Twin 1979 Honda Prelude Barn Find Acquisition and First Starts - Broken Gear

Not one, but TWO Barn find 1979 Honda Preludes acquired by the guys over at Broken Gear. Dubbed "Lude 1" and "Lude 2", These evil twins aren't something you see every day. One sat for 2-3 years, and the other sat for over 25 years, enjoy as the guys assess their situation and breath life back into these automotive relics. What will we do next with the Twin Preludes? Your guess is as good as ours!

I am a fan of the older Honda body styles like this. My parents had an 82 Civic 4 door. The squared body is a classic.

I have 2 Preludes, one the same color as yours and the other burgundy, both in advanced state of abandon, but this week got one of them starting after who knows hom many years (more than 15), and it runs great after a new dizzy and some other stuff were installed. Now doing brakes and clutch hydraullics. I have bought ALL of the old parts stock from the dealer years ago and now picking shinny new pieces from my storage and installing them in the grey car, it is really satisfying!

That's awesome! Wish we had some NOS parts to work with. We have a pile of parts from Rock Auto sitting in the barn next to these cars that we just haven't had time to put on. I think we've got everything but new rear brake drums. Going to have to make the ones on the car currently work!

@@brokengear2476 Yeah, i spent the last 2 decades purchasing all the needed parts (A bit crazy i know!). Don't worry about the drums, with a resurface and new shoes that will brake just great, don't forget the flexible brake lines, they tend to expand causing spongy pedal feeling!

@@brokengear2476 I'm glad you decided to fix stuff instead of destroying stuff. This way is far more practical, and ethical. You should cycle the fuel pump several times (about 2 seconds each time you turn on the ignition, times about 5) in order to fill the whole system especially the float bowl.

@@brokengear2476 The brake reservoir cap should not need to seal for the brakes to work. This car looks like a good candidate for spray wax on the underside, from a self serve car wash, and silicone tire shine on what's left of the exhaust.

@@brokengear2476 If both these Preludes run, but need $500 in parts, maybe you should get a 3rd parts Prelude, or just skimp on parts a bit more. Also, It was never clear if that rod knock completely went away, but if not, go under and see if it's easy to take out the oil pan, because if it is, then it might be easy to rotate in a new rod bearing(s).

Had one of these late 80's in the uk. Was so rotten I was driving along in the rain with the wipers on and suddenly the arms got out of sync with each other. Suddenly realised the wipers spindle had collapsed into the bulkhead as the scuttle around it had rotted away... Mechanically great would run on 2 star fuel also (low octane) 5 speed with electric sunroof fantastic..

Love these preludes... the rust on your manual is exactly what it would have looked like on early 81 if it had lived here eastern Canada. If that car where here now it would not be a car anymore unless it was stored in a garage that was climate controlled and it had never seen the road salt or moist salty air.

I had a similar Prelude. My brother sold it to me in 1991 for $500 bucks, I was 15. Really fun car on a windy road but horrible on the highway. 3 barrel carburetor, why would they do that?My friends would make fun of it because it was horribly slow. But, when I took it down the few country roads I used to drive it was like a Go-cart, the sunroof made it feel like a convertible. Good memories, may she rest in peace.

Intermittent wipers Rear demisters Full cloth trim Matching door card color Comprehensive warning lights color coded door cards Waay ahead of the times. Bonus: Hood Vents!

Yep, all of the mentioned extras came standard with this car except for Auto. Dual Carb in this case is just a triple barrel carburettor for the CVCC system).
