LYRICS
What's my problem?
Well, I want you to follow me down to the bottom,
Underneath the insane asylum,
Keep your wits about you while you got ‘em,
‘Cause your wits are first to go while you're problem-solving.
And my problem?
We glorify those even more when they..
My opinion, our culture can treat a loss,
Like it’s a win and right before we turn on them,
We give them the highest of praise,
And hang their banner from a ceiling,
Communicating, further engraving,
An earlier grave is an optional way.
No.
Neon gravestones try to call for my bones.
What's my problem?
Don't get it twisted.
It's with the people we praise who may have assisted,
I could use the streams and extra conversations,
I could give up, and boost up my reputation,
I could go out with a bang, they would know my name,
They would host and post a celebration.
My opinion will not be lenient,
My opinion, it's real convenient,
Our words are loud, but now I'm talking action,
We don't get enough love? Well, they get a fraction.
They say "How could he go if he's got everything?"
I'll mourn for a kid, but won't cry for a king.
Promise me this,
If I lose to myself,
You won’t mourn a day,
And you'll move onto someone else.
But they won’t get them. No they won’t get them.
Don’t get me wrong, the rise in awareness,
Is beating a stigma that no longer scares us,
But for sake of discussion, in spirit of fairness,
Could we give this some room for a new point of view?
And could it be true that some could be tempted,
To use this mistake as a form of aggression,
A form of succession, a form of a weapon,
Thinking “I’ll teach them,” well, I’m refusing the lesson,
It won’t resonate in our minds.
I’m not disrespecting what was left behind,
Just pleading that it does not get glorified,
Maybe we swap out what it is that we hold so high.
Find your grandparents or someone of age,
Pay some respects for the path that they paved,
To life they were dedicated.
Now that should be celebrated.

It also finds a second meaning in that our culture glorifies young artists that die. IE, Mac Miller, xxtentacion, lil peep. The list goes on and on. So many of my friends love these guys just because they died. Don’t get me wrong there is a lot to love there, but Tyler is saying don’t love them simply because they died.

Growing up, Linkin Park was one of the first bands I became a fan of. There were even times when I would listen to nothing but LP. During the pandemic, I truly became a fan of Soundgarden as well, whose lead singer was the guy that Chester looked up to, Chris Cornell. And to think that almost 8 years after becoming a fan of Linkin Park, I’m here listening to twenty one pilots, who is pretty much the forefront of a newer generation of musicians who have the same messages that LP AND Soundgarden had. Sometimes, things come full circle, huh🥲 RIP Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell🙏🏼

That touched me in such a way. I have no grandparents left. My grandmother died this summer and she was such a good example of someone who thrived even in the hardest of times (she lived the spanish civil war as a kid on the loser band, the republicans... she cared for all her brothers and her parents when they were really old). She was such a strong and wise woman... She was there when I was depressed too, always motivating and caring for my well being.I really miss her. (Sorry for my english, guys!)

The ending is so POWERFUL and I applaud Tyler for making this statement! The shows like 13 reasons why and other forms of “raising awareness for suicide” isn’t equating to prevention of it. It always paints this picture that the people around you didn’t try hard enough to save you so you should use suicide as a weapon against them. It’s toxic and it’s not helping in a society where we joke about wanting to die 24/7. Instead of glorifying death we need to put the focus back on how beautiful and worth it is to stay alive. |-/

You could interpretate the same message into "13 reasons why" though. Yes, it shows a person using suicide as a weapon but that person isnt the main character. The show mainly revolves around Clay dealing with the suicide->getting hit by that weapon.

The last verse is probably the most important; it is talking about how so many TOP fans glorify Josh and Tyler and not the lyrics/message: "maybe we swap out what it is that we hold so high" It is not about Tyler or Josh being gods of a culture, it's about living above the culture and bettering ourselves. The boys are just human like us; they never wanted to be worshiped and it's about time that we started taking their real message to heart... love yourself, not us.

The song is not about the anger he feels for people who think suicide is a way out. It’s about the anger he feels towards people who “glorify” suicide rather than celebrate what’s still with us. Hence the last bit where he talks about finding your grandparents and paying “respects for the path that they made”. He feels people should praise the people who have stuck with us, rather than those who have lost the tragic battle against suicide.

"Neon gravestones try to call for my bones." Tyler is describing the gravestone being covered in neon lights, fame, publicity, from the grave. Some people become more famous and are better remembered after they die, and people are almost always glorified after suicide. Tyler is saying not to let this be. Life should be more celebrated, glorified, and remembered. "I could give up," he could give up the fight. "and boost my reputation," think about how much publicity and fame it would bring. "I could go out with a bang, they would know my name" he would be remembered for a long time because of it. This song well puts a lot of what I think about. I'm not suicidal, but I've always thought it strange when people talk about it with glorification and talk about the person so highly while they never did while they were still alive. Let's celebrate life instead, speak of each other highly now, and realize we're flawed, but we can improve.

Musically kids need it too. Didn't u ever sing in the mirror as a kid? That's all their doing. But they can share it. Doesn't make it less meaningful and beautiful to them. My mom went all in on my Daughter and Musically until I reminded her that her and her father lip synced and sung in the mirror (I don't think together. I think she got caught doing it. Was embarrassed and Grandpa said "I used to sing in the mirror too" to make her feel better) needless to say, once looked at like that mom stopped being a jurk. It's the same expression and emotion involved in the music, along with narcissism, (lol) it's just expressed on a slightly different platform. If we didn't have mirrors or Camera phones kids would sing along to music while looking in puddles or lakes.

Tyler and Josh are one of the few genuine people in the music industry who didn't sell their values for fame and money. They believe in something bigger and they do everything to share it with us. I don't want any stupid hate going towards them anymore cause the only reason they're here is for us and for the lives they save every day. They truly deserve to be appreciated and this message deserves to be spread. Twenty one pilots doesn't glorify mental illnesses. Twenty one pilots is just two guys trying to save lost kids who are going through darkest times and find peace with their music. Please spread this song as much as you can!! When I was around your age, I never thought I could make it to 23. I was convinced I'd end my life by then because I was so miserable and in so much pain, the thought of living much longer with it seemed exhausting and impossible. I'm 32 now. I have two kids who are my everything. I have a husband who is also my best friend. I thank God every single day that I didn't give into that fear. I won't lie and say my life is completely better; I still have plenty of pain. But I now see the other side of it, I've gained perspective, and have reasons to be grateful to be alive. Life is a series of ups and downs. The ups make me so glad to be here still, and during the downs, hold on to those ups until the next one comes. I promise you; it will come.

@@carpenoctem796 sorry im so late oof but I believe Tyler is saying that people ignore depression and other mental health issues when they see famous or well off people commiting suicide because they think these well off people _should_ be happy. So they see it as an extreme measure for attention. An example of this thinking would be a person saying, "Why would a king commit suicide, he has power, money, and fame. He just got attention hungry there's no way he could be depressed, but I understand why this young boy would commit, he has stress from school and maybe trouble making friends, he has a reason to be truly depressed."

At first we thought it was about Jenna, moving on if Tyler were to pass away. Then we said, what if he’s asking Josh to continue Twenty One Pilots? Then we thought... what if he’s asking *us*? That if Tyler were to die, he doesn’t want us to be depressed about it and hurt ourselves. He doesn’t want us to mourn him, he wants to be, in a sense, celebrated for the path he paved for us? Just food for thought :))

I think the first part is exactly right, but I would like to shed some light on the final lines. He says “find your grandparents or someone of age” then he says “to life they were dedicated, now that should be celebrated.” Tyler wants us to celebrate the elderly, and any other people that are still alive after struggling with depression. They dedicated themselves to life... they overcame their struggles and that should be celebrated.

It's sad that, out of the whole manifest against glorification of suicide and, by extension, depression that this song represents, people are focused on the "promise me this..." bridge, that is the only part vaguely sad/emo/suicidal. Yeah I know it's strong and deep, but in a song about not romantizing mental illnesses there's a lot of better lines to pick than the single part that kinda indulges it. For example, the final poetry/spoken word verse, that's actually powerful, gives us a lesson and has those optimistic final lines that are simply beautiful.
@alzbetaborkova1311

I think those lines perfectly fit the theme of the song. Maybe he's just saying that if I give up I don't deserve your mourning so don't do that. That sounds cruel but he tries to make people stay alive. I'm not saying that people who just pick those lines understand this.

I wanted to visit this song again to relive some memories I’ve been repressing. I remember listening to this song before my Suicide attempt back in October. I had been put on medication in august. The year before was the worst year of my life and I was still recovering. I just couldn’t do it anymore. That’s what I remember thinking. I wasn’t exactly stable on medication yet and I think that’s what made me go haywire. I took a handful of melatonin and wrote a Suicide note. I luckily survived, but I know some may not have been so lucky. This experience has put Suicide in a new light for me. I no longer see it as a solution, rather something that should never be considered. I never want anyone to make my same mistake. Remember to stay alive. ||-//

I hope he’s ok man. I’ve been paying attention to he’s obsession with feeling about the world the same way I do. It’s hard to explain but that’s what I get out of this new album. Hi Tyler and Josh, I know you probably will not see this comment but on the off chance that you stumble across it, I would like to thank you for everything that you both have done. I think I am speaking for everyone when I say that you both have sincerely changed my life. I don’t think I have ever felt this connected to someone through music until I listened to you two. Sometimes it’s scary to me how much we think alike. There have been some dark times in my life that I don’t think I would have gotten out of if you two weren’t here. I’m starting to ramble so I’m going to stop now but the last thing I would like to say is just know that we are all extremely grateful to have twenty one pilots in our lives. ||-// 🤘🏼

You know I’ve always thought Tyler was just preaching his past thoughts on depression and that he’s okay now. But going through such a thing and listening to all the lyrics they’ve wrote.. the sad truth is it never truly goes away. Instead you learn to live with it. And we are witnesses to their choice of living in their songs. And as they sing, countless lives are being saved. I’m so blessed to be listening to their story.

This is so heavy but so important and just really great. How he’s pointing out how awful it is that we go so far in celebrating the loss of someone who took their own life when we should be putting all that effort into keeping them going. If we put more emphasis on life and growing old then it might help show people that growing up is good. Growing old is what you should aim for. Because I’m sure a lot of people who struggle think about how much more recognized they might be if they were gone (not saying that’s why they do it, just that it doesn’t help at all). Tyler always writes stuff that makes me sit and think for hours just to see all the points I can pull out of the songs. I love this

I've struggled with suicidal thoughts for a while now, and there's something that always bounces around in my head, a voice encouraging me to just end it already. "There is only redemption in death." Because of exactly what this song talks about. How every single death is romanticized like crazy. And someone is only forgiven of their sins and looked upon with boundless love and admiration after they're already gone. But Tyler basically took that mentality and flipped it right on its head. And I love him for that. Because, before now, I never realized how fucked up that really is.

“Promise me this, if I lose to myself, you won’t mourn a day and you’ll move onto someone else” this line was always hard for me to hear because of the way it was “twisted” in my mind for a while it was associated with someone who told me that all the time. It always meant to ignore the person and pretend they never were even here. When I was finally able to listen to this song all the way through, I realized what he meant. There’s a mic drop at the end of this song every time I listen to it.

Austin Reeves hmmm I disagree. Famous people get worldwide coverage, a kid would only hit the local news. People are still mourning Chester Bennington. @@worrywirt i agree, but the lyrics were " how could he go if he's got everything. I'll mourn for a kid but wont cry for a king." When celebrities commit suicide, a lot of people do have that mentality. That stigma that since they're so rich and famous, they must be happy. They should have no reason to be sad. Therefore the act of suicide gets over-looked and thought os an act of publicity or selfishness But if a kid or regular person commits suicide, it is not thought of as such
