Back in the early 80s, i drove truck for a while, out of the three different ones i drove, they all had the Detroit 8v71in them, i just loved the sound of them, until i drove it all day, then all i could here in my head at night was that Detroit screaming in my head its been many years sense i drove those old Detroit, i really miss them.

Scott did great things here. Methodical when analyzing the engines - before touching them. The best thing about getting the port engine running is that it was the one considered damaaged. Just the injector.

Ahh, a mid to late 80's Ocean. The Bayliner of big boats. Having been a marine diesel tech since the late 80's I can tell you there are tons of boats that age rotting away in marinas all over. The maintenance to keep one of those seaworthy is astounding. From it's looks, that boat has been neglected a loooong time. Bet the "fuel" in those steel tanks is black sludge. The cooling system on those J&T's is likely full of barnacles, and lord knows how many bolts will possibly snap off in the process trying to get them apart! Back then, you had so many distributors and dealers taking a Detroit industrial engine and marinizing it to their own package. Thus there are parts unique to the marinization that may or may no longer be available! I know you had Stewart and Stevenson, Johnson and Towers, United Engines and who knows who else was doing their own unique mods. So thirty some years later there are boats out there that have parts and let's say changes made to blower drives etc that no body knows about. And now the boats, once shiny prize possessions of well off folk, are in the hands of folks who really don't have the money to make them run right, and are too cheap to pay somebody with the knowledge to actually make the thing right! That boat is kind of like buying a 1987 Ferrari... needs lots of love and lots of money and the skills very few have.

A boat is what a 6 71 was designed to be in. Bring them up to rpm and leave them. Ever seen the power heads they use on work barges? An outboard motor with a 6 71. A guy who worked for Valley Detroit in Fresno CA. Had most of the 1937 engineering notes and drawings from the Louisiana testing. He was also one of the trainers when I took a 650 Allison rebuild class in 1985.

Great stuff .. I don’t own a bus, diesel or a boat, but, karma will call at some point .. (like the vice grips on the fuel rack .. and checking for seized injectors) .. in my travels, one day I’ll be tasked with working on an old diesel. I’m an advanced DIY mechanic, fly turbine powered model jets .. this is also right up my alley.

The first Detroit I ever heard or seen was a brand new Fleetstar 2000 with a 671 my second cousin bought after he got out of the army back in the early 60's. He hauled grain to the twin cities and now he owns a trucking company and about thirty trucks and many different trailers. I thought that 671 was the cats meow.

Great video as usual, toward the end though there was no water flow which could mean blocked heat exchangers, destroyed impellers, rusted sea pump if it has a steel impeller or closed sea chest.
@BusGreaseMonkey5 жыл бұрын
One step at a time. Yes that’s all probably crap. A diver inspected the bottom and confirmed nothing is blocked. Impellers are rubber. She has new ones and the heat exchangers need to most likely be pulled apart and cleaned at the least. Let’s just say she didn’t want to put new tires And rims on the boat before we knew the engines were in working order. We won’t run it long enough to heat anything up. Baby steps.
@blampa5 жыл бұрын
Bus Grease Monkey thanks for your reply which makes perfect sense. You sir are the Detroit whisperer, I just love how you coaxed both of those engines back to life. We just serviced an 88 foot Pershing with twin V16 quad turbo engines. 102 litres of low SAPS oil in each - all pumped in by hand in 20 litre drums due to EPA regulations. Stick with buses; boats hurt the body too much.
@cobrasvt3475 жыл бұрын
They sound perfect. What beasts of a engine. Wonder how much horsepower those injectors that are in them are allowing it to produce. The M's are 450, do you think someone has changed them out from what came in them and it's just a mis lable or what do u think?

Cautionary note! ULSD is less slippery than the diesel fuel of old. Add TCW3 two stroke oil or biodiesel at 1% ratio to the fuel to improve lubricity. Your high pressure pump will thank you.
@Romans--bo7br5 жыл бұрын
Wallace G...... That's bad advice for these engines. They need to use FPPF Lubricity with fuel power in their fuel tank(s), was created specifically for marine use, as originally formulated. As far as.. "Your high pressure pump will thank you." goes, there is NO "high pressure fuel pump" on these (or Any 2 cycle GM/Detroit Diesel) engines.... all pressurization of the fuel takes place in the unit injectors, only.
@wallacegrommet93435 жыл бұрын
Never heard of FPPF. What is it? Both of the additives I mentioned reduced the wear scar on the HFRR test substantially, surpassing the EPA diesel fuel standard. Most diesel in the Pacific Northwest already contains biodiesel at a very low percentage as a lubricity additive.

Do you ever use a bore scope to look at the inside of the cylinders before turning them over? I've heard of people being concerned about rust or dirt damaging the bore, piston, or rings in an engine that has not been run in a long time. Your thoughts?

There was no indication of rust inside the engines. Both had oil in the head valley. If Scott had any concerns he would have looked inside. I have a bore scope to use.
