As this person is about to commit suicide, they hesitate and ask themselves if there really isn't any other solution to their problems instead of suicide. *"And out of the corner of my eye, I see a spaceship in the sky."* I see this as sort of a last hope that the person is just being able to catch a fleeting glimpse of. *"And hear a voice inside my head, saying, follow me instead."* This is the last hope that the person holds on to, the one that helps this person hesitate, and gives a last chance. *"And then the wages of war will start, inside my head with my counterparts"* This is the fight, possibly the last decision that the person will make, of whether or not to kill themselves. *"And the emotionless marchers will chant the phrase, this line's the only way."* I see this as the depression trying to take away that hope of ever getting better or feeling okay, or having a future. *"And then I start down the sand, my eyes are focused on the end of land"* The depression is winning, and it feels like it's the end, and you're raising the gun to your head. *"But again the voice inside my head, says follow me instead."* It's the last fleeting glimpse of hope, screaming at you to stop what you're doing, that there's another way. *"Take me up, seal the door, I don't want to march here anymore"* It's like a begging for someone to help, because really, you don't want to die, you just want to feel okay again. *"I realize that this line is dead, so I'll follow you instead."* You decide that you won't do it today, that you'll brave another, and try and hold on to that last tiny shred of hope. *"So then you put me back in my place, so I might start another day, and once again I will be, on a march to the sea."* That small hope isn't going to last you forever, so eventually you'll find yourself in that place again. Thank you if you've made it this far. This is just my opinion, or at least what the song means to me. I'm not saying anyone's opinion of what the song means is right or wrong, I just wanted to share this with all you people. Thank you again.

This song could be interpreted many ways, you see that's this band does, they make songs that can be tooken so many different way based on life experience or emotions, I think of it as, society in a way *theres miles of land infront of us were dying with every step we take were dying with every breath we make but I'll fall in line* I think of at as oh we're wasting our precious time, not doing anything, but doing what everyone else is instead of trying to follow your dreams or change anything, *a strangers back is all I see* so your kind of like the other person infront of you, your blinded by them which they are blinded by someone, everyone in the line is blinded by society and going the way everyone else is in fear of not being accepted, or scared to step out of their comfort zone *and about this time of every year the line will make a march down to the ocean peer and walk right off into the sea and we fall asleep* that could mean once that generation of people just following the line, and then the line dies, or the line, aka life which is lead by media, society, etc.is kind of leading people in s certain route that can kill them, and since you can't see that all see is the person infront you, you will eventually without knowing it walk off and die along with society, and knowing you didn't make a change. *is see a spaceship flying by* that could represent your realization and kind of taking you out of this trance and once your out of that the voice in the back of your head says * follow me instead* which is the part of you who had this dream and your just leading the life everyone else has, and you never did anything to change the world at all and that's saying "oh hey, come and persue your dream" and when you follow the voice and at the end it says *i don't wanna March here anymore* it's like that realization that you have to do something, and get out there, and persue your dream and not lead the life everyone else has, and now when it says *i might come back another day* or something like that, it's like you do it your out there perusing your dream but then there's another generation leading the life you once did, and as you grow old, retire, etc. your kind of brought back into this void of, media, and everything because you gave in, and stopped once you retired or something, you just said "this is it I did my dream, but what now?" This happens with celebrities and lets say football players, they did their term, now what? Lets say in the military, you served your time, now you do what? Happens with vets quite often, they be heroic, then they end up on the streets relying on media to have a bit of hope. So your saying you MIGHT march there another day, unless you don't give up no matter what age, condition, etc. oh and also for *heaven forbid they see you cry* usually in social media and stuff, you have to put on this fake face, for everyone, because when you cry, and give in, your weak, and you'll get hate or like straight up Pitty. Now I interpret it in this way because I'm not kidding one of my biggest fears, is to die knowing I did nothing to help anyone, and live this life just like everyone else did, and I don't want that, I personally want to be a writer, I mean, I could pass messages and hope to other through enjoyment and creativity. Not just updating a status but to get the message through to follow your dreams, because when a kardashian for instance says, "oh ya like follow your dreams or whatever" they don't mean it whatsoever and it doesn't impact them. It's just, that's how I interpret it because of my own fear and dreams, it just I know deep meaning but that's my opinion

i think this song is about people marching to their death, just living for living, and then the spaceship comes, that person, that thing, that activity, that thought, that suicidal thought, that happy thought, that one thing that makes up your personality, your memories, thoughts that moment that feels like forever and you don't want to end it but want to end it so badly sometimes, that feeling you get when you live for something else rather than just surviving that moment and then it ends and we all die the same in the end

This song is actually about spiritually dead people. We all walk on this line and think this is the only way of living. We live for ourselves and our own desires. We are never satisfied. The spaceship is God who says "follow me instead" I will show you true joy and give you LIFE. Tyler becomes spiritually awakened and can live his live with freedom and joy in knowing Christ. It's sad though because now that he's awake he watches everyone aimlessly walking on the line- thinking that's the only way. He realizes that they are spiritually dead. Praise God Tyler is awake and has faith in Christ

I don't know what this song is really about, and the Christianity thing seems very likely, but I like to think of it as finding purpose. Sometimes I start to feel really hopeless and numb and sad, so I put my head in my hands, listen to this song and pretend that nothing else exists for a moment. The line of people represents everybody in the world, to me, and we're all slowly marching into the sea, just getting closer to death. And nobody ever dares to look up or to the sides, nobody dares do anything different, we all just stay in line. But he hears a voice in his head, one that says "you don't have to do this. You don't have to stay in line." But that's just what I like to imagine.

Guys, I can't begin to explain how fabulous it is to watch you 2 getting to know my most precious music. You're not just sitting there, nodding along and repeatedly saying "dope' or 'fire'!! That's what I found from most other reactors. It's the reason I only watch you guys now!! So....March to the sea! This song, written by a teenager struggling with his mental health and his faith. Yet... This song has pulled me back from the edge on many many occasions. I'm a grown ass adult, I didn't feel it was acceptable for me to get to a certain age, kids in collage, nasty divorce at 25 years of marriage. When I thought I'd reached my end and couldn't even force my feet to keep moving forward. In comes this song. Those lyrics, that pain, that HOPE. From a kid??? Tyler is simply a genius, to take his pain and faith and work it out through music & lyrics. Kyle, thanks for being so damn genuine. I love watching knowing you guys get it too. FABULOUS! Oh, and Happy New Year boys xxxx

For some reason, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve listened to a full twenty one pilots song. Tonight, at like 11 something on a school night, I was having a bad time. Couldn’t stop crying, couldn’t stop thinking, and so I came here. The comfort these guys can give in a few minutes is phenomenal, and astounds me every single time. I don’t know where I’d be without them. Stay alive, everyone. For yourselves.

I relate to this song so much. ".. why I fall in line." We are all victims of submitting to the popular thing. That's what I've even doing for years, following everyone living a blank life. "Wages of war will start" maybe you want to branch of from that march to the sea. But we all know the consequences you have to pay in order to do what makes you happy. "Follow me instead." That part of your soul that knows you're truly better off doing and being what makes you happy is grasping on to the part of your brain you have left. "I don't want to march here anymore." I want to stop and block my demons out. I don't want to ignorantly continue to converge to societies' expectations. But when you feel alone that seems like the only way to stay safe. "I realize this march is dead." To me this means Tyler realizes this whole following one another trying so hard or be alike is old and expected. Nothin about it is fun, being ourselves is what life's about. We're just too scared to take that risk. "I will be in a march to the sea." This part really sticks out, we will try to do what is best for us, which is doing what makes us happy, but with peer social pressure, it's so difficult to continue doing that, so we fall in line and start the full circle of trying to be who we need.

I honestly think he is talking about how society tells you to do certain things that aren't necessarily right, saying how everyone follows and does things that shouldn't be, and when he says he hears a voice saying to step out he means I guess God telling him to follow His way, and then he decides to follow His way :)

This song is so meaningful, it can mean different things to different people thats what i love about music. To me this song is about suicide. "Marching to the sea" is like killing yourself. And then he heres a voice( probably god) saying follow me instead. He thinks that " this lines the only way" like death is the only way to escape. Until he gets that voice in his head telling him theres another way and to follow it instead. The end is my favorite part because he steps out of line and the voices puts him back in place so he can live to see another day and continue his march to the sea. Like to continue his life until the day comes when he just dies of natural causes or something like that. T.o.p just have so much deeper meaning in their songs it makes my heart so heavy. There actually is beautiful music out here in the world.

This is my absolute favorite song that Twenty One Pilots has ever made because to me this song is about religion and how he's just following a line of people and he doesn't really know where he's going, but then the voice who says "follow me instead" is Jesus calling out to Tyler and trying to save him from where he's leaded (Hell) and so Tyler is in crossroads and unsure of where to go hence the lyrics " And then the wages of war will start in my head and my counterpart", but then the voice gets stronger and Tyler begins to see where the path is taking him so he quickly decides he wants to change his direction in life and follow christ with the lyrics "I realise that this line is dead" in the bible it says that everything in this world is already dead since it has no eternal life and so Tyler finally makes his decision and tells Jesus "I'll follow you instead" and it makes me so emotional lmaooo

+Insa Eggebrecht That part was intersting for me I thought maybe it meant that he would go back to how he was in the beginning and Jesus would have to set him on the right path again so it's like an endless cycle which is realistic considering most followers of Christ sometimes get lost and wander off the path of righteousness but eventually God calls out to them again.

Kianna Flores Thank you for answering. That could be possible. And I guess it's something that I like about the song, it doesn't say that everything is easy as long as you know Jesus. At the moment I feel so far away from god, all the other voices around just seem to be so much louder. And this song has so many different meanings that it is pretty confusing!

My theory of this song is that the sea represents the end of life and the line is the humans. We all are so alike and not many dare to be different. And Tyler wants to be different, to not only going through life with the basic stuff, kindergarden school jobs getting old and die. "No one looks up anymore cuz you might get a raindrop in your eye and heaven forbid they see you cry, and we'll fall in line." We don't dare to do something different in the fear of getting judged by others so we'll just march through life like any other etc. We are told our whole life to be like everyone else so "This lines the only way" is like represening that. I think u got my point by now? |-/

This is EXACTLY how I interpret and what this song Means to me. I found this song after going thru a divorce and had to refund my way in life and I felt the typical steps we are ALL suppose to take didn’t seem right for me. I listened to this song consistently and it helped me so much still does. I’m still on that path btw and not sure it’s right but it’s different that’s for sure :-) anyways great to hear another take away the same meaning

I believe the 'line' he's talking about was life. Just us, living our life. But many people struggled in life, they wanted to end the struggle (ofc by ending their life once and for all). Tyler also thought why did he live in the first place, and he can see himself wanting to end the line. Tyler is so depressed that he didn't find any more good in life. But a spaceship, God, told tyler to follow Him. Have God in your head and in your heart. But Tyler's evil part told him not to follow God, and instead to live your life like the way it is (Stressed and depressed). This made Tyler to doubt God. What if the spaceship just wanted to worsen my already bad life? But God keep on going for Tyler. Tyler then practically gave up and hope that God could take him immediately to somewhere safe and without any danger. But God said 'Nope son. Not today. I have given life to you and everyone I loved. And I love everyone. This life is precious, and through me you can make use of your life. You can become an inspiration for everyone else, love other people like I love you. Through me, you will conquer those awful thoughts, and make life wonderful.' God is saying that life is actually wonderful, it's beautiful. God has given Tyler a chance, a mission. So God put tyler back into the line. The line IS life. The sea here is death. But death doesn't necessarily mean suicide right? Death is part of our life cycle. You can't avoid death. So the sea will always come every year to different person. However, a suicidal person would see the 'sea' much earlier than those who isn't suicidal. The misinterpretation here is that most people think that the 'line' is the line of suicide. But it's life. If you listened to their other song 'Not Today'. That song's pretty similar to this one.

holy shit, revelation, so in Addict With A Pen he mentions water and how he needs it and a common thing that he uses metaphorically is sleep, so I think Water is like cleansing and forgiveness and basically God because they have a lot of Christian themes in their songs and so sleeping is like giving up or dying or like the lack of thought that comes with sleep. So in Kitchen Sick (and this is not to belittle the meaning of kitchen sink because that meaning is far more important than this silly little conspiracy) what he's saying is that a kitchen sick to him is something that flows forgiveness and love and and easy life generally, so find what makes your life happy and full of love and such. Here he says that when they march into the the water they all fall asleep, which is also what Car Radio is kind of about, how sometimes you have to think about your problems instead of taking the easy route and just drowning the in music (entering the water and falling asleep) and other such things and that we can either choose to be awake and aware of out problems or live in fear of these thoughts and or when they march into the sea they're dying and they fall asleep because they're entering Heaven, where there's endless forgiveness so they can give up. So this song is about how we never do anything in life except wait to die and look at other people but never up and maybe it's God calling but on another note maybe they're marching to recovery and to being safe and the voice calling it relapse and that's why at the end he get's put right back in line or the water was a normal life with forgiveness and where you're not expected to think and he doesn't want to be led to that as so many people eventually do so he's facing this battle of weather or not to be normal but slowly but surely they're all heading toward normality and falling in line and going to their therapy and taking their medications to fix their thinking or maybe the actual meaning is super evident and I'm over analyzing idk

I didn't realize until today what "march to the sea". It isn't just referring to suicide. Its talking about the march that William T. Sherman led to the sea during the civil war. It was a destructive march. Every where they march destruction and death followed. I think that this song is comparing that to suicide. When you decide to take your own life, it don't just effect you. It effects everyone around you. That is just what I got out of the song. |-/ Stay Alive

meaning: we're all marching to destruction and death (the sea) and we refuse to look for hope. he looks up and sees Christ who is the only way and not just for salvation from death, but to an eternity of hope and joy that follows. He says follow me instead. why are we so willing to follow the masses who chant there is no other option?

+Rory Nolan everyone is welcome to their own interpretation, and I'd agree that a lot of TØP songs are vague in their meaning. This one, however, is distinctly Christian in theme and considering Tyler's background, you'd have to do some mental gymnastics to place a different faith in there and have the context work with Tyler's upbringing. Of course you can take it to mean whatever you want, but the original message of "follow me" and the faith-based salvation depicted in the song fits Tyler's origins in Protestantism to a tee.

I'm listening to top with a broken heart couldn't stop thinking about the girl that I fell in love with unexpectedly and all of a sudden this song comes on and reminds me that God is with me. Reminds me that God has always been with me and he has been waiting patiently for me. Now my heart doesn't ache so much. Now I know to follow God and in doing so my heart in time will heal. I know that God will protect the girl I love and make her happy. I know God will someday bring me to the girl that is meant for me and who knows it may very well be the girl I love now with all my heart.

We both have severe anxiety, so we held each other's hands before we had to go, but we got an A. My brother sang "follow me instead" at the end. We're threaten and fourteen, from different mothers. Couldn't have asked for a better brother, because he understands me. This is what brings us together. This song.
