Thank you so, so much for this. Last year my dad passed away and I just found an external hard drive that I was able to open with this. All of his favourite music was on there that we always listened to when driving on the highway. You explained everything so well🙏🏼

@@TwinBytesInc I do have a "dumb" question if you have time to respond. After my backup finished, I opened it on my external hard drive. When I inspected the copy it made of one of my hard drives (D:), it suddenly created a new drive on my PC (I:) that is the copy of (D:). I saw that this occurred in your video as well, but I don't understand why this new drive is created or why it remains as a new drive on my PC even when I unplug my external backup drive. The file size appears identical to the original drive, but where is it being stored?
@TwinBytesInc
@TwinBytesInc 4 жыл бұрын
@@HooksHollands That's actually a great question. It is "Mounting" a drive letter to view the backup. Even though you disconnected the External drive, the drive mapping may remain until you unMount it. It shouldn't be usable if the external drive is disconnected, but that drive can be unmounted by just right clicking on it and selecting "UnMount drive".
@HooksHollands
@HooksHollands 4 жыл бұрын
@@TwinBytesInc Thank you for taking the time to explain this. It did remain after the external drive was disconnected, but I "unmounted" the drive, it disappeared. Many thanks! :)

This is the best tutorial on how to use Macrium Reflect to create a clone backup of one's entire computer or laptop that I have come across. I have watched SO Many tutorials concerning this topic and found this is the only video that truly explained everything when it comes to creating a clone backup. I love that you explained all the options. All the other videos I watched told me where to click but did not tell me why. I didn't feel like I knew what I was doing. With this tutorial I feel like I now know what I am doing, and I was able to create my clone backup successfully. I will definitely be saving this video for future reference. I am so glad I finally found this video. Thank you for taking the time to make it and share your knowledge. This video really answered a lot of my questions. Thumbs up!

Very good job on the tutorial man I don't mean to criticize but the difference of a clone and an image would be that a clone is the entire space of a drive used and not and an image backup is only a copy of used drive space. If you were going to work on a hard drive that had deleted files on it that you were trying to recover and were to want a backup to work with you would have to clone the drive to capture the unused space because the image would only give you space that was taken and therefore deleted files may not show up for the recovery program to find. But honestly man very good video I was going to show it to my parents because they're not very tech savvy and they could really use this kudos buddy :)
@TwinBytesInc
@TwinBytesInc 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the well written comment and feedback. You are correct in the difference between Images and Clones. Images are great for almost every case, even to a new computer. But for the purpose of data recoveries or forensics investigations you would you need to have a clone to include the unused space. Thanks for pointing this out.

@@TwinBytesInc you're very welcome, I really do enjoy this channel and find all the stuff very interesting, I only learned of cloning software as a kid I tampered with XP and others a bit and wanted ways to be able to back up my stuff more than just the files the whole os, I have a lot of things that I'm not as good with like trying to remote to other computers or virtual and general networking between like my virtualbox setting up shares and things like that I'm a bit newer too and learning. But on my strong points that I'm familiar with such as disc cloning etc I try help where I can. When I was learning as a kid there wasn't KZbin really but anymore I learned most of it from watching amazing KZbinrs like you. I don't know about everybody but I think it's fascinating content. (Non-related but I was thinking of it for some reason if you haven't tried it a very cool USB tool is called ventoy if you havent tried that) you can basically drag and drop any bootable ISO onto the removable disc and it becomes a bootable ISO with amenu no need to reflash I use it for Macrium iso as well as a bunch of others, although for single bootable iso cases i use balenaetcher or rufus

Nice! Thank you for sharing this info. The Macrium-created videos are difficult to follow and yours is very helpful. I got a little confused at 20:00 but at least I got the takeaway of do the bootable recovery on the ext drive before you do the first backup on that same ext drive. -Clarification on your full image comments, you said with a total computer/disk failure, the rebootable + the full image backup will allow you to restore all your data and programs settings... do you mean the apps themselves will be restored? Like Adobe Photoshop, etal, if they were on your system when you created the backup? -Also, is it possible to copy your full image backup from the external drive where you created it to a cloud backup like Onedrive? Or maybe Google if you have bought the capacity required? I'm thinking house-fire catastrophe here. 👍 ⭐x5

Hello and thanks for your comment/question. I'm glad you found it helpful. Yes, being an image means it will have not only all your data, but all your programs, apps, settings, personalization, etc. Also, Yes you can store the image in the cloud, if you have the storage for it.

I watched your video and executed my backup to a 2T WD My Book external drive step by step with your video. As I got to 18:27 on your video I was asked to format the selected drive (it showed up as FAT). I thought I should format to NTFS since that is the format of my backup drive. I then got a warning that the formatting process would erase "ALL data". All I want to do is browse the backup to see if it got everything. What should I do?
@TwinBytesInc
@TwinBytesInc 3 жыл бұрын
Viewing the backup as per those instructions in the video should not be asking to format a drive. You are simply mounting a drive to view the files through a new drive letter.

I tried to follow your video, I'm trying to create an image to transfer to another machine. When I use CLONE THIS DISK and it goes through the sequence, there isn't any image file created with the little Macrium logo. It did create a drive called HP_RECOVERY but the file folder RECOVERY is empty. I've tried it half a dozen times. What am I doing wrong? There is a drive created that says OS and it does contain all my Windows stuff.
@TwinBytesInc
@TwinBytesInc 3 жыл бұрын
Cloning and doing a backup image are two different things. The clone will clone the drive to another drive directly. The backup option takes a backup image and creates a Macrium Reflect file. I'm not sure what went wrong there but it's possible you went a little fast and clicked the wrong button?

One can browse the saved Image and copy/paste the files. You showed it. What about the programs? How can we transfer/restore only one problematic or deleted program and use it? Installations had already been made and all programs placed in ProgramFiles. How to move them? Is the only way to restore the full Image?
@TwinBytesInc
@TwinBytesInc 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. With this software, the only way is to restore the entire image. You can install the programs through, and after the programs are freshly installed, you can copy and paste the program folder which will have all configuration files. That might be helpful.

My OS is installed on my SSD, but I think my SSD is dying. Would I be able to use Macrium to copy all the files from my SSD to my HDD, and then boot from my HDD?
@TwinBytesInc
@TwinBytesInc 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. Yes, you can either clone directly over, or create an image backup of your SSD and then restore that image onto the HDD. It will erase whatever is on the HDD and you will have an exact copy of the SSD. You wouldn't notice anything different except for the speed difference.

@@TwinBytesInc Thank you for replying! I have one more question if you could please answer. If I want to restore this image in a new empty drive (without any partitions) of the same size as the one the image was taken from, do I need to create all the partitions in the new drive as they are in the image or will Macrium Reflect (Free version) do the partitioning for me when it restores the image?

1. seriously...do NOT use "Windows Boot Menu" option!! doing that will ADD a MS-PE boot screen, when thereafter appearing when first booting. ughhh.... gotta figure how to change that now; 2. make sure your Programs actually work AFTER Restoring. My pro CAD software (ActCAD) did not start, instead a pop-up warned "Error 41". Grrr... had to ReInstall that CAD-software. All the others did, though. Grrr....

Thanks for your feedback. They are all options. Definitely you should test everything as I used to do annual disaster recovery tests for a large company I worked for many years ago to confirm we have the procedure down for what to do, how to do it and how long it takes and confirm it actually works. It's a huge undertaking for a large organization. For the most part, on a single computer, doing an image backup is guaranteed to have all programs and settings exactly how you had it, but ofcourse sometimes something could go wrong. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience.
