From an experienced mechanic/fabricator, and shop owner, I hope what I'm going to suggest will make at least some sense. You've got the perfect conditions to do a lot of preventative things. Chevy oil pumps aren't famous for maintaining proper pressure, by the means they utilize gears to pump the oil. Replacing that, along with the timing set, are solidly good practice. As for his birthday gift list, a set of aluminum heads, a roller cam, roller rockers, and some dress up items would be really nice for him. If someone wouldve given me those kinds of things, I'd have been beside myself. Yes, he's got to learn to drive responsibly. That goes back on your shoulders my friend. He's at least a respectful kid so you've done that right. A set of long tubes going out thru 3" pipe into some flow master's. That would sound crazy good. I'm a Ford guy, so me suggesting these are an honest list of what the car could be. I'd check which gears are in the diff too while I'm looking around. Again, it's all suggestion. But, as they say, practice makes perfect.

We're be replacing the timing chain at a minimum I think. Likely I'll replace the oil pump while in there too. As for his birthday gifts, I'd love to go with aluminum heads, roller cam, rockers, and lifters but that's just a touch pricey ;)

Agreed, Russ.

I don't know if you realize, but you're missing the speedo gear bracket and bolt that holds the speedo gear and housing in the transmission. The speedo cable unscrews from the gear housing and leaves the housing in the transmission. The bracket is U shaped and slides into the speedo gear housing, then a bolt goes through the bracket and holds the gear housing, (sometimes called a bullet) to the transmission. Something minor, but if that slides out while you're driving, you'll have a mess and you could break the speedo gear in the transmission.

Good eye. I had already removed it and forgot to mention it. It was there.

I always enjoy watching your videos. What you are tackling is not an easy process to begin with. Lots of things to check and double check. Throw teaching a son into the mix ( Declan you are doing great by the way) and having to set up cameras adds to the learning curve. These videos will be a valuable tool for future car enthusists. Keep doing what youre doing the way you are doing it I started out pumping gas which gave me a real solid experience learning about different makes and models of cars and trucks. I moved into mechanics from there. One of the first challenges I set for myself was to be able to look at a bolt or nut and to know what size it was so I didnt have to make several trips back and forth. Back then it was just SAE but now we use both SAE and Metric that always makes it interesting

Just a few observations . . . 1.) Always undo the negative cable on the battery, first. If your wrench touches the car while on the negative cable nothing happens. If the wrench touches the car while on the positive cable, and the negative is still attached to the battery, you'll get a huge spark show and/or a really hot wrench. If your wrench touches the car after the negative cable is disconnected, no spark show. No hot wrench. 2.) The coolant goes into the radiator at the top and flows through to the bottom. Opposite of what you explained. But it's ok. A lot of people think it works the way you explained it. 3.) A better way to explain a torque converter is two box fans facing each other, under water. The fluid basically flows from one fan and spins the other from the force imposed by the water. The "higher" the stall speed just means the first fan, pushing the water, has to spin faster in order to get the second fan spinning. Otherwise, unless you're a true transmission guy that's all you need to understand. Great episode! I'm anxious to see more. 👍

Right on both of those first two! I didn't even realize I switched them around until you said this! And your explanation of a torque converter is great! Thanks!

On the engine hoist, you don’t need to jack it up when it’s all the way down you just take the end where the chain is and you push it up and it will hold wherever you stop pushing up

Up on the hoist arm I hope you get what I’m talking about

I didn't know that, either. Been doing this for years and never even tried it. If it wasn't 10*F outside right now (near Chicago) I'd go try it. 👍

Not-so-sure about the title: you guys did quite well and in winter too. I agree with Russ Murphy, a high volume heavy duty oil pump from Summit Racing will do wonders. And please check the gaskets too, just in case...if one fails they are a pain in the wallet to fix with the engine back in the engine bay.
