To answer some of the questions you guys asked in the video, Lalon's religious identity wasn't necessarily debated. He didn't subscribe to any of the traditional religions of the Bengal region. He was a humanist and he used music to spread his philosophy of humanity and love. There were people who were kind of like his disciples and they used to spread his messages through music all over the region. These people aren't as common these days as they were some 5 or so decades ago. They were quite popular, especially in the rural regions of Bengal. These singers would detach themselves completely from the mundane life and travel from village to village and sing . Lalon Shah and his music are an integral part and fundamental block of Bengali identity and culture, so even in these divisive times they are well received by even staunchly conservative people. Also this particular song is about 200 years old.

Actually Bengali culture is full of mystic poets and philosopher preaching humanist values over time. Even though they weren’t well accepted back then but now it a part of our culture. For your understanding, that’s what makes us different from Pakistan.

The life of Lalon was really a sad story which eventually made him write this kind of songs. He was born in a house of one religion and then he got measles so his family left him in front of a river because at that time there was no vaccine or cure for measles. Then a woman from another religion saved him and took care of him. After recovering when he came back to his mother, when his mother heard he has lived in a home of another religion, she refused to let him enter his own home. That made Lalon so heart broken that he left the materialistic world and started living in jungles. Later like minded people joined him and they used to make this kind of poetry which says a lot about caste and creed. Still in Bangladesh Lalon songs are practiced and admired by people and it is a different genre of music.

Being a musician myself, I always wait for your didactic anysis/reaction. This song is pure trance inducing and I too thought that tiny bass drop at murshidsbadis solo was just so cleverly designed . This song is about human nature and religion. Its basically a call for unity irregardless of religion or creed.

Mala (necklace) - when beads are wore as necklace. Referred to Sanatan (Hindu/Indian spiritual philosophy). Tasbeeh - when beads are being hold in hand. Referred to Islam (Arabian spiritual philosophy). Fakir Lalon Shah is the greatest Bangali spiritual/social philosopher of all time. Fakir (saint) and Shah (nobleman) are his titles given by the Bangali people. He's also called "guru" (mentor/teacher). Some other great Bangali philosophers such as Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam were inspired by Lalon. Lalon was born in a Hindu family and raised by a Muslim family after his family abandoned him over some religious superstition.

The massage is the most important part of this song. Lalon is a "ism" The artists believe in the massage, so this song become so beautifully peaceful . they 2 are not commercial artist. The fusion of lalon music and kabira das is great. Lalon is asking (In Kaniz) what is religion? What does it looks like? In reply the other (Kabira Das) reply," the source of water is same but we put it in various kind of pot and label it in difference name. " (In mur-she-da-ba-de) It's a nice dialogue. Wow. In today's world it's so relevant but it's a very old massage of old bangla now Bangladesh. These saints teaches us tolerance. Accept the others. In Another song in VOBER PAGOL" Do not tell mad. Look at your inside you are a mad too.The world can't run without mad. Madness is everywhere." The same vibe is spreader. Great Job Arnob and his team. Respect Coke studio bangla to warp the song with great music

This song is basically a criticism of religious fanaticism. Lanon Shah was a poet who lived in British era Bengal. The song is conveying that people are too curious about his religion, they want to know if he's "one of us or one them". He says none us is born with a religion, and we don't really know what religion is true, so what's the point of asking. I suspect Lalon being a philosopher, he didn't really believe in a specific religion.

Everyone ask Lalon (17th Century poet and philosopher of Bangla region); which caste or religion do you belong to? He ask them back - "how does a caste look? I was born without a caste". Kabir Das (14th Century poet of Uttar Pradesh) the other poet wrote water in different pot is still nothing but water. Key message is universal humanity without any form of man made discrimination.

The relationship between Hindus and Muslims is a complex one, but suffice to say on many occasions its been acrimonious. Those who tried to bridge the divide often would speak at the positives of humanity and not let identity politics interfer with that. Sufi Saints (some where Hindu) preached the mantra of humanity which is why people still sing their songs and visit their graves. Even members of the BJP will visit grave of Sufi Saints and go through a ritual. The idea of a soup kitchen was pioneered by a Sufi Saint.

You guys should read the story of the man 'lalon'. How he was about to die and realized eventually that we all are actually humans in different jar like- looks, colors and religion. There was a debate among the surrounding people of him which region he belongs. For that reason he lost his loved ones. He is a Bengali Baul saint, mystic, poet and social reformer.

Dear Lalol once rejected to back to his family because of he took food from a women who was belongs to the another religion and it is forbidden for the religion which Lalon belongs to but the woman save his life. So when Lalon's mother and wife and also the whole society rejected him to come back then Lalon gave up his family and being a disciple of a 'Baul' named Siraj Shai and took following his path and being a humanist. The path is called 'Baulism'. In this philosophy there is no room for any specific religion or cast system. They only believe in humanity.
