The Twilight Zone has existed in many lands in many times. It has its roots in history, in something that happened long, long ago and got told about and handed down from one generation of folk to the other. In the telling the story gets added to and embroidered on, so that what might have happened in the time of the Druids is told as if it took place yesterday in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Such stories are best told by an elderly grandfather on a cold winter's night by the fireside in the southern hills of the Twilight Zone. - Rod Serling

The moral of this story is that sometimes the person we love just can't or won't love us in return so we have two options. We can either accept that it's a love that will never be and try to find a better love in someone else or we can let that unrequited love become an obsession that consumes everything and every part of us. Even our souls.

This is one of my absolute favorite episodes of The Twilight Zone. Because it was an hour-episode, it wasn't shown as often as the 30-minute episodes. I finally got to record it on ME TV this week and I was able to watch it after all these years. Anne Francis, Jeanette Nolan and Virginia Gregg were all excellent in this tragic but fascinating story.

I felt so bad for Jessbelle on this one. The guy loved her and gave her all these promises and through no fault of her own, he fell in love with the preacher's beautiful daughter and left Jessbelle. And it's such a small town, I assume, and so Jess had to deal with it even more. What she did was bad, but I couldn't help but feel sorry for her.
@curtisdalrymple427 жыл бұрын
Me too throughout the whole story she was made out to be the bad girl and the villian,but he was just as guilty if not even more so than her because he left her for another girl,and led her on. Of course,what she did was bad,but how many girls have stooped to levels they never dreamed they would because they were in love with some guy,and at least she felt bad about what she did. He never once felt sorry for her, and in the end when she died he acted like he was glad about it the girl he was once going to marry. He was a total jerk in my opinion. By the way,Jessbelle was much prettier than the preachers daughter.

As much as Jess-Belle was wrong in wanting Billy to love her even if it meant using a spell (messing with his free will), I feel sorry for her. Yes, maybe if the bargain hadn't ended up so badly for *her* (losing her soul and becoming a leopard at night), she wouldn't have regretted it, but it's hard to not sympathize with her pain as I watch the episode. Yes, Jess-Belle is not a poor little innocent, but I don't think we can call her a complete villain either.

Oi boa noite.

This was definitely an actresses' story. Jeanette Nolan (Granny Hart), Virginia Gregg (Ossie Stone, Jess-Belle's mother), and Anne Francis (Jess-Belle) unequivocally walked off with the acting honors in this episode. I found it VERY hard to believe that two lovely women would go over the moon for James Best. Best was a good enough actor, but being a romantic figure requires certain qualities that one either has or doesn't. (Brian Aherne from "The Trouble With Templeton" couldn't have played Billy-Ben -- he was much too old, and no one would have believed him as a farmer from the Blue Ridge Mountains -- but I had no trouble believing that he could have gained the love of a beautiful and compassionate woman.)
@rondelby24822 жыл бұрын
The greasy hair of him was a turn off yuck
@tadimaggio2 жыл бұрын
@@rondelby2482 I suspect that Rod Serling intended that as a realistic element -- men in that period often used hair products that produced that greasy effect. As a man, I agree with you that it's not very attractive; but I would imagine that the number of possible husbands in a mountainous rural region like the one in which "Jess-Belle" is set didn't leave young women like Jess-Belle or Ellwyn with many options.
@cityman23124 жыл бұрын
That guy playing Billy Ben is not good looking or charismatic enough to make two ladies openly smitten (or have an old witch coming onto him towards the end and cutting him favourable deals with no hidden clauses).
