I'm not sure if I like the idea of identity shifts in David Lynch's work on Twin Peaks in particular. I feel like that makes more sense to do in a movie then a TV show with the point of a TV show being to follow these characters over a longer period of time. Honestly I'm not sure if I consider anything in Twin Peaks to even be an identity shift. I think it's pretty clear that the two biggest instances in season 3 are more along the lines of characters not remembering who they really are rather than them being completely different personalities. Not even the Richard and Linda thing. The Giant only tells Cooper to remember the names Richard and Linda. When Cooper wakes up in the motel room he is fully aware that he is special agent Dale Cooper. There's no shift in personality at all. Unless we're seeing it from the other end. It could be that Cooper didn't become Richard but Richard became Cooper. Either that or Cooper is inhabiting a man named Richard similar to how Bob inhabited Leland. Maybe it's a marriage of the two ideas. And with Carrie Page it seems more like a Dougie situation than an identity shift. She clearly still has repressed memories of Laura Palmer. In that way it's almost more similar to the old troop of amnesia in soap operas which honestly kind of puts a smile on my face. If any of this is representative of an identity shift it's surprising to me that David Lynch would portray it in this way. It would be a more clear explanation of how an identity shift works then we've ever gotten before.

I think partly, in the last line particularly, this sensation may be due to the collaboration of Lynch and Frost as much as the medium being worked in.

Cooper's identity fluctuates in episode 18 from scene to scene. His name stays the same, and he doesn't know what to make of the names Richard and Linda. Diane has a new character, after she was released from her prison in Naido. I guess, tulpa Diane portrayed the traumatized side of the original Diane, who we never saw. The Diane waiting outside of the Black Lodge confirms it is really her. Their sexual experience is in stark contrast to the one of Janey-E and Dougie. She becomes Linda and leaves Cooper forever. The rest of the episode Cooper feels like a lonely, somewhat bitter man, who has lost everything in his line of duty, and whose enthusiasm to right a wrong, he didn't even cause, has gone away. Shortly before he asks about the year, he seems to look for the exit through the curtains of the Lodge. This ending also seems to be two-sided, like the two episodes. On one side, it all ends in negative emotions, darkness, and in the Red Room again, like a circle has been completed from death to death. On the other side, this ending leaves the viewer with so many questions, and an interest to pick up the threads again, and write a Carrie Page/Dale Cooper story. Somewhere along the plot, they encounter Linda again, who reverts back into Diane. And, contradicting what I've written earlier in another comment section, the town of Twin Peaks looks bleak and sort of dead in episode 18, but that doesn't mean that the next day can't look differently.
