I think this video is one of the most realistic depictions of what it feels like to grow up raising yourself emotionally. You become your own role model and guide. You have to learn how to raise a kid and be the kid at the same time.

When his mom passes away, his way of coping is to imagine he has a brother. This imagination is his way of getting through tragedy. He needed his brother by his side, his brother was his courage. When people go through tragedy, sometimes they feel helpless and need someone else to help them through. He didn't have anyone, so he imagined he did. When the jocks start beating up his brother, he has to decide whether to fight or let his courage die. He fights, and his brother disappears. He no longer needs his imaginary brother to be his courage, because he found his own.

My big brother Bruno fought brain cancer for 16 years. He loved this band n was so happy he got to see them live, always wore their shirt. He had numerous seizures over the years which took mobile function of his legs 2 years ago. 2 weeks ago another one that left him unable to use his arms, eat or speak. The day before he passed at 48yrs old, I played this song and cuddled with him. His eyes couldn’t focus on me, but he managed one time to sing along “stay with me” in a high head voice. Those 3 notes will stay with me forever and I’m super grateful I played this song for him.

Tamara strictly my opinion but the brother I believe is just a figment of his imagination as a way to cope with the death of his mother (the one in the bed) I believe the main character’s imaginary brother is representation of the kind of person the main character may want to be. It’s honestly very fight club-esque as far as the two stars go.

It seems to me that the relationship of the two brothers can also mean the relationship of people with music. Some people don't feel lonely because of the music that gives them a reason to live and disturbs their terrible thoughts. I feel much stronger mentally and more confident when listening to music. But in reality (like the MV ending) I find myself alone in silence.

@@andersonorme2026 ok so the kid went through the loss of his mom as a kid and along with that the bond with his dad wasn't the same anymore. When kids have traumatic experiences they will create imaginary friends and that's what he did. His imaginary brother was the only one there for him as the years went on. At the end you see he didn't really get into conflicts with other people, but when the boy felt like his brother was threatened (which is also him) he protected his "brother" and then we see that it was the boy all along. So thats my view on it

I wrote this because in my country this song is not on the radio, which really upsets me. When Stressed out came out, it almost immediately appeared on radio and occupied the first lines in the charts, it was awesome. 4 months have passed since the release of this video, but it is still not included on any radio in my country. I think this is unfair, because the songs from new album are amazing and as good as the songs from Blurryface. This song is especially beautiful and it had a lot of potential to become a new hit, but for some strange reason it did not happen
@hollykibbins9966 жыл бұрын
My interpretation is that the boy creates an imaginary brother as a way to cope with the pain of losing his mother and seeing his father descend into alcoholism (hence the clip with him doing homework and his dad drinking). The imaginary brother is his source of strength and courage and challenges him to put himself out there because he is actually fairly shy. The fake brother is his protector and guidance and he relies on him in order to be able to do things that he’s scared to do. When the fake brother disappears after he beats up the football players, I think that was showing that he realized that he has strength within himself to overcome the challenges in his life and he no longer needs the fake/imaginary brother to help him. That was just my interpretation though so let me know what you guys think.

I don't think it's an "imaginary brother" kind of thing. Imho the video is showing how the boy has to hold his piece togheter for his entire life. The bold brother represent his will to keep going through life,that spur his other side of his personality,which is represented by the scared,shy boy. His personality in this video is described as splitted in two parts: one(the shy brother) that is the personality that he would have had if things in his life weren't messed up(his mother,his father..),and the other one that shows how he had to find the strength to survive in such a nightmare, making him a very unstable person(breaking mailboxes,picking up fights with everyone,etc). (sorry if I messed up some sentences,english isn't my first language)

This video is completely different than any other music video they've released and in doing so opened themselves up to a completely new way of producing art. Its such a beautiful way of looking at the song too- while some argue that 'My blood' was the perspective of Tyler's brother, this video allows us to see it as how personas can become part of a person to cope. Fight Club. Well, okay, it's not the SAME storyline... but the trauma-induced "identical friend/imaginary brother" people are referring to is another personality, because we see that our protagonist has been physically acting as this second person, they reveal at the end that he was breaking the mailboxes, he chased off the bullies. He may have projected this boy into his vision, but it was an extension of himself, always. That's a second personality, just as it was depicted in Fight Club! :)

There are few points in time where I feel moved enough by a fictional character's struggles to a point where I wish I could change things for them. The storytelling in this is beautiful, beyond beautiful. Could you imagine being *that* alone in the world? Alright, my theory is that in this story, the brother symbolises BlurryFace. And I know that sounds absurd but hear me out: with lyrics in this song, there's things like "when everyone you thought you knew deserts your fight" and "when there comes a day, people posted out at the end of your driveway", like, what would make someone believe that everyone is going to desert them or that the world is going to turn against them? I think a recurring theme in Trench is that BlurryFace has a light: its not real but people think it is. Its an illusion. The bishops tell everyone that they are the light, all the while they're oppressing people and controlling them. And to refer back to this video, I think it gives to context to Tyler and his relationship with BlurryFace. As in, they've been with each other for years and the case could be made that Blurry made Tyler who he is today: without Blurryface, he wouldn't have written their last album. It's like Blurryface is telling Tyler that he needs him, that he is nothing without him. But he clearly is a negative influence: turning to alcohol to deal with emotions, isolating himself from other people (friends or family), taking him places where people don't like him or want to hurt him. But he still goes back to Blurryface in the end, even though he has every reason not to. After all, Blurryface was there when he lost someone very dear to him and no one else was. Blurrface/fear taught him many things about life. "Stay with me my blood' could be an appeal to the fact that Blurry has "grown with you" or is has been with tyler so much he's like family. Also, other things that got my attention is the lyric "you're staring down a dark hall" when in Vessel, theres a line "I can hear them coming down the hall". And in Blurryface the album, whenever Blurry would speak, it would be Tyler voice pitched down 2 octaves. If you listen in the chorus of My Blood, there's that pitched down vocal, hiding behind the falsetto. Could BlurryFace still be coming for Tyler, but is hiding under something; using a different voice? I think this song is really rich with symbolism and references to other TOP songs, but I don't think it's a happy song. I think it's a image of the harsh reality, Blurryface didn't go away, he just took another face. At least now, Tyler doesn't see himself as Blurry anymore; it's now personified through the Bishops, people who he can rebel against and resist. Because with twenty one pilots, no matter how dark it gets, there's always hope.
