TWIN STICK SHIFTING! First Drive Saturn OVERDRIVE in my JEEP CJ5

As a follow-up to a previous video showing the installation of a Saturn Overdrive in my vintage '65 Jeep CJ5, here is a video of it in ACTION!

The OVERDRIVE takes your 1:1 ratio to 1:1:25, lowering your RPMS at highway speeds by 25% as well as turning your 3-speed transmission into a 6-speed by splitting every gear, including reverse! My honest opinion is that this overdrive was worth every penny; it truly made this Jeep much more fun to drive, and don't those two shifters just look cool?! The Jeep is a 1965 CJ5 Tuxedo Park with a floor shift T90 3-speed trans, Dana 18 single-stick t-case, and 4.27 gears in the axles; all riding on factory wheels and 30x9.50-15 BF Goodrich Mud Terrain KM3 tires. Enjoy the shifting, I know I am! Please note I do not normal drive like this, splitting every gear to get up to speed. It was done merely to show how it works and what the overdrive does.

He did not show underdrive, only standard and overdrive. Your transmission gears are standard, your transfer case offers standard or underdrive, a Warn / Saturn OD runs standard or overdrive. With underdrive (Lo), standard, and overdrive available for each of the transmission gears the OD equipped 3 speed becomes 9 forward, three reverse and a four speed so equipped has 12 forward, 3 reverse. The 'LO' range (underdrive), however, should only be used in 4WD.

Great comparison, thank you for showing the speedo and the sound rate difference between standard and overdrive. So T-90 = 3-Speeds forward... T-90 + Saturn Overdrive = 6-Speeds forward... but now T-90 + Saturn Overdrive + Hi/Low Transfer = 12-Speeds forward... What's not to love about that? ~_^ and we didn't even include the 3-Speeds reverse.

Nine speeds forward, not twelve (unless you have a four speed trans.). The 'Hi-Lo' transfer case offers standard or underdrive ranges for each transmission gear, the Warn / Saturn OD runs standard or overdrive for each. With a three speed, that's 1 Lo, 1 Std, 1 OD then 2 Lo, 2 Std, 2 OD, followed by 3 Lo, 3 Std, 3 OD for a total of nine forward and three reverse (R Lo, R Std, R OD).

@@-oiiio-3993 With the transfer case in Lo range there are 3 forward speeds while the overdrive is in direct, and 3 more ratios with the overdrive engaged. That's 6 speeds forward and 2 reverse. Of course you are correct that there are also 6 forward speeds with the transfer case in Hi. That totals 12 forward speeds, and 4 reverse. I think calculus might be required to calculate the total number of possible lever positions that will yield a neutral.

I have a Warn overdrive in my '60 Kaiser Willys wagon. I don't shift through all the gears with it, but either leave it engaged or disengaged. Lots of fun watching you go through the gears though. Nice CJ.

It's even more fun with the older Spicer 18 T- case. With gearshift, twin stick t- case, and OD lever (mine is topped with a pineapple practice grenade), that's four shift levers. People ask "what are all of those for?", to which I answer "anti - theft". A three speed with 'Hi - Lo' transfer and Warn / Saturn overdrive has nine forward speeds (three reverse), not six, though the low range (underdrive) should only be used in 4WD. My present 'driver' is a flatfender with hopped up 225 Odd Fire, four speed and Warn Overdrive for twelve forward speeds, three reverse.

I've never seen someone use an overdrive in each gear. My dad only used his in the last gear.... ie changing a 3 speed into a 3 plus or 4 speed. You're using it as effectively a 6 speed. Don't know why that surprises me but truly is a paradigm shift. Mind blown. Lol

First time I have seen that too. Wonder how well it work behind a T18. I had a 68 triumph spitfire with electronic overdrive, worked in 3rd and 4th. It does give you options. Supposedly you could wire it up in all gears, never did.

At 00:37 he shifts to 4WD high (standard range). At 01:03 he shifts to OD, then from 4WD to 2WD 'on the fly', leaving the twin sticks of the transfer case in 2WD 'High', which is standard range for pavement driving. At 01:15 the OD is again engaged, now the 3 speed Jeep is in its highest gear range for highway cruising. In the city starting out in 1st over does it make the first creeper gear more like a close ratio box? (1st over/2 direct/3 direct/4 direct / 4 over) assuming Lo hole -2/3/4.

Running through the whole set may seem excessive, but the Jeep really appreciates those additional ranges and 3OD gives longer 'highway legs'. Off roading is where the OD really shines with a three speed offering nine forward ranges and three reverse (12 forward with a 4 speed) to provide the ideal range for most situations. It's even more fun with the older twin stick transfer case + gearshift + OD for a total of four levers with which to dance while clutching and braking. _Ahhhh, Jeeps!_

Thank you! Before, I rarely took it above 45 mph and i felt like the motor was revving high. Now, as you can see, I almost hit 60 mph and the motor didn't sound like it was screaming!

I have a warn overdive in my 71 with a muncie, 225 dauntless v6, last time I checked I was cruising I-5 to Lodi. My roommate was following me his factory Governor kicked in at 85, and I pulled away and left him in the dust. Also I never shift that much at all. I use my 4 speed then on freeway I shift into overdrive. No sense in making it complicated. Not to mention the last thing you want it to compromise the synchro on the overdrive "TRUST ME"

@@draehnpipe67 On the upside now you have the most desirable CJ in the world. The odd fire v-6 is hands down the best power train I have experienced. Overall it's got better gas mileage than the 350 v-8 that most people trade out. If it doesn't have hedders get some. Has better sound and more tork. While I'm talking tork. The dauntless is a freak of nature. When I was younger in highschool I could easily do wheelies in the schools parking lot... I don't recommend it that's how I cracked the frame twice..... 😲 You are going to love the shit outta the rig. Right now mine is in pieces I'm 4 linking it for the summer. Let's just hope us and our fellow countrymen don't loose our liberty and the Constitution because without that they will make it next to impossible to go enjoy the bad ass trails throughout the country.... No, that is his transfer case lever, As you watch the vid, he shifts the newly installed long lever to the right of his transmission gearshift for OD. Clutch and push forward for OD, clutch and pull back for standard.

The overdrive unit has its own lever, Forward engages overdrive for a 25% gear reduction, back is standard gearing. Add the underdrive range (4Lo) and a three speed offers nine forward gears, three reverse. The earlier transfer cases had two levers (in/out, Hi/Lo). My Warn OD equipped four speed Willys has four shift levers (transmission, 2 for T-case, OD) and offers twelve forward ranges, three reverse.

I thougt It was 5,38:1 because 4,27:1 axle ratio is longer and Jeep gets higher speeds like 55 mph or 60 mph without so effort. So, in case of 4,27:1 you don't need a overdrive. But this issue is relative because, for example, brazilian Jeeps CJ5 are 6 cylinders (Willys 161' - 2638 cm3 and not the Willys 134' - 2199 cm3) and they gets almost 75 mph. But without effort only until 50 mph. Its axle ratio is 4,89:1

Just as the '4LO' range of your t-case splits a three speed to six, adding the OD offers a total of nine forward gears, three reverse for a 3 speed, twelve forward and three reverse with a 4 speed. One can shift to the 'just right' range for most situations quickly.

After a while, you get a comfortable idea of exactly how you want to use it. Split-shifting every gear is more of a novelty, and can be a bit bothersome. Not only are the gears numerically closely spaced, but shifting both levers gets old around town. I generally use mine as simply a usable overdrive for 3rd gear, (as an effective 4th gear.) I have one in a cj5 v6, as well as a cj2a, 4cyl, and use them the same, despite the 4cyl having less power. I think it’s a great addition, and love the benefits, but being able to split-shift every gear isn’t necessarily one of them.

@@CymbalsOnly On highway I use it just as you described, only I have a four speed in my hopped up V6 'flattie' so I also use it as a range between 3 and 4 on twisting one and two lane mountain roads here in the Sierra Nevada. When I played a lot in sand, mud, and rocks in Northern AZ with an otherwise stock CJ2A with OD I used it in all gears to have the near perfect ratio for all situations. It got to where I knew just which shift it wanted at any particular moment while getting into / out of things.

He is shifting it in and out. Clutch and push lever forward for OD, clutch and pull back for standard just like the 'Hi - Lo' lever of a twin stick T-case does for low range (underdrive). With the OD and a 'Hi - Lo' transfer case, a three speed offers nine forward gears, three reverse as each transmission gear can be used in low (underdrive) standard (straight through gearbox) or Hi (overdrive) ranges.

It is used like one. With the OD, however, each gear can be 'split' to run through planetary gears for a 25% reduction at the transfer case output rather than simply choosing between two rear end gears. The effect at the wheels is essentially the same.
