In the 1970s, the original Frontier Airlines utilized Twin Otters to carry passengers to some of the smaller cities in its routes near the Canadian border. At the completion of a pilot training session at KPUB one day, one pilot got off of the airplane and went to the terminal. Three others remained aboard and took the airplane back out to experiment with its STOL capabilities. They attempted a full-flaps takeoff. Witnesses said that the airplane went almost straight up, stalled, and came straight down, striking the runway nose first. The three pilots died.

It is due to this quality that these planes are used in Nepal. Some runways are shorter than 600 meters. All the more reason to use them at STOL airports, no?

@@williamreyes27125khz no dropped leading edge on that plane.. the ailerons DO come down with flap selection giving the effect of full span flaps

Would have been a lot shorter if flaps were used...

It appears that flaps _were_ used if you look closely.

Typical light aircraft, including the Twin Otter, usually use about 10 degrees of flap for take-off and something like 25 to 40 degrees for landing. For take-off you want the added lift and lower flying speed of moderate flap, but not the high drag of large amounts of flap which will impede acceleration to take-off speed. For landing you want the high lift (low approach speed) and high drag (to facilitate aerodynamic braking) of larger amounts of flap. If you have a soft field surface (e.g. soft wet ground) you might use larger amounts of flap for take-off than normal as the drag from surface friction may be more significant than the aerodynamic drag - enabling you to get clear of the ground at a lower speed but with not as good a climb performance until speed picks up and you start reducing the flap somewhat.

@@aarontheaviationaddict3643 a looked like a 10 degree flap.. which is for "normal" take offs... 20 is for short field.. and 30 if a "holly f.. k this is short" take offs
