Twin Falls, Idaho | Shoshone Falls | Snake River

Today we visit, Twin Falls Idaho, Shoshone Falls, Snake River and Minidoka Internment Camp near Jerome, Idaho. Perrine Bridge is a great place to see the site of the Evel Knievel Snake River Canyon jump. The Snake River Canyon is much bigger in person than you imagine from pictures. Evel Knievel jumps are famous but so are Evel Knievel crashes, which is what happened at the Snake River Canyon jump. The Snake River jump (Evel Knievel) was something Rob and I both watched as kids. We also took a tour of the Minidoka Internment Camp near Jerome, Idaho. This was one of the Japanese Internment Camps. The Japanese Internment during WWII is something not many know about or think about.

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Idaho and that you took the effort and time to get off the freeway. Crossing the Perrine Bridge on foot is not for the timid. Shoshone Falls does not always look like that, you hit it at peak flows, congratulations! . The entire Snake River can get diverted upstream at Milner Dam for irrigation which reduces Shoshone Falls to a trickle. The term Shoshone is often confused with Shoshoni, the term used to encompass the four Shoshone peoples, language, and culture.

Hmm, not the most sensitive presentation of the Japanese internment camp at Minidoka. I was interested to here about it, as I have visited Twin Falls dozens of times over the years - when I had family living there. I was not aware of the Minidoka National Historic Site and I'll make a point to visit there. As someone that grew up on the West Coast (especially those of us that grew up in Washington State or California), we all knew friends and classmates that came from families that suffered from the U.S. internment of Americans of Japanese ancestry. These Americans had their property, possessions and business ripped away by official government action. Yes, they may have made the best of it while imprisoned at the camps, but that does not overshadow the horror and atrocity the historic site reminds us of.

I've heard and read that the Snake River is very heavily polluted. 😢
