Anne was indeed a great actress. During her later years, my husband became a regular email corresponder with her. He worked in the film industry in the 1970s, so they had a lot to chat about. She sent us a personally autographed photo. She was very down to earth, quite a friendly woman. She was struggling with lung disease from smoking, just as Frank and Dino, and so many other actors of her era had in their later life. Unlike many stars, Anne ran her own little website. If you wrote to her, it was really her that replied. She was a highly capable performer, and left behind a huge range of work, from Honey West, to the young woman born on Altair, to the desert dweller of Black Rock, she gave us dynamic and vibrant portrayals... Sincerely missed by her fans, may her Spirit rest in peace.

Her show " Honey West," was what got me into martial arts. That show introduced me to the world of martial arts. It preceded " The Green Hornet " therefore is was Anne Francis not Bruce Lee who was the reason I earned a Master's Degree in Kung Fu.

Ann Francis recounted in an interview about her work on this episode that unlike any other television series she ever worked on that unique to just this series alone there at MGM the entire cast and crew rehearsed the entire episode day after day for an entire week before any filming of any sort whatsoever at all began, so as she put it everyone knew their part and everyone else’s cold like a well old machine. I found that quite fascinating. Ann was really impressed with that fact about how the Twilight Zone was produced.

One of the best episodes, in my opinion. The twist is so clever and so unexpected. When I first watched as a kid, I took it for what it was, and it was quite creepy. But watching as an adult, I think there are meanings that go deeper than just the face value of the story. And, until now, I had no clue that it was a mannequin and not Anne Francis! Wow! What I'd give to have that mannequin they made of her! It's got to still be around, somewhere. Remember the time machine used in Rod Taylor's "The Time Machine"? Someone actually found it in a junk shop, in pieces. Then he bought it, and spent thousands restoring it to its former glory, where it is now touring the country to be enjoyed all over again.

This is one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes. It used to scare me to death as a kid. I always thought store mannequins were creepy. Anne Francis is one of my favorite actresses, too. I agree that she is wonderful in this particular episode. Watching as an adult, I really like the story even more as I see the metaphors and deep meanings.

Ann Francis, loved her in the classic Sc-iFi 1956 probably my top 10 popular movies 'Forbidden Planet. This movie obviously influenced Star Trek 10 years later. Thank you Rick. I knew those were real manikins at the end. You just confirmed. My favorite show is season 2 "The Obsolete Man" because it accurately predicts the society we live in today.

Anne Francis was a friend of mine, and I got to accompany her to a tribute in her honor in Hollywood in the late nineties. The group showed Forbidden Planet and this episode to the audience, and it was quite surreal to sit next to her as we watched this. It was the show that made me a fan when I was a kid when it was first shown. She was quite proud of it and I agree that it contains one of the best performances of her entire career.

My mom, uncle, and I are absolutely TZ fanatics; we all discovered it by watching the reruns. Anne Francis was also in my very favorite episode, 'Jess Belle'. My uncle still sneaks up behind me at the store where I work and whispers, "Who do you think you're fooling, Marsha?" thanks to this episode. It's never been one of my favorites, but I never thought it was creepy.

I used to have the whole DVD set of these classic Twilight Zones and yes, this was one of my favorites and I agree, one of the more creepy shows of the series. Very eerie. They definitely set a mood and it worked. Really enjoyable and interesting to see how much work went into this and yes, actual people when in 'mannequin mode' wouldn't have worked near as well. Her best film was the 1956 Forbidden planet where she played the daughter Alaira Morbius! She was a beauty but the real stealer of the movie was Robby the Robot and the very space-age flying saucer. I saw the movie on t.v. when I was 11 in the early 1960s! Still watch it every time I can.

It is amazing that the directors and the cast and crew were able to make such great episodes without CGI or anything like that. Part of the reason why the Twilight Zone episodes are so good is because they are filmed So well.

It is one of my favorite episodes. It's noteworthy how they gave the actresses high collars or strategically placed necklaces so that when the mannequin head was attached the seam would be hidden. The mannequin for Anne's character would have been absolutely perfect if the eyes hadn't been painted slightly cockeyed.

i love the episode, and every new years, im lucky enough to catch it on the scifi channel. I cant explain my attraction to many of the episodes, such as this one, but to me, its engaging from end to end. After dozens of viewings, i'm still happy with the plot twist, and, (maybe ive just realized my attraction) Rod's closing commentary. He does lead us into, another dimension. I saw this episode when it was first telecast. I was just a little boy back then, still a couple years away before JFK would be assassinated in Dallas. That's how long ago it was. To say the least, this episode was very frightening to a young boy in kindergarten. It remains one of my top episodes today.

It was a higher class store and this episode managed to really give a department store feeling as they were back then. To me, it is creepy how well they did this. I ended up working in that department store and after closing hours with the lights off it was like this. Brings back so much.

I saw this episode when it was originally aired, and it DID make a big impression on me! Remember that then we got to see a show once on broadcast TV. There was no KZbin or Netflix to see in again and again, freeze the frame, and so on. That it was so memorable demonstrates that it was one of the top Twilight Zone episodes.

...this episode story stayed w/me as a kid in that if you mentioned Twilight Zone, this "department store" story would come to mind. I never understood the "gold thimble" bit....like in 1960, who and why does anyone buy a thimble, and what did that have to do w/the storyline. Agreed on Anne's reputation in the industry. Underrated, as she definitely had a distinctive personal style. Fortunately she made some good film/TV choices that will have her work noticed for eternity.

This was the first Twilight Zone episode I ever watched when I was a kid - 40 years ago. It scared me so much, I turned off the TV and didn't finish the episode. The episode ran again several months later (this is before I had a VCR) and I got up the courage to watch it in it's entirety. The Twilight Zone remains one of my favorite shows of all time!

Now years later...when I watch this episode, it really is one of the best ones in the series. My favorite is the one with Burgess Meredith... This is probably my favorite TZ episode. I first saw it as a teen and it really made an impact. For a long time I thought it was some kind of fever dream because no one else I knew had ever seen this episode. (This was pre-internet and/or IMDB) It's such a simple story and no "monsters" or bad guys, just a good mystery/thriller.

Every year the SyFy channel plays all of the Twilight Zone episodes on New Years Eve/Day and my boyfriend and I always watch them. This has always been an all time favorite of mine. Not only for the intriguing storyline and the unexpected twist. But also for the amazing performance of Anne Francis and the rest of the cast too. They made an already interesting episode, come to life (pun indented, LoL). I have to agree with you that when Marcia is walking silently through the empty store, and all you can hear are her footsteps and the whisperings of the mannequins was chilling. Watching as she felt her sanity leaving her and then watching as she slowly started to remember her reality. The range of expression she transitioned through from feelings of relief that it all made sense to her and that she wasn't losing her mind. As well as sadness that her turn to live among real people had come to and end. I cannot imagine any other actress of the time performing it more perfectly and convincingly than Anne Francis did. Coincidentally, this year while watching the episode, I wondered if the mannequins were actually mannequins, the actors/actresses themselves in still photos, or something else altogether. When I saw this video pop up on my KZbin Feed, I immediately clicked on it to watch it eager to see what you had to say about it. Props to the artists and everyone else responsible for making The Twilight Zone for all the work they put into this episode (and others too) who are the reason it is regarded as one of the best episodes of the entire series. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this episode. It was enlightening for sure.

I spent 20 years in the Motion Picture Industry and whenever I see this episode and Annie slips into that mannequin stance, it sends chills up my spine. I know it's fake. One of my top five favorites of this show. Rod Serling was brilliant. The top two above this one would have to be "Nothing in the Dark" with Robert Redford and "Time Enough at Last" with Burgess Meredith. The quality of the acting, the story telling and pace were just so perfect and Twilight Zone pushed boundaries that so many shows, even today, can't come near. Thank you for this, it's great to hear some behind the scenes things and yes, Anne Francis made this episode perfect.

My two favorites were a Stop at Willoughby. Also Gig Young in Walking Distance. Both fantasies that were momentarily true.

This is my all time favorite episode. It was on in reruns all the time when I was a kid and it scared me to death!

I saw this episode in the 1960s, when I was a kid; it was shown at night and when Marsha was alone with the dummies I used to believe they were going to force her to be trapped in the dummy forever!

In the pre-VCR/DVD/internet days, when you actually had to wait for a channel to play the show you want to view, this was the episode I could never manage to see. I specifically remember one night, when TZ was playing weeknights at 11pm (I think) on WPIX out of NYC, the TV Guide showed that the episode would be airing. Of course, the channel also carried the NY Yankee games - they were playing that night and the game went on for so long that TZ was cancelled for that night. It took me years more to finally see it.

One of my Most Favorites❤️, I loved Anne Francis and the way it was directed at the end by Rod Serling when the male mannequin asked very innocently Was It Fun? And She replies Ever So Fun. They stop animating and the scene is ever so Sincere. Of course James Millhollan gave it a happy light heart ending with his expressions!

Rick, that was an really informative analysis of this incredibly brilliant episode. Serling was a genuis! Ann Francis, wow! What a perfomance by this incrediblly beautiful and talented actress, who really knew her kraft. Also, kudos to the fine cast and to the set directors who help make this episode what it is.

Anne Francis was a superb actress, and should be remembered for be the star of the tv series “Honey West,” where she played a private detective. Her Twilight Zone episode was very creepy and executed perfectly. Rod Serling was a genius!

It's one of the best episodes. Anne Francis also played a nurse that was killed off on an episode of Columbo. She is always great.

First. You're one of the best on YT. I'm so glad I'm subscribed with notifications. Second. By all means, keep The Twilight Zone episodes coming. Third. Anne Francis was a stunning young lady, and wonderful actress. I suppose I was aware they were mannequins, but damn, what a job on them, before CGI. Amazing. One reason I'm so very impressed with your channel, is of course the great content, extensive research, and spot on narration. These are the reasons why I totally dig your channel ! Very well done featurette, thank you. My thoughts having just rewatched this episode (and already knowing the spoiler) is how wonderful Miss Francis's acting is, of course, equaled by her amazing beauty. I was focused on the execution of this episode and appreciative of all the artistry involved. I had met the film editor, legendary Bill Mosher, so all his work on this series, his having edited so many of the first season classics, always adds to my enjoyment.
